The aim: To determine the structure of acute injuries of temporary and permanent frontal teeth in children, to analyze the applied diagnostic and treatment measures for acute tooth trauma and to investigate their effectiveness. Materials and methods: The subject of the study were 31 children aged 2-12 years with acute temporary and permanent tooth trauma. Methods: clinical (radiological, thermodiagnosis), medical and statistical. Results: The number of injured permanent teeth was greater than the number of injured temporary teeth. The pattern of temporary and permanent tooth injuries differed, so in temporary teeth dislocations were observed, and in permanent teeth fractures prevailed over dislocations. In our opinion, this is due to the peculiarities of the anatomy of the temporary teeth. Usually, the therapeutic tactics of acute temporary teeth injuries is to remove them, despite their important role in the growth and development of jaws, physiological formation and eruption of permanent teeth. The therapeutic tactics of dynamic observation in the case of intrusive dislocation of the temporary tooth were selected in the clinic of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. In some cases, with a slight change in the position of the temporary tooth, self-regulation of its position was observed, in other cases the tooth remained dystopic, but its viability remained in 50% of cases. Therapeutic tactics of acute injuries of permanent teeth were selected according to the type of trauma. In the case of permanent tooth dislocation, with a slight change in its position, tooth immobilization was carried out by splinting with fiberglass tape and photopolymer composite material. Conclusions: Our observations have shown that the complex of modern specialized medical care for the affected children with acute traumatic injuries of the teeth should be guided by their preservation, which ensures the subsequent normal formation of the dental-jaw apparatus. To ensure these conditions, a long, reliable immobilization of the damaged tooth is required as soon as possible after injury.

Purpose: Leeway space is clinically crucial in pediatric dentistry because it is utilized to resolve tooth crowding and allow the first molars to drift mesially to establish a Class I molar relationship in the later stages of mixed dentition. This study investigated leeway space in the mixed dentition of Taiwanese children of different sexes and ages. Materials and Methods: The digital panoramic dental films of 182 lower arches of 119 boys and 63 girls aged 5–10 years were analyzed in this retrospective study. The mesiodistal crown widths of the primary canines and first and second molars and the permanent canines and first and second premolars were measured using medical imaging software. Differences in leeway space were statistically analyzed. Results: The average leeway space was 1.29 ± 1.48 mm on each side of the lower arch. The leeway space of children aged 5–6 years was significantly greater than that of children aged 7–8 years. No gender difference in crown width was discovered, except with regard to the primary first molar. Although no gender difference in leeway space was observed, permanent teeth affected leeway space more for girls than for boys. Conclusion: In Taiwanese children, although leeway space does not differ by sex, age affects leeway space. However, permanent tooth size has an influence on the leeway space of girls.

Since January 2019, insurance coverage for caries treatment of permanent teeth using composite resin in children aged 12 and under has started in South Korea. The purpose of this study was to compare the pattern of permanent molar composite resin restoration aged 12 and under before and after the insurance coverage from January 2009 to March 2020 in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital at Gangdong.<br/>Since the insurance coverage was started in 2019, the frequency of permanent molar composite resin restoration aged 12 and under has increased more than twice. There was a significant change in frequency of resin restoration by shape of cavity comparing before and after the insurance coverage, whereas there was no significant difference in changes by patient age, gender and position of tooth.<br/>As accessibility to the permanent tooth composite resin restoration is increased by the insurance coverage, which shows a fair survival rate, it is expected that it could be able to secure oral health in the early permanent dentition aged 12 and under.

Either obesity and underweight are public health concerns that affect the development of children. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the nutritional status affects permanent tooth eruption chronology in Brazilian children. Methods: A hundred sixty children were examined by a pediatric dentistry and at the clinical examination, the number of erupted permanent teeth was evaluated. The anthropometric measurements of the children were determined, and they were divided into groups: underweight, eutrophic, overweight and obese. The association between delayed tooth eruption and nutritional status groups was evaluated using chi-square test. The Shapiro–Wilk test was used to verify the normality of the data. To compare the mean number of delayed teeth according to nutritional status’ groups Kruskal-Wallis test with multiple comparison by Dunn's test was performed. Results: Fifty-six children had delayed tooth eruption in at least one permanent teeth and delayed tooth eruption was more common in underweight children than in eutrophic children (p=0.0091). Conclusion: In conclusion, our study suggests that underweight Brazilian children have a higher incidence of delayed eruption.

Abstract An impacted or missing permanent tooth can add significant complications to an otherwise straightforward case. When multiple impacted teeth are present, the case complexity increases further. Developing a treatment sequence, determining appropriate anchorage, and planning and executing sound biomechanics can be a challenge. The following case report illustrates a patient reportedly diagnosed with mild scleroderma as an adolescent. He presented for orthodontic treatment as an adult with multiple retained primary teeth and multiple impacted teeth. Diagnosis, treatment planning, and various methods of managing guided eruption of impacted teeth will be discussed. Following orthodontic treatment that required extraction of multiple primary and permanent teeth as well as exposure and ligation of multiple permanent teeth by an oral surgeon, the patient finished with a significantly improved functional and esthetic result.

The aim: The paper was aimed at the study of the processes of mineralization of the enamel of the permanent tooth after its eruption. Materials and methods: To study the structure of the enamel of permanent teeth has been carried out using light and electron microscopy. The study of the process of the development of the primordia of the permanent teeth involved 10 culled puppies of 30-40 days of age. Microscopic, electron microscopic, immunohistochemical methods of research have been used to study the processes of histogenesis. Results: The studies show that in the postnatal period, the formation of the crown, externally covered with cuticular epithelium, marks the formation of the primordium of the permanent tooth at the follicle stage. After eruption of a tooth, different parts of its crown have three individual structural and functional barriers to enamel biomineralization. The first one is provided by the cuticular epithelium of the pitted areas of the crown, which ensures filtering of the salivary fluid from the protein deposit in the form of a pellicle. The second barrier is defined on the lateral and cuspidate surfaces of the enamel, where the cuticle is erased or poorly expressed. The third structural and functional barrier of enamel biomineralization is located in the cervical portion of teeth of different classes. Conclusions: Different areas of the enamel in the tooth crown have specific filtration barriers, which can be distinguished as follows: pit-and-fissure-and-groove, cuspidateand-approximal, and cervical barriers. The cuticle is poorly expressed or totally absent on the cusps of the tooth crowns in contrast to pitted areas.

Background: An injury to both the primary and permanent teeth and the supporting structures is one of the most common dental problems seen in children. Splinting is usually difficult or impossible to perform in the primary dentition (due to diminutive room size and lack of patient cooperation). Healing must, therefore, occur despite mobility at the fracture line, usually resulting in interposition of connective tissue. In some instances, infection will occur in the coronal pulp. The present study reported a case of trauma to the anterior primary teeth and alveolar bone in a four year old child. The trauma has caused fracture to the crowns and roots of the primary anterior teeth. The following case was managed in a procedure that may provide primary teeth subjected to trauma a better chance than extraction with a better prognosis. Case presentation: a 4 and a half year old child was subjected to trauma in anterior segment of maxilla. Suturing of the torn soft tissue was the first step followed by pulpotomy for the left primary lateral incisor. Fixation of the right primary central and lateral incisors was done by acid etch wire fixation. Both clinical and radiographic follow up was carried out for 6.4 years. Results: healing of the soft tissue was observed after one week and completed after two months. Fixation of the teeth continued for ten months. The fracture lines in the roots remained in position. Clinically there was no sign of any pulpal inflammation or necrosis. Radiographically, no signs of infection to the surrounding tissues could be seen, no resorption in the alveolar bone, external or internal resorption of the root did not happen also. After ten months fixation ended and the wire was removed. At that time there was normal resorption of the roots of the primary incisors in relation with the normal development of the permanent incisors. After 3 years both permanent central incisors erupted in their normal position. After 6.4 years all four permanent incisors erupted into occlusion in their normal position. Conclusion: primary teeth with root fractures and severely mobile coronal fragments can be treated by a conservative approach. The severity of the sequels is directly related to the degree of permanent tooth formation (child’s age), type of dental trauma and extent of the impact. In genera Anastrepha, Bactrocera and Ceratitis of the tephritid fruit flies the auto-regulatory function of gene transformer is assumed to be activated by maternal derived mRNA or the proteins of the gene transformer (tra-2 mat) and transformer-2 (tra-2mat). However, this maternal effect was not yet been demonstrated. The objective of the present study was to test the effect of absence of tra-2mat in the eggs on the sex determination of A. sp.1 affinis fraterculus. This was achieved by silencing gene tra-2 in the parental females via the pRNA interference. The data showed that tra-2 was transiently silenced in the female for three weeks period. The progenies sex ratio produced by these females during the silencing of tra-2 depart from 1:1 in favor of males. The excess of males was due to the transformation of a fraction of genotypical female XX embryos into XX males, the so-called pseudomales, Individual F1 males from the offspring of treated females crossed to females from the stock, revealed that majority of them showed regular mating behavior and were fertile. However, no offspring was produced in the crosses by a fraction of males that have produced sperms, showed regular mating behavior but did not transfer sperms to the females. The data allow the conclusion that the absence of tra-2mat in the eggs had impaired the self-regulation of the embryonic gene tra resulting in the transformation of XX embryos into pseudomales and also that these pseudomales are sterile. This effect may be useful improve more sustainable technologies for fruit fly control such as SIT.

Relevance. Shoulder prosthetics is the method of choice in the treatment of patients with traumatic injuries that significantly impair joint function and are accompanied by prolonged pain. Objective: to investigate the main causes of injuries of the shoulder joint that led to its prosthetics. Materials and Methods. The clinical group consisted of 162 patients who underwent shoulder prosthetics in the Department of Microsurgery and Reconstructive Surgery of the Upper Limb of the SI “Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of NAMS of Ukraine”. There were 44.4% male and 55.5% female patients. The average age of male patients was 62±11.4 years; the average age of female patients was 66±10.1 years. The average period of seeking specialized medical care after an acute injury was 24±10.9 days and 50.6±81.1 months in patients with post-traumatic consequences. In most cases, patients underwent unipolar prosthetics of the shoulder joint (126 patients, 78.7%); 27 patients (15.6%) underwent reversible prosthetics and 9 (5.6%) – total prosthetics, respectively. Results. In most cases, shoulder prosthetics were performed in patients with acute (up to 3 weeks from the date of injury) and old fractures and fractures of the proximal epimetaphysis of the humerus – 35 (21.6%) and 48 (29.6%) patients, respectively. The number of patients with posttraumatic aseptic necrosis of the humeral head was 49 (30.2%) (p<0.005), which indicates a high frequency of complications after osteosynthesis etc. The number of patients with massive traumatic injuries of the tendons of the rotator cuff who needed shoulder prosthetics was 18 (11.1%) and with false joints – 12 (7.4%). Unipolar prosthesis systems predominated in the general structure of the prosthesis type (126 patients, 78.7%), since reversible and total prosthesis in Ukraine were registered not so long ago. Conclusions. The analysis of our observations showed that the causes of shoulder prosthetics are severe injuries that occur with high-energy injuries (101 patients, 62.3%) and post-traumatic aseptic necrosis (49 patients, 30.2%). Acute and old fractures and fractures of the proximal metaepiphysis of the humerus are one of the most common injuries according to the analysis (35 patients, 21.6% and 48 patients, 29.6%), and their number and complexity continues to increase with age. Understanding the etiological factors that led to shoulder endoprosthetics makes it possible to predict long-term functional results and work to reduce the number of such patients.

Abstract This study investigated families' perspectives about and strategies used to develop foundational skills (i.e., choice-making, self-regulation, and engagement) leading to the development of the self-determination of their young children with disabilities. Two research questions guided the study: (1) What do families believe is important when working with practitioners in partnership to build foundational skills leading to self-determination at home and school? (2) What do families think about providing opportunities for developing these skills, and how do they provide such opportunities? Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and an open-ended online survey. Families reported a variety of strategies used to develop choice-making, self-regulation, and engagement skills. Results can assist early education service providers to better understand how families conceptualize choice-making, self-regulation, and engagement for their children to successfully build partnerships and engage families.

This chapter provides a description of five models for professional development (PD) for online instruction and analyzes each model according to domains of effective online instruction (i.e., faculty stance, student self-regulation, faculty support, authentic practice, engagement, community development, and cognitive demand). Additionally, a decision model is provided for K-12 and university administrators, teacher educators, and policymakers to guide strategic decision making in the determination of a model for PD best suited to the needs and resources of their institution.
