This research presents a literature review of published scientific literature on the Coromandel Peninsula, a well-known region of the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand. It contains many biological, geological, and historical features and is well known for beautiful scenery, resulting from a volcanic rock-dominated terrestrial environment influenced by oceanic factors at the coast. All these factors have combined to make the Coromandel a popular tourism destination for New Zealanders and offshore visitors. In researching the current state of knowledge of the region, we searched three scientific databases to define the main ways of studying the region. The results demonstrated a high interest in biological and environmental factors, reflected in the type and scale of conservation measures applied to flora and fauna of the region. Additionally, specificity of geological evolution was a highly examined subject, in the context of hydrothermal alteration as related to gold and silver mineralization resulting in extensive exploration and mining. Meanwhile, indigenous cultural aspects of the land were not recognizable as expected within Western scientific literature, even though the region contains sites recognized as some of the earliest Māori habitations. Therefore, we suggest future studies to expand our understanding of scientific, cultural, and social aspects of the region as applied to the field of conservation in the region.

Since 2006, there has been a marked increase in the number of reports of severe and often fatal fungal skin infections in wild snakes in the eastern USA. The emerging condition, referred to as snake fungal disease (SFD), was initially documented in rattlesnakes, where the infections were believed to pose a risk to the viability of affected populations. The disease is caused by Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola , a fungus recently split from a complex of fungi long referred to as the Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii (CANV). Here we review the current state of knowledge about O. ophiodiicola and SFD. In addition, we provide original findings which demonstrate that O. ophiodiicola is widely distributed in eastern North America, has a broad host range, is the predominant cause of fungal skin infections in wild snakes and often causes mild infections in snakes emerging from hibernation. This new information, together with what is already available in the scientific literature, advances our knowledge of the cause, pathogenesis and ecology of SFD. However, additional research is necessary to elucidate the factors driving the emergence of this disease and develop strategies to mitigate its impacts. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Tackling emerging fungal threats to animal health, food security and ecosystem resilience’.

The purpose of the work is to analyze the scientific literature on the constitutional features of the occurrence and course of psoriasis. The analysis of modern scientific literature in the scientific databases PubMed, eLIBRARY.RU and Web of Science was carried out. A review of the literature indicates the current state of the problem of such a disease as psoriasis, which is not only a skin lesion but also a serious socio-psychological problem. Given its chronic nature, lack of etiopathogenetic treatment, and knowing the trigger factors in the right way, it would be a good idea to look for early predisposition for the disease and to form risk groups for such individuals. Ideal in terms of efficiency and cheapness, given the results of the above studies, could be anthropological studies. The study of the constitutional features of the occurrence and course of psoriasis for the population of Ukraine is thus a priority and topical area of research.

In view of the rapid development of computer technologies and the introduction of information tools into the everyday and working life of the individual, we see the process of virtualization not only of culture, but also of sociocultural activity. The paper discusses the virtualization of sociocultural activity in modern conditions. The purpose of the study is to identify trends in the virtualization of sociocultural activity. The object is sociocultural activity. The subject is the current state of virtualization of sociocultural activity. Research objectives are: to indicate the relevance of the topic; to study scientific literature on the issue of negative trends in virtualization of sociocultural activity; to determine the essence of the terms "virtualization" and "virtual reality", "culture virtualization", "virtualization of sociocultural activity"; to list the most relevant virtual activity technologies; and to identify negative trends in virtualization of sociocultural activity. This process, according to the author, is a consequence of global informatization, including the sociocultural sphere. According to the author, the current state of virtualization of sociocultural activity has both positive and negative aspects. As positive aspects, the author includes the possibility of using unlimited space for creativity and self-realization, as well as the development of a wide range of training programs provided - master classes, marathons, courses, etc.; maintaining interpersonal communication using modern instant messengers and applications and simplifying communication of work processes. The work also cites the negative aspects of the process of virtualization of sociocultural activity, such as hedonism, depersonalization and standardization of the person, excessive freedom of action. In conclusion, the author notes that the importance of negative trends is increasing and the process of virtualization of sociocultural activity can be controlled, namely, the translation of high-quality censorship content, limiting destructive actions, and blocking violators.

In the context of Translation Studies, this paper presents a proposal for classifying culturally marked translation units from a functional dynamic perspective that is considered to be more useful for both translation practice and translation-related research than other taxonomies so far suggested by the majority of theorists. For this purpose, first I provide an overview of the current state of the art in research on these specific translation units with regard to their designation, concept and classification. Second, I conduct a critical analysis of the heterogeneity of designations and definitions as well as of the static taxonomies so far prevailing in scientific literature in this respect. Third, I select a designation for these sorts of units and justify the decision made. Fourth, I provide a detailed description of the concept and its nature. Finally, I design a classificatory model that is not based on a mere classification of culture-related areas and topics but takes into account all the intratextual and extratextual factors involved in the translation process. The proposal put forward is guided by two main parameters: the degree of lingüistic and cultural (in)equivalence between the source system and the target system and the level of knowledge the reader is supposed to possess about the culturally marked textual units.

The rapid development of CRISPR-based gene editing has been accompanied by a polarized governance debate about the status of CRISPR-edited crops as genetically modified organisms. This article argues that the polarization around the governance of gene editing partly reflects a failure of public engagement with the current state of research in genomics and postgenomics. CRISPR-based gene-editing technology has become embedded in a narrow narrative about the ease and precision of the technique that presents the gene as a stable object under technological control. By tracing the considerably destabilized scientific understanding of the gene in genomics and postgenomics, this article highlights that this publicly mediated ontology strategically avoids positioning the “ease of CRISPR-based editing” in the wider context of the “complexity of the gene.” While this strategic narrowness of CRISPR narratives aims to create public support for gene-editing technologies, we argue that it stands in the way of socially desirable anticipatory governance and open public dialogue about societal promises and the unintended consequences of gene editing. In addressing the polarization surrounding CRISPR-based editing technology, the article emphasizes the need for engagement with the complex state of postgenomic science that avoids strategic simplifications of the scientific literature in promoting or opposing the commercial use of the gene-editing technology.

This article reviews scientific research on narrative journalism, aiming to (1) demystify the nature of narrative journalism by specifying its core characteristics, resulting in a sustainable definition of the genre; (2) characterize the current state of the scientific field; and (3) identify gaps in our knowledge about narrative journalism. A systematic search of the scientific literature between 1998 and 2017 resulted in a set of 103 journal articles about narrative journalism. Their analysis reveals that the scientific field is dominated by essayistic and qualitative studies on printed forms of narrative journalism, with a focus on the history and style of narrative journalism, whereas systematic research on the function and impact of the genre is scarce. A framework is presented that synthesizes the hitherto isolated strands of research on narrative journalism and offers anchors for an empirical turn in narrative journalism studies.
