Theory suggests that a male in good condition at the end of the period of parental investment will outproduce a sister in similar condition, while she will outproduce him if both are in poor condition. Accordingly, natural selection should favor parental ability to adjust the sex ratio of offspring produced according to parental ability to invest. As maternal condition declines from good to poor, the fetal sex ratio should decline from a high proportion of males to a high proportion of females. Data from 1525 domestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in six different herds slaughtered during December and January in 1976 through 1979 do not support a relationship between the sex of the fetus and either the condition of the mother or her age.

Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of aquagenic pruritus (AP) in medical students in Lomé (Togo). Methods. This was a prospective and descriptive study conducted among medical students in Lomé from June 1st to August 30th, 2019. The data collection questionnaire was anonymous composed of sociodemographic variables, bathing habits, and history of allergy responding to the concept of aquagenic pruritus and its characteristics. Results. In our study, 129/591 medical students had AP, giving a prevalence of AP to 21.8%. The average age of students with AP was 23.9 years, and the M/F sex ratio was 1.5. AP was not present after each bath in 100% of the medical students who suffered from it and lasted an average of 9.09 minutes. It was characteristically pruritic (60.5%) or tingling (38.0%) and localized (45.0%) or generalized (55.0%) in respondents with history of AP. There was a significant association between the presence of AP and a personal history of allergic rhinitis (p<0.01) and the presence of AP and a family AP (p<0.01). Twenty-six (20.2%) respondents with AP feared taking a bath. Bathing with warm or lukewarm water (29.5%) or applying menthol ointment (27.1%) were the main precautions taken to reduce AP. Conclusion. Aquagenic pruritus is a common condition in medical students in Togo. It occurs mainly in males and can be familial.

IntroductionDelirium is a common clinical syndrome characterized by acute disruption of all cognitive and behavioural functions. Objectives– Draw up an epidemiological and clinical profile of patients hospitalised for delirium;– Assess different pathologies involved.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective and descriptive study, in the neurology department at Habib Bourguiba university hospital, Sfax, Tunisia, at the period from 2009 to 2013. We included 52 patients hospitalised for delirium. Socio-demographic and clinical data were collected from patient files.ResultsThe mean age was 66.5 years. The majority (73.1%) were elderly patients (> = 60 years). Sex-ratio (M/F) was 1.73. It was the first episode in 96.2%.Medical histories were cardiovascular in 55.8%, endocrinal in 25%, neurological in 11.5% and psychiatric in 13.5%. The beginning of the signs was brutal in 55.8% of cases. The reported symptoms were: disorientation in time and space (76.9%) and behaviour disturbance (63.5%), memory disorder (23.1%), headaches (26.9%) and hallucinations (17.3%). Organic etiologies were noted in 75% of cases: vascular 42.30%, metabolic 11.50%, infectious 11.5%, tumoral 3.9% and iatrogenic 3.8%. Delirium grafted on dementia was retained in 5.8% of cases.ConclusionDelirium is associated with increased mortality. Its prevention is essential and requires recognition of risk situations.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Context and Objective: Malaria is a well-known disease of the Malian population; as a result pharmacists are giving more and more advices regarding this disease to the population. In order to better understand the problem of the delivery of antimalarials without prescription, we initiated this study with the objective of studying the practice of dispensing antimalarials without prescription in accordance with the guidelines of Mali's national malaria program.Patient and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study on the delivery of antimalarials based on counseling. We included in the study all clients aged 15 years and over who were received in Bamako pharmacies for a non-prescription antimalarial medication for themselves or for another person based on mutual consentment. Results: The study was carried out in 199 of the 230 pharmacies in the district of Bamako; we recorded 466 requests for advice. The sex ratio M / F was 1.7 and 28.9% of clients for whom the drug was intended were under 20 years of age, in which case 52.4% of  the costumers were not the actual patients. Artemisinin-based combination therapy was the most recommended (52%). Sulfadoxine Pyrimethamine was the most widely purchased antimalarial among non-CTA antimalarials. In 34.5% of cases, antimalarials are associated with other therapeutic classes where analgesics / antipyretics constitute 77.6% of these classes followed by antibiotics (21%).Conclusion: The pharmacy is the first resort in the healthcare system for the majority of clients with clinical suspicion of malaria. Keywords: Advice, malaria, pharmacy, Bamako
