Test-weight and weathering of spring wheat

Wet weather often delays harvest and results in a grade reduction of wheat because of a decrease in test-weight, an important grading factor in Canada. The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of delayed harvest on test-weight loss of 14 Canadian wheat cultivars representing three different classes, and to develop a screening strategy for retention of test-weight for breeding programs. Non-weathered test-weight (NWTWt), weathered test-weight (WTWt), and test-weight loss (TWtLoss; i.e. NWTWt – WTWt) in the field, averaged over five field locations and 2 yr were similar within the CPS, CWAD and CWRS wheat classes, although there were genotypic differences for all three variables. Because test-weight requirements for the top grades are higher in the CWAD class than in other classes, durum cultivars would be more susceptible to downgrading during wet harvests. Historical data from the Durum Wheat Co-operative Test also suggests that, since 1950, the mean test-weight of the genetic lines has decreased by 3.7 kg hL−1, and is now close to the minimum for grade #1 in the CWAD class. Most of the decrease in test-weight observed over several weeks in the field could be simulated by a single 5 – 10 min soaking of non-weathered seed in the laboratory. Linear regression analyses of both field and laboratory samples indicated that 90% of the genotypic variation in weathered test-weight could be attributed to differences in the NWTWt. These results suggest that the screening strategy for retaining test-weight should focus on selection for increased NWTWt. This is much simpler than screening for high WTWt or low TWtLoss, which requires soaking of the seed or field weathering. Key words: Triticum aestivum, Triticum turgidum, quality

The goal of this study was to evaluate and compare the semen characteristics, and testosterone concentration for three breeds raised under hot, desert conditions in Saudi Arabia. A total of 150 rams (Najdi, Naemi, and Harri) were used, aged 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months (ten rams from each breed in each age group). Body weight and testicular parameters were measured. In addition, testosterone concentration (TC), ejaculate volume (EV), sperm concentration (SC), total sperm output per ejaculate (TSO), live sperm percentage (LSP), sperm progressive motility (SPM) and sperm mass motility (SMM). The results show that TC and EV differed significantly (P less than 0.01) between breeds. At 36 months, semen characteristics (TSO, SMM and SPM) differed significantly among breeds. Naemi rams were superior to Najdi and Harri in terms of the mean live sperm percentage (LSP) for all age groups. These results may assist in ram selection for breeding programs based on high reproductive performance.

Five cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were evaluated for effects of weathering by subjecting windrowed grain to varying periods of exposure in a 2-yr study. Moderate amounts of precipitation caused a significant reduction (5%) in test weight affecting density and packing efficiency about equally. Cultivars differed in test weight loss with Neepawa showing the largest reduction of 2.9 and 4.2 kg hL−1 in successive years. Cultivars also differed in susceptibility to bleaching, the primary cause of grade loss. The 1000-kernel weights decreased significantly (1.4%) in only 1 yr. Grain hardness decreased approximately 8% with delayed harvest at similar rates for all cultivars. The hard-grained Glenlea and RL4137 were the most resistant to test weight loss and bleaching, indicating that selection for improvement might be possible.Key words: Harvest delay, weathering, wheat, test weight, seed size, grain hardness

Selection for rapid leaf area growth has the potential to increase wheat biomass, and both water-use efficiency and weed competitiveness early in the season. Several morphological components contribute to increased seedling leaf area, including rapid seedling emergence and production of longer, wider leaves. Early emergence of a large coleoptile tiller has also been demonstrated to increase plant leaf area and biomass in wheat and other grass seedlings. Yet little is known of the extent and nature of genotypic variation for coleoptile tiller growth in wheat. A random set of 35 wheat, barley, and triticale genotypes was evaluated in glasshouse and outdoor studies for seedling characteristics, including coleoptile tiller growth and total plant leaf area. Coleoptile tillers were produced more reliably for seedlings grown outdoors and when supplied with additional soil nitrogen. Genotypic differences in coleoptile tiller frequency and leaf area were large, ranging from 0 to 78% and from 0.0 to 1.4 cm2, respectively at very early growth stages. Australian commercial wheats tended to produce fewer coleoptile tillers of smaller size than overseas germplasm where the coleoptile tiller accounted for up to 12% of total seedling leaf area. This compared favourably with mainstem tiller leaf area, which ranged from 0 to 3.5 cm2 and accounted for up to 16% of plant leaf area. Broad-sense heritabilities were high for coleoptile tiller presence and size in favourable conditions (c. 75%) but low (c. 40%) for seedlings evaluated across nitrogen content-varying soils. Generation means analysis was used to investigate genetic control for coleoptile tiller growth across multiple populations. Significant (P < 0.05) differences were observed among generations for coleoptile tiller frequency and growth (numbers of leaves, leaf area, and biomass). These differences reflected strong additive genetic control with little evidence for any gene action × year interaction. Increases in coleoptile tiller frequency and mass were correlated with larger embryo size and wider seedling leaves to increase seedling leaf area (rg = 0.89). Comparisons between reciprocal F1 and F2 generation means indicated strong maternal effects for coleoptile tiller growth in some but not all crosses. Screening in favourable environments will increase heritability and aid in selection for progenies producing large coleoptile tillers. Evidence for additive genetic control should permit early generation selection but not without some progeny-testing for coleoptile tiller growth together with other early vigour components associated with increased plant leaf area.

Program pemuliaan ikan mas varietas Punten dilakukan dengan seleksi individu terhadap karakter bobot ikan. Pembentukan populasi dasar untuk kegiatan seleksi dilakukan dengan memijahkan secara massal induk ikan mas yang terdiri atas 20 induk betina dan 21 induk jantan yang dikoleksi dari daerah Punten, Kepanjen (delapan betina dan enam jantan), Kediri (tujuh betina dan 12 jantan), Sragen (27 betina dan 10 jantan), dan Blitar (15 betina dan 11 jantan). Larva umur 10 hari dipelihara selama empat bulan. Selanjutnya dilakukan penjarangan sebesar 50% dan benih dipelihara selama 14 bulan untuk dilakukan seleksi dengan panduan hasil sampling 250 ekor individu setiap populasi. Seleksi terhadap calon induk dilakukan saat umur 18 bulan pada populasi jantan dan betina secara terpisah dengan memilih berdasarkan 10% bobot ikan yang terbaik. Calon induk yang terseleksi kemudian dipelihara hingga matang gonad, kemudian dipilih sebanyak 150 pasang dan dipijahkan secara massal. Didapatkan respons positif dari hasil seleksi berdasarkan bobot ikan, yaitu 49,89 g atau 3,66% (populasi ikan jantan) dan 168,47 g atau 11,43% (populasi ikan betina). Nilai heritabilitas untuk bobot ikan adalah 0,238 (jantan) dan 0,505 (betina).Punten carp breeding programs were carried out by individual selection for body weight trait. The base population for selection activities were conducted by mass breeding of parent consisted of 20 female and 21 male collected from area Punten, eight female and six male (Kepanjen), seven female and 12 male (Kediri), 27 female and 10 male (Sragen), 15 female and 11 male (Blitar). Larvae 10 days old reared for four moths. Then after spacing out 50% of total harvest, the offspring reared for 14 months for selection activity based on the sampling of 250 individual each population. Selection of broodstock candidates performed since 18 months age on male and female populations separately by selecting based on 10% of fish with best body weight. Candidates selected broodstocks were then maintained until mature. In oder to produce the next generation 150 pairs were sets and held for mass spawning. The results revealed that selection response were positive, 49.89 g (3.66%) for male and 168.47 (11.43%) for female. Heritability for body weight is 0.238 (male) and 0.505 (female).

Abstract Background Careful scheduling of elective surgery Operating Rooms (ORs) is crucial for their efficient use, to avoid low/over utilization and staff overtime. Accurate estimation of procedures duration is essential to improve ORs scheduling. Therefore analysis of historical data about surgical times is fundamental to ORs management. We analyzed the effect, in a real setting, of an ORs scheduling model based on estimated optimum surgical time in improving ORs efficiency and decreasing the risk of overtime. Methods We studied all the 2014-2019 elective surgery sessions (3,758 sessions, 12,449 interventions) of a district general hospital in Siena's Province, Italy. The hospital had3 ORs open 5 days/week 08:00-14:00. Surgery specialties were general surgery, orthopedics, gynecology and urology. Based on a pilot study conducted in 2016, which estimated a 5 times greater risk of having an OR overtime for sessions with a surgical time (incision-suture)&gt;200 minutes, from 2017 all the ORs were scheduled using a maximum surgical time of 200 minutes calculated summing the mean surgical times for intervention and surgeon (obtained from 2014-2016 data). We carried out multivariate logistic regression to calculate the probability of ORs overtime (of 15 and 30 minutes) for the periods 2014-2016 and 2017-2019adjusting for raw ORs utilization. Results The 2017-2019 risk of an OR overtime of 15 minutes decreased by 25% compared to the 2014-2016 period (OR = 0.75, 95%CI=0.618-0.902, p = 0.003); the risk of a OR overtime of 30 minutes decreased by 33% (OR = 0.67, 95%CI= 0.543-0.831, p &lt; 0.001). Mean raw OR utilization increase from 62% to 66% (p &lt; 0.001). Mean number of interventions per surgery sessions increased from 3.1 to 3.5 (p &lt; 0.001). Conclusions This study has shown that an analysis of historical data and an estimate of the optimal surgical time per surgical session could be helpful to avoid both a low and excessive use of the ORs and therefore to increase the efficiency of the ORs. Key messages An accurate analysis of surgical procedures duration is crucial to optimize operating room utilization. A data-based approach can improve OR management efficiency without extra resources.

Abstract Plants acquire multiple resources from the environment and may need to adjust and/or balance their respective resource-use efficiencies to maximize grow and survival, in a locally adaptive manner. In this study, tissue and whole-plant carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) and C/N ratios provided long-term measures of use efficiencies for water (WUE) and nitrogen (NUE), and a nitrogen isotopic composition (δ15N) based mass balance model was used to estimate traits related to N uptake and assimilation in heart-leaved willow (Salix eriocephala Michx.). In an initial common garden experiment consisting of 34 populations, we found population level variation in δ13C, C/N and δ15N, indicating different patterns in WUE, NUE and N uptake and assimilation. Although there was no relationship between foliar δ13C and C/N ratios among populations, there was a significant negative correlation between these measures across all individuals, implying a genetic and/or plastic trade-off between WUE and NUE not associated with local adaptation. To eliminate any environmental effect, we grew a subset of 21 genotypes hydroponically with nitrate as the sole N-source, and detected significant variation in δ13C, δ15N and C/N ratios. Variation in δ15N was mainly due to genotypic differences in the nitrate efflux/influx ratio (E/I) at the root. Both experiments suggested clinal variation in δ15N (and thus N uptake efficiency) with latitude of origin, which may relate to water availability and could contribute to global patterns in ecosystem δ15N. There was a tendency for genotypes with higher WUE to come from more water replete sites with shorter and cooler growing seasons. We found that δ13C, C/N, and E/I were not inter-correlated, suggesting that selection of growth, WUE, NUE and N uptake efficiency can occur without trade-off.

Background Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is the most frequently performed bariatric procedure in the world. Our purpose was to evaluate the percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL), resolution of obesity-related comorbidities after SG, and identify predictive factors of weight loss failure. Methods A prospective cohort study of adults who underwent SG during 2014 in 7 Belgian-French centers. Their demographic, preoperative, and postoperative data were prospectively collected and analyzed statistically. Results Overall, 529 patients underwent SG, with a mean preoperative weight and body mass index (BMI) of 118.9 ± 19.9 kg and 42.9 ± 5.5 kg/m2, respectively. Body mass index significantly decreased to 32.2 kg/m2 at 5 years ( P < .001). The mean %EWL was 63.6% at 5 years. A significant reduction in dyslipidemia (28.0%-18.2%), obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) (34.6%-25.1%), and arterial hypertension (HTN) (30.4%-21.5%) was observed after 5 years, but not for diabetes and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). At multivariate analysis, age >50 years old, BMI >50 kg/m2, and previous laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) remained independent predictors of weight loss failure. Conclusions Five years after SG, weight loss was satisfactory; the reduction of comorbidities was significant for dyslipidemia, OSAS, and HTN, but not diabetes and GERD. Age >50 years old, BMI >50 kg/m2, and previous LAGB were independent predictors of weight loss failure.

SUMMARYA total of 245 test cross progenies obtained by crossing cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines and restorer (RHA) lines were evaluated in replicated trials in 1995 and 1997. Experiments were carried out in two locations (Osimo, East Central Italy and Budrio, Northern Italy) in 1995, whereas in 1997 trials were conducted only in Osimo. General combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of the parents was evaluated to identify genotypes suitable to be used as testers for breeding programs and to verify the performance of hybrids. The results obtained in 1995 were used to make test crosses in 1996 to be evaluated in 1997. The GCA and SCA of RHA and CMS lines were nearly always significant for all the studied traits when lines were randomly taken in 1995. When selected testers were used on the basis of the results of the first year, the SCA of new RHA lines and GCA of new CMS lines were not significant for achene yield, but they were for the other traits.The best GCA estimates for RHA were often higher than those of CMS, indicating that selection for RHA could be more useful than for CMS. As expected, GCA was always lower than SCA. CMS and RHA, with high variance among their test crosses for yield and many other traits, could be used as testers. The lack of a tester with high variance in all traits requires more than one tester in evaluating lines. The GCA of a line can change in function of the germplasm with which it is combined.

The juvenile period represents a serious impediment in olive breeding programs. Seedlings with long juvenile period are of very low interest for the breeder because their evaluation considerably delays the first stages of the breeding process. For this reason, the influence of seedling vigour (measured as plant height or stem diameter) on the characteristics at the adult stage was studied to establish useful negative preselection criteria on the basis of that relationship. Olive progenies from crosses and open pollinations of 12 different parents carried out in 1998 and 1999 were evaluated in the greenhouse and, afterwards, during the first 3 years of bearing in the open field. The results obtained indicate that early evaluation and selection for juvenile period can be performed at the seedling stage in olive progenies on the basis of vigour measurements. Selection for short juvenile period was valid irrespective of parentage and, therefore, could be efficient in a general context. No relationship between juvenile period and yield or fruit traits was found so that this preselection criterion would have no adverse effects on these characters.

The present study is a transversal analysis of the interest in genomic selection for plant and animal species. It focuses on the arguments that may convince breeders to switch to genomic selection. The arguments are classified into three different “bricks.” The first brick considers the addition of genotyping to improve the accuracy of the prediction of breeding values. The second consists of saving costs and/or shortening the breeding cycle by replacing all or a portion of the phenotyping effort with genotyping. The third concerns population management to improve the choice of parents to either optimize crossbreeding or maintain genetic diversity. We analyse the relevance of these different bricks for a wide range of animal and plant species and sought to explain the differences between species according to their biological specificities and the organization of breeding programs.
