Nanomaterials and European Novel Food law: The uncertain path to reasonable regulation

The objective of the present article is to examine whether current regulations at the European level are capable of adequately controlling the risks associated with engineered nanomaterials of anthropogenic origin (ENM) in food products. In this context it is crucial to examine closely the Novel Food Regulation (EC) 258/977 and its attempted revision, which recently failed. The article also includes a consideration of the legislative procedure and a discussion of the legislative bodies’ different positions. In contrast, the regulatory controls of food contact materials such as food packaging or food additives would go beyond the scope of this article. Prior to the legal analysis some remarks are made about the state of the art regarding risk assessment and the application of ENM in the food sector.

Edible flowers are trend in the novel food sector since they may be inserted in natural, health and eco-innovation approach. However, there is little information in literature about consumers perception about them, mainly in western society. Thus, the objective of the present work is to evaluate Brazilians perception about roses, hibiscus, ipê and pansy as edible flowers. An online survey was applied using a free word association methodology and a check-all-that-apply for their application in gastronomy. Results from word association show that all flowers were highly associated to positive attitudes and feelings, appearance and application aspects. Environmental words were also highlighted within the responses. These features were significantly related to frequency of buying new foods and show up as important characteristics to be explored for enhance edible flowers popularity. For application of them within food formulations, rose and hibiscus were tracked to tea, jam, bread and cookies utilization, meanwhile pansy to salads. Ipê was not related to none of gastronomy applications. Results indicate that knowledge of tangible and intangible flowers features, such as functional, environmental and application aspects can change and enhance change consumers perception and willingness to try these non-conventional edible plants. Deeper studies about people perception and attitude towards edible flowers are necessary to evaluate the influence of eating and shopping habits, neophobic behavior and others on their consumption.

AbstractIn the past few decades, there have been remarkable advances in our knowledge of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and synthesizing methods. AuNPs have become increasingly important in biomedical and industrial applications. As a newly implemented method, AuNPs are being used in nanopackaging industries for their therapeutic and antibacterial characteristics as well as their inert and nontoxic nature. As with other NPs, AuNPs have privileges and disadvantages when utilized in the food sector, yet a significant body of research has shown that, due to the specific nontoxic characteristics, AuNPs could be used to address other NP flaws. In this mini review, we present synthesizing methods, food industry applications, and mechanisms of action of gold nanoparticles. Regarding the investigations, gold nanoparticles can play a major role to reduce microbial load in foodstuff and therefore can be implemented in food packaging as an effective approach.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemical compounds widely used in different industry fields including food contact materials (FCM), providing resistance to fat and humidity, and non-stick properties. PFAS enter into the food chain directly from the intake of contaminated food or indirectly from the migration of the FCM into the food. This exposure published in different research highlights a public health concern. Therefore, it is necessary to perform analysis of the content of different FCM and evaluate the migration from the FCM under normal conditions of use and storage. This bibliographical review proves that different perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds are detected in fast food packaging, microwave popcorn bags, and frying pans, among others. Furthermore, it shows the conditions or factors that favor the migration of the PFAS from the FCM into the food.

According to the Report presented in the ONU Program for Development there are eight dimensions of international security (collective security) and national security: economic-social security, food security, environmental security, community security, personal security, political security and individual security, to which demographic security and military security could be added. Although there have been concerns about the nutrition status of the population since ancient times, it was only in the middle of the last century that the scientific and institutional bases of contemporary food and nutrition policies were laid. Food and nutrition policies are represented by a series of objectives, priorities, norms and decisions adopted by the invested factors and institutions with the competences necessary to ensure to the entire population the economic and social conditions for a good state of individual and public health. Packaging has become one of the most important functions of a product, of a commodity on the market. The packaging is part of the Food Contact Materials (FCMs) group, which should not affect the health of consumers or alter the quality of the products. The breadth and complexity of the socio-economic context in the food contact sector requires finding additional ways to adapt. In this context, the textile sector, respectively the field of technical textiles, through the potential of functionalities, can make a special contribution to achieving a level of coherence between the field of functionalized materials intended for food packaging – environment – consumer health – free movement of products – efficient functioning of the internal market.
