Propiedades tribológicas de recubrimientos de carbono depositados por haz de electrones

En este trabajo se produjeron películas de Carbono (C) sobre sustratos de acero D01 y acero D03. Las mismas fueron depositadas utilizando la técnica por haz de electrones empleando argón (Ar) como gas precursor y fueron caracterizadas a través de sus propiedades mecánicas y tribológicas. Se realizaron pruebas de: dureza, rugosidad y desgaste usando una punta piramidal tipo Berkovich para evaluar la dureza y una máquina tribológica de configuración pin sobre disco (pin-on-disc) para medir el desgaste. Se obtuvo la dureza de los recubrimientos, la cual varío respecto al sustrato utilizado, lo que originó un cambio en el coeficiente de fricción y desgaste. Un aumento considerable en la dureza permitió la disminución del coeficiente de fricción.

The tribological properties of Lithium grease specimens with different concentrations of Al2O3 nanoparticles were investigated using a pin on disc apparatus under different sliding speeds and normal loads. Results showed that Al2O3 nanoparticles enhanced the tribological properties of lithium grease and reduced the COF and wear scar width by approximately 57.9% and 47.5% respectively.

This work evaluates the dry sliding behavior of anodic aluminum oxides (AAO) formed during one traditional hard anodizing treatment (HA) and two golden hard anodizing treatments (named G and GP, respectively) on a EN AW-6060 aluminum alloy. Three different thicknesses of AAO layers were selected: 25, 50, and 100 μm. Prior to wear tests, microstructure and mechanical properties were determined by scanning electron microscopy (VPSEM/EDS), X-ray diffractometry, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT-FTIR) spectroscopy, roughness, microhardness, and scratch tests. Wear tests were carried out by a pin-on-disc tribometer using a steel disc as the counterpart material. The friction coefficient was provided by the equipment. Anodized pins were weighed before and after tests to assess the wear rate. Worn surfaces were analyzed by VPSEM/EDS and DRITF-FTIR. Based on the results, the GP-treated surfaces with a thickness of 50 μm exhibit the lowest friction coefficients and wear rates. In any case, a tribofilm is observed on the wear tracks. During sliding, its detachment leads to delamination of the underlying anodic aluminum oxides and to abrasion of the aluminum substrate. Finally, the best tribological performance of G- and GP-treated surfaces may be related to the existence of a thin Ag-rich film at the coating/aluminum substrate interfaces.

In this work, the wear loss of basalt fiber reinforced polypropylene/polylactic acid polymer composite was analyzed using pin-on-disc under dry sliding conditions. The polypropylene, polylactic acid, and basalt fiber (chopped fiber) are melted and mixed homogeneously using a twin-screw extruder, which is followed by an injection molding technique for specimen preparation. The specimens are named as PPB1 (polypropylene, 50%; polylactic acid, 35%; basalt fiber, 15%), PPB2 (polypropylene, 55%; polylactic acid, 30%; basalt fiber, 15%), and PPB3 (polypropylene, 60%; polylactic acid, 25%; basalt fiber, 15%) based on their weight fraction. The wear rate and coefficient of friction are measured for each sample subjected to three different loads and sliding velocities. It is observed from the wear mapping that the wear loss of sample PPB3 is relatively less when compared with the other samples. The scanning electron microscope images of the worn-out region of the sample reveal the fracture and dislocation of fibers in the matrix. The sample PPB3 shows low wear loss. It is due to the better cohesion between the fiber and the matrixes when compared with the other samples.

The analyzed topic refers to the wear resistance and friction coefficient changes resulting from heat treatment (HT) of a hot-dip zinc coating deposited on steel. The aim of research was to evaluate the coating behavior during dry friction after HT as a result of microstructure changes and increase the coating hardness. The HT parameters should be determined by taking into consideration, on the one hand, coating wear resistance and, on the other hand, its anticorrosion properties. A hot-dip zinc coating was deposited in industrial conditions (according EN ISO 10684) on disc-shaped samples and the chosen bolts. The achieved results were assessed on the basis of tribological tests (T11 pin-on-disc tester, Schatz®Analyse device, Sindelfingen, Germany), microscopic observations (with the use of optical and scanning microscopy), EDS (point and linear) analysis, and microhardness measurements. It is proved that properly applied HT of a hot-dip zinc coating results in changes in the coating’s microstructure, hardness, friction coefficient, and wear resistance.

Determining the root causes of various noise, vibration and harshness phenomena in modern automotive drivetrains is a critical task for industry, since noise, vibration and harshness issues often result in worsened driving experience. The aim of the current research is to investigate the dynamics during dry clutch engagement and the associated – often problematic – oscillations. This paper reports the development and partial validation of numerical models to study dry clutch behaviour. The models are used to investigate the influence of clutch and throttle actuation on the occurrence of unwanted clutch oscillations. The dynamic coefficient of friction between the clutch interacting surfaces was measured using a pin-on-disc rig under different slip speeds and contact pressure conditions, which are representative of a typical clutch engagement manoeuvre. The paper highlights the occurrence of instability issues in clutch dynamics (disc radial mode) as potential generators of aggressive noise, vibration and harshness, particularly during two different clutch pedal actuations. Such analysis has not hitherto been reported in the open literature.

A particulate composite with a magnesium matrix (Mg3Al) and glassy carbon particles (GCp) obtained under industrial conditions from a gravity cast and pressure die cast suspension was examined. The influence of the casting procedure on the microstructure and mechanical properties was revealed. Sliding friction tests by the pin-on-disc method for different loads (2.3, 5, and 9.3 N) and speeds (0.06, 0.09, and 0.14 m/s) were performed. Regardless of the technology, the sliding friction coefficient’s value strongly depended on the load and speed. Its value was changing (0.35–0.13) and was usually higher for the pressure die cast material, yet the wear resistance of the composite processed in that way was considerably better compared with the gravity cast. The results of the worn surface observation by SEM with EDS showed an influence of the initial Mg3Al-GCp composite’s microstructure on the processes of its wear.

Now a days for machining operations apart from good tribological properties, the lubricant is also expected to be non-hazardous and non-polluting. When considering the ecological and environmental aspects in machining processes, the use of biodegradable oil can be an alternative source of lubricant due to its positive impact to employee health and environmental pollution. In this regard, our research work uses vegetable based cutting fluids developed from canola and sunflower oil, in an attempt to provide an eco-friendly environment. Experiments are carried out on a pin-on-disc tribometer with tungsten carbide (WC) pin against AISI 4340 steel disc for different sliding times under different environments, thus simulating the machining environment. The tribological properties, wear and friction of vegetable based oils were comparatively investigated with a commercially available mineral oil. Wear tracks and roughness profiles of test specimens were compared by using optical microscope and profilometer respectively. Results indicated that vegetable based canola oil demonstrated excellent tribological properties compared to that of commercial mineral oil.

An attempt is made to modify the surface metallurgically and enhance the wear resistance of AISI 316LN austenitic stainless steel using friction stir processing. Friction stir welding tools made up of tungsten based alloy with pin and pinless configuration was used. Fine equiaxed grains were observed in the friction stir processed zone irrespective of tool configuration used. Dry sliding wear resistance was evaluated using pin-on-disc wear tester and it is found that, the friction stir processed zone showed superior wear resistance compared to the base metal. Microstructure, micro hardness, and worn surfaces were used to correlate the results obtained.
