THE EFFECTS OF SEX AND AGE OF MALE AT CASTRATION ON GROWTH AND CARCASS QUALITY OF YORKSHIRE SWINE

The effects of sex and age of castration of males on growth rate, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics in bacon type swine were measured using 16 pigs each as gilts, entire boars, and boars castrated at birth, 6, 12, 16, and 20 weeks of age. Castration at 20 weeks was too late since some pigs reached 200 pounds live weight before that age. Boars consumed less feed daily than barrows and gilts, were thinner in loin fat, and yielded a higher percentage of shoulder than gilts. The carcasses of boars and gilts were longer, had less fat covering over the shoulder and back, a larger area of loin, and a higher iodine number than those castrated late. Acceptability tests showed that sex or age of castration did not affect the flavour, odour, or tenderness of the meat.Purebred breeders can delay castration for better selection of boars without any serious effect on growth, physical carcass characteristics, and feed requirements. Although the market discriminates against boars, it appears questionable whether castration is necessary when boars are slaughtered at 200 pounds before they reach the age of 150 days.

In 1965 performance testing was initiated in Finland for the selection of boars for A.I. use. In 1965—68 a total of 147 boars were tested on four local testing stations. The following average results were recorded: backfat thickness 21.6 mm (at a live weight of 88 kg), growth rate 699 g/day, feed efficiency 2.69 scand. fu/kg growth and testing score (growth + fat) 99.6. The average testing score for boards selected for A.I. use (43 % of tested) was 99.7. Weakness of the legs was noted in 21 % of the boars. The varying initial weights of the male piglets influenced the growth rate very markedly (P < 0.001), and the effect of the initial age was significant with respect to feed efficiency (P < 0.01). The influence of the weight and age at end of test was highly significant with regard to thickness of fat (P < 0.001). Moreover, the weight at end of test affected the testing score significantly (P < 0.001), but the effect of age was eliminated by use of correction factors. The years as well as the testing stations influenced most of the results in a significant manner. The thickness of fat for the Yorkshire boars was significantly greater (P < 0.01) than for the Landrace boars and the former also had a significantly lower testing score. The effect of the genetic variation, influence of sires within breeds, was highly significant (P < 0.001) for all test results. It has thus proved possible to estimate the genetic quality of the boars. The different influences on the test results were analyzed by least squares procedures.

The effects on average daily gain of a 12 mg. implant of diethylstilboestrol has been tested in male suckling lambs and in male hoggets. In both types stilboestrol produced some mammary stimulation. One case of rectal prolapse was encountered in the hoggets. In suckling lambs, treatment did not significantly increase rate of gain nor significantly affect any of several carcass characteristics studied. In hoggets, treatment produced a highly significant increase in rate of gain (33%), a highly significant increase in pelt weight and a highly significant decrease in the percentage of fat in the last rib section. It produced a non-significant increase in muscle and bone in the last rib section. Carcass score and dressing percentage were not significantly affected by treatment.The oral administration of L-thyroxine to suckling female lambs from 30–70 lb. live-weight did not significantly affect the rate of gain or the carcass characteristics studied.

ABSTRACTCarcass characteristics of 246 bulls and steers by Dairy Shorthorn (DS), Red Friesian (RF), Red Holstein (RH), Danish Red (DR), Meuse-Rhine-Yssel (MR), Simmental (SM) and North Devon (BB) bulls were recorded as part of a breed improvement programme. Carcasses of animals on grass-feeding systems were older, had lower fat and conformation scores and higher estimated lean yield than on intensive cereal systems, BB were fatter, and MR and SM leaner, than the remaining breed groups which were similar to DS and SM progeny had high conformation scores. Estimated lean in the live weight (g/kg) relative to DS was RF +5, RH −3, DR +5, MR +16, SM +16 and BB +6 with an average standard error of 3.

SUMMARYTwo experiments were carried out to compare the performance and carcass quality of pigs given diets based on barley, wheat or maize meal, and another two experiments comparing these cereals, flaked maize and sorghum. In general, differences in the utilization of feed for live-weight gain could be related to differences in the digestible energy content of the cereals used in the diet, although in some experiments pigs behaved atypically on individual diets. Flaked maize was consistently inferior to the other cereals in the efficiency of conversion of its digestible energy, possibly because of its poorer amino acid balance and its low levels of lysine and tryptophan in relation to energy. Differences between experiments in the performance of pigs fed on the various diets are also discussed. Differences between treatments in killing-out percentage and predicted lean percentage were small, and carcasses of pigs from all treatments were acceptable for bacon curing.

The response to dietary lysine of liquid or crystalline form was examined in pigs fed on cereal protein dietsover the range of live weight from 25.0 to 95.0 kg. Forty individually fed growing pigs (20 gilts and 20castrated males) were allocated to four isonitrogenous diets consisting of barley, undehydrated distillers solids and a mixture of minerals and vitamins with lysine supplementation of 0.9 or 3.2 g pure lysine per kg DM in liquid or crystalline form to provide 7.1 or 9.1 g/FU total lysine, respectively. Two trials involving a total of 120 Yorkshire SPF swine were conducted to evaluate the effect on live performance and carcass characteristics of replacing supplemental protein from 44% soybean meal (SM) with that from raw ground soybeans (RGS). Levels of 10.80, 16.45 and 22.15% RGS in the grower diets caused slower growth rates and reduced feed efficiency compared with those of pigs that did not receive RGS in their diets (P < 0.05). Although the results were not as consistent as in the grower phase, levels of 11.25 and 15.15% RGS in the finisher diets caused slower growth rate. Pelleting of a diet containing 3.65% RGS resulted in improved feed efficiency compared with that of the same diet unpelleted, when fed in the grower phase (P < 0.05). The area of the loin eye muscle tended to become smaller as the level of RGS in the diet increased. Treatment had no consistent effect on the other measures of carcass quality studied.

SUMMARYThe effects of three diets on the performance and carcass quality of lambs of the Makui and Moghani breeds of sheep were studied. Thirty-two Makui and 33 Moghani lambs, 6 to 7 mo of age, were kept on feedlots and given three diets for 77 days. The diets each contained a barley, alfalfa meal and corn silage base plus different levels of urea, molasses and dried beet pulp.The average daily live-weight gains (ADG) of lambs fed on diets I (no urea), II (0·8% urea) and III (1·4% urea) were 218, 208 and 204 g respectively, while feed conversion ratios (FCR) were 6·3, 6·6 and 6·8 respectively. The overall ADG for Makui and Moghani lambs were 213·6 and 206·6 g respectively and the FCR were 6·4 and 6·9 respectively. None of these differences was statistically significant. The mean dressing percentages of lambs fed on diets I, II and III were 52·5, 52·7 and 53·9 respectively, and those of Makui (53·1) and Moghani lambs (53·3) were similar. There were only minor differences between the carcass characteristics of the two breeds and these were not influenced by the different diets.

SUMMARY1. Two experiments were conducted, one with pigs fed individually on a restricted scale of feeding, and one with pigs fed ad libitum in groups, to test Probioticum as a feed additive with and without nitrovin and zinc bacitracin.2. Growth rate, feed conversion, killing-out percentage and carcass quality were measured.3. No significant difference was shown in any of the characteristics measured between diets containing any of the additives, singly or in combination.

1. The relationship between the level of feeding herringmeal and its effect on growth rate, feed efficiency and bacon quality has been examined in nine experiments, each consisting of three groups of seven (in one series six pigs). All experiments concerned herringmeal with about 7% petrol ether extracted fat, fed in combination with ground cereal grains and concentrates (Table 2).2. Seven levels of feeding were tried. In the live weight period 20–30 kg they amounted to 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12%, herringmeal respectively. Later the percentages were successively reduced as follows: in the period 30–50 kg live weight 3/4, in the period 50–65 kg 1/2 and in the period 65–80 1/4 of the original amounts. No herringmeal was fed from 80 to 90 kg when the pigs were slaughtered (Table 1).3. Increased levels of herringmeal produced increased growth rate and also brought about an increased feed efficiency. Most of the response was obtained with moderate levels, i.e. additions starting with 6–8%. Higher levels exerted more total effect, but these further accelerations progressively lessened. For initial additions of 6% herringmeal the growth rate improved on an average estimated at 8% and the feed efficiency by 5% compared with the performances of the pigs on an all-vegetable control diet, whereas corresponding figures for initial additions of 12% were about 13 and 7, respectively. Lower levels proved of little benefit (Tables 3 and 4 and Figs. 1 and 2). Growth-promoting effect of levels of 6% or more proved significant.

The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of feeding system on the growth rate and carcass quality of crossbred Improved Jezersko-Solčava x Texel (JSRT) lambs and to evaluate the effect of sex on these traits. The trial was conducted in nature according to the traditional rearing systems. The trial included 44 crossbred lambs, which were born and reared until the slaughter in three different flocks. In the age of 10 days suckled lambs were offered with ad libitum corresponding diets according to the feeding system. All lambs were slaughtered in seven consecutive days by the same procedure. The effect of feeding system significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter, EUROP carcass conformation and shoulder width. Likewise, the effect of sex significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter and internal fatness of carcasses. According to carcass cuts the feeding system significantly affected only the proportion of neck and leg. Considering meat quality traits, feeding system had a significant effect on the pH 45 and CIE a* values. In this study, we could speculate that more than the feeding system the growth and the carcass traits as well as meat traits were affected by the amount of the supplement.
