Utilization of Bagasse Ash in Concrete and Curing it by Treated Hospital Wastewater

This study examined the potential use of sugarcane bagasse ash as a partial cement replacement material and treated domestic wastewater was made for the mixing and curing of concrete. The bagasse ash was collected from the Malaprabha sugar industry, Belagavi, and the treated wastewater was collected from Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC, Belagavi. The work involved the design of M20 grade concrete with w/c ratio of 0.40 and also chemical admixture was made used. The study evaluated the slump, compressive strength, and split tensile strength of concrete with different cement replacement ratios. An equal number of cubes and cylinders were casted and were cured in both tap water and treated wastewater separately for a curing period of 28 days and 56 days. The compressive and tensile strength results were obtained after 28 days of curing period for cubes and cylinders. Results show that replacement of cement with bagasse ash and curing them under treated wastewater obtained good results, which supports waste minimization and utilization. The blended concrete compressive strength results also indicate that the easing of sulphate attack will be drastically reduced when cured under treated wastewater.

Industrial wastes generally pumped into water bodies and soil that would pollute the atmosphere. As a control measure, industrial wastes products utilized as waste building materials. In the present research, waste products from various industries like illuminate sludge and glass bottle powder used in different dosages as a replacement for fine aggregate and metakaolin used as a cement replacement. Split tensile strength and compressive strength of the concrete samples examined for M30 grade. Fine aggregate is substituted by glass bottle powder (i.e. 10 to 40%) and illuminate sludge (i.e. 10 to 30%). Metakaolin substituted for cement replacement (i.e. 4 to 12%). Glass bottle does not pollute the atmosphere, but the disposal of waste glass results wastage of land. Thereby glass bottle powder can be utilized as a cement replacement in the construction industry. Then the metakaolin and illuminate sludge are the waste products from the titanium product. The experiment performed to assess the strength properties by incorporating various industrial wastes in different dosages. Physical tests of all three products have carried out according to the code requirements. Three specimens have been tested for each industrial waste products ratio to examine the tensile and compressive strength of concrete at 7th day, 14th day and 28th day and eventually to cure to achieve the optimum strength of concrete. Addition of these industrial wastes into the concrete showed an outstanding improvement in modulus of rupture, split tensile strength and compressive strength at an early and later ages.

This paper adopts an experimental approach on the use of rice husk ash as a partial replacement of cement in the production of concrete and the consequent effects on density, compressive strength and split tensile strength of the formulated product. Rice husk ash is used as replacement of cement in different dosages of 0%, 2.5%,5%, 7.5%, 10%, 12.5%, and 15%. Results showed that 10% replacement of cement with rice husk ash is optimum. At 10% replacement of cement with RHA, the density is increased by 5.02%, the compressive strength by 22.22% and the split tensile strength by 20.45% in comparison with control aerated concrete.

PurposeThe influence of using magnetic water instead of tap water in the mechanical properties of the concrete exposed to elevated temperatures was investigated. Two concrete mixes were used and cast with the same ingredients. Tap water was used in the first mix and magnetic water was used in the second mix. A total of 48 specimens were cast and divided as follows: 16 cylinders for the concrete compressive strength test (8 samples for each mix), 16 cylinders for the splitting tensile strength (8 specimens for each mix) and 16 beams to test the influences of magnetized water on the flexural strength of concrete (8 specimens for each mixture). Specimens were exposed to temperatures of (25 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C and 600 °C). The experimental results showed that magnetic water highly affected the mechanical properties of concrete. Specimens cast and curried out with magnetic water show higher compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength compared to normal water specimens at all temperatures. The relative strength range between the two types of water used was 110–123% for compressive strength and 110–133% for splitting strength. For the center point loading test, the relative flexural strength range was 118–140%. The use of magnetic water in mixing concrete contribute to a more complete hydration process.Design/methodology/approachExperimental study was carried out on two concrete mixes to investigate the effect of magnetic water. Mix#1 used normal water as the mixing water, and Mix#2 used magnetic water instead of normal water. After 28 days, all the samples were taken out of the tank and left to dry for seven days, then they were divided into different groups. Each group was exposed to a different temperature where it was placed in a large oven for two hours. Three different tests were carried out on the samples, these tests were concrete compressive strength, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength.FindingsExposure of concrete to high temperatures had a significant influence on concrete mechanical properties. Specimens prepared using magnetic water showed higher compressive strength at all temperature levels. The use of magnetic water in casting and curing concrete can increase the compressive strength by 23%. Specimens prepared using magnetic water show higher splitting tensile strength at all temperatures up to 33%. The use of magnetic water in casting and curing can strengthen and increase concrete resistance to high temperatures, a significant enhancement in flexural strength at all temperatures was found with a value up to 40%.Originality/valuePrevious research proved the advantages of using magnetic water for improving the mechanical properties of concrete under normal conditions. The potential of using magnetic water in the concrete industry in the future requires conducting extensive research to study the behavior of magnetized concrete under severe conditions to which concrete structures may be subjected to. These days, there are attempts to obtain stronger concrete with high resistance to harsh environmental conditions without adding new costly ingredients to its main mixture. No research has been carried out to investigate the effect of magnetic water on the mechanical properties of concrete exposed to elevated temperature. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of using magnetic water on the mechanical properties of hardened concrete subjected to elevated temperature.

The properties of concrete containing coarse recycled aggregates were investigated. Laboratory trials were conducted to investigate the possibility of using recycled aggregates from the demolition wastes available locally as the replacement of natural coarse aggregates in concrete. A series of tests were carried out to determine the density, compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of concrete with and without recycled aggregates. The water cement ratio was kept constant for all the mixes. The coarse aggregate in concrete was replaced with 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% recycled coarse aggregates. The test results indicated that the replacement of natural coarse aggregates by recycled aggregates up to 40% had little effect on the compressive strength, but higher levels of replacement reduced the compressive strength. A replacement level of 100% causes a reduction of 28% in compressive strength, 36% in split tensile strength and 50% in flexural strength. For strength characteristics, the results showed a gradual decrease in compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity as the percentage of recycled aggregate used in the specimens increased. 100% replacement of natural coarse aggregate by recycled aggregate resulted in 43% savings in the cost of coarse aggregates and 9% savings in the cost of concrete.


Waterway sand and pit sand are the most normally utilized fine aggregates for concrete creation in many parts of the world. Huge scale extraction of these materials presents genuine ecological risk in numerous parts of the nation. Aside from the ecological danger, there still exists the issue of intense lack in many regions. In this way, substitute material in place of river sand for concrete production should be considered. The paper means to examine the compressive and split tensile qualities of concrete produced using quarry residue, sand, and a blend of sand and quarry dust. The experimentation is absolutely research facility based. A total of 60 concrete cubes of size 150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm, and 60 cylinders 150 mm in diameter and 300 mm deep, conforming to M50 grade were casted. All the samples were cured and tested with a steady water/concrete proportion of 0.31. Out of the 60 blocks cast, 20 each were made out of natural river sand, quarry dust and an equivalent blend of sand and quarry dust. It was discovered that the compressive strength and split tensile strength of concrete produced using the blend of quarry residue and sand was higher than the compressive qualities of concrete produced using 100% sand and 100% quarry dust.

Abstract The rigid pavement is a pavement construction in which a concrete slab is used as the top layer, which is located above the foundation or directly above the subgrade, without or with an asphalt surface layer. One type of rigid pavement used in Indonesia is rigid pavement without using reinforcement which is usually used in areas with low traffic or residential areas. Pavement without using reinforcement is the small split tensile strength so that the part of the plate will experience cracks due to stresses that cannot be avoided from traffic loads. Therefore, it is necessary to have reinforcement on the concrete slab so that the cracks do not extend. In this research, the use of copper fiber waste from electronic cables as a substitute solution for reinforcement to be used as a mixture in concrete. The experiments were carried out using fiber with variations of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% of the total weight of concrete mixture material and then tested at 28 days of concrete age. This research showed the variation of fiber weight until 1,5% increase the split tensile strength up to 32,46% and the compressive strength up to 9,16%.

Environmental degradation caused by deforestation activities for harvesting of limestone from the hills and its calcination process at cement factory along with disposal of cockle shell waste from fisheries industries is in need of resolution. In view of sustainable green environment, approach of utilizing cockle shell waste as partial cement replacement in cement production would reduce pollution caused by both industries. Thus, this research investigates the effect of cockle shell powder as partial cement replacement on setting time and compressive strength of mortar. A total of five types of mortar mixes consisting different percentage of cockle shell powder as partial cement replacement from 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% by weight of cement were prepared. Setting time test were conducted on fresh paste. All specimens were subjected to water curing until the testing age. Compressive strength test were conducted on hardened mortar cubes at 3, 7 and 28 days. Finding shows that integration of cockle shell powder as partial cement replacement influences the setting time and compressive strength of mortar. Suitable combination of 10% cockle shell powder successfully enhances the compressive strength of mortar. Conclusively, success in transforming the cockle shell waste to be used as partial cement replacement in mortar production able to reduce cement consumption, save landfill usage for trash dumping and promote cleaner environment for healthier lifestyle of community nearby.

Concrete made from ordinary Portland cement is one of the most widely used construction materials due to its excellent compressive strength. However, concrete lacks ductility resulting in low tensile strength and flexural strength, and poor resistance to crack formation. Studies have demonstrated that the addition of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet can effectively enhance the compressive and flexural properties of ordinary Portland cement paste, confirming GO nanosheet as an excellent candidate for using as nano-reinforcement in cement-based composites. To date, the majority of studies have focused on cement pastes and mortars. Only limited investigations into concretes incorporating GO nanosheets have been reported. This paper presents an experimental investigation on the slump and physical properties of concrete reinforced with GO nanosheets at additions from 0.00% to 0.08% by weight of cement and a water–cement ratio of 0.5. The study demonstrates that the addition of GO nanosheets improves the compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tensile strength of concrete, whereas the slump of concrete decreases with increasing GO nanosheet content. The results also demonstrate that 0.03% by weight of cement is the optimum value of GO nanosheet dosage for improving the split tensile strength of concrete.
