The aim of this research was to evaluate and compare the content of pigments and total sugars in raw materials of both the domestic as well as foreign origin that are used in the production of sweet ground pepper. The tests included two samples exported from abroad, specifically from Serbia and China and the following domestic varietes of Capsicum annum L.: Kolora, Žitava, Dvorská (varieties that form the base of the final product called Paprika Žitava/Žitavská paprika and a mix of a number of domestic varieties called Slovenský polotovar. The tests were conducted in 2015 and 2016. The highest content of pigments in both years was contained in Dvorská and Kolora – 6.81 and 6.11 g.kg⁻¹. The largest amount of total sugars was recorded within Žitava in 2015 (20.5%) and in 2016 Slovenský polotovar with 24.5%. Both the exported as well as domestic products fulfilled the parameters of quality required in the production of sweet pepper.

Изучены потребительские предпочтения молочных продуктов жителей Кемерово. Социологическое исследование проведено выборочным методом сбора информации – анкетированием взрослого населения Кемерово. Объем выборки 550 чел. Установлено, что молочные продукты употребляют ежедневно 80% респондентов, при этом 96% предпочитают отечественную продукцию. Наиболее значимыми критериями выбора для женщин являются полезность (98%), состав (78%), низкая калорийность (80%). Информированы о значимости обогащенных продуктов 83% респондентов, в основном женщины от 35 лет и старше. Необходимость обогащения молочных продуктов дефицитными компонентами осознают 57% опрошенных старше 36 лет. Приобретают и готовы употреблять молочные продукты с натуральными растительными компонентами 42%. Тыква присутствует в рационе 92% респондентов. Готовы употреблять творожный продукт с хорошими потребительскими характеристиками на основе тыквы 51%, затруднились с ответом 23%. В результате исследований составлен целевой портрет потребителя (женщина, 25–49 лет), определены критерии выбора продукта. Продукт на основе натурального сырья выбрали 78% опрошенных, продукту на основе местного растительного сырья отдали предпочтения 22% респондентов. Consumer preferences of the residents of Kemerovo regarding dairy products have been studied. The sociological research was conducted by a selective method of collecting information (questionnaires) of the adult population of Kemerovo. The sample size is 550 people. It is established that 80% of respondents use dairy products daily, while 96% prefer domestic products. The most important selection criteria for women are utility (98%), composition (78%), low calorie value (80%). 83% of respondents were informed about the importance of enriched products, mostly women aged 35 and over. 57% of respondents over 36 years old are aware of the need to enrich dairy products with scarce components. 42% are ready to eat dairy products with natural plant components. Pumpkin is present in the diet of 92% of respondents. 51% of respondents are ready to use a curd product with good consumer characteristics based on pumpkin, 23% of respondents found it difficult to answer. As a result of the research, a target portrait of the consumer (women from 25 to 49 years of age) was drawn up, and the criteria for selecting the product were determined. 78% of respondents chose a product based on natural raw materials and 22% of respondents gave preference to the product based on local plant material.

Pepper, a member of the Capsicum genus of the Solanaceae family, is an annual, cultivated plant that grows in temperate climates. The main analogs of capsinoids, which are the secondary metabolites of peppers, are capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin. During process, calyxes and peduncles are considered to be waste. Levels of capsinoids in these tissues in not well known. An optimized method was used to extract bioactive materials from the waste products from C. annum L. genotypes. Calyxes and peduncles were collected and dried in the shade. Extractions were in MeOH solutions and the extracts were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to quantify the total amount of capsinoid, capsaicin, and dihydrocapsaicin contents. Capsinoid, and its analogs, were identified in all genotypes at varying concentrations, and their capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin contents evidenced with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). In conclusion, the highest amount of capsinoids was found in chili Samandağ peppers, whereas the lowest amount of capsinoids was found in the red sweet pepper sample. All pepper genotypes, the capsaicin amount was higher comparison to dihydrocapsaicin. Capsanoids and anologues obtained from waste pepper can be used as raw materials in production of value added products.

A HPLC-UV method was developed and validated for determination of stemokerrine and oxystemokerrine in Stemona kerrii roots. The chromatographic separation was performed on a Hypersil BDS C18-column eluted with methanol: 50 mM ammonium acetate solution using a gradient system with a flow rate of 1 mL/min and detection at 300 nm. Stemokerrine and oxystemokerrine showed a linear relationship within the range of 0.5-100 μg/mL. The method was shown to be precise with a RSD <2%. The average percent recovery of stemokerrine was 101.6% and for oxystemokerrine 99.5%. Two samples of S. kerrii were analyzed and the average contents of stemokerrine and oxystemokerrine were 0.2 and 0.05%, w/w, respectively. The present work will provide a useful standardization method for S. kerrii raw materials for further pharmaceutical development.

The archaeology of two Iron Age sites, ‘Loughey’ in County Down, Northern Ireland, and Meare Lake Village, Somerset, is discussed. Changes in the archaeological interpretation of the sites are considered in the light of recent research into Iron Age sites in Britain and Ireland. Consideration of the chemical composition of the glass from ‘Loughey’ and Meare helps to add weight to the existence of suspected links between Ireland and the Continent in the first century B.C., and not, as has regularly been assumed, specific links with south England. The compositional characteristics of the glass from Meare are found to be totally different from those of the ‘Loughey’ glass and it is suggested that glass raw materials were imported to Ireland for the manufacture of Iron Age glass beads there. We can not now be as confident that the person buried at ‘Loughey’ was of ‘foreign’ origin.

Plastic material is used for a wide variety of commercial packaging due to being inexpensive, lightweight, and due to its resistance. In pharmaceutics, container-content compatibility studies are required for product authorization. Many guidelines and publications are available; however, the information is often only related to the raw materials used to produce packaging. During the manufacturing process, substances can be added to improve the product characteristics and performance, resulting in a processed material that is considerably different from the unprocessed material. In this study, the mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) specimens fabricated according to standard ISO 527 and specimens fabricated with the same materials, but obtained from final packaging, were evaluated. Furthermore, we examined the interaction between a semisolid formulation and LLDPE and LDPE as a final packaging, by subjecting two samples to accelerated degradation testing. Then, mechanical properties and volatile organic extractable were evaluated. Simulated solar radiation did not induce changes in the packaging mechanical properties and no extracts were detectable. The thermal shock strongly influenced the mechanical behavior, and interactions between packaging contents were identified. The present work underlines the difference between analyzing the standard ISO specimens versus samples obtained from final packaging in order to evaluate the packaging under real use conditions. An evaluation on the final packaging, instead on standard specimens, can provide information about the plastic material after the manufacturing process and the interaction between packaging and content.
