Integration of Relational and Textual Biomedical Sources

Summary Objectives: Bringing together structured and text-based sources is an exciting challenge for biomedical informaticians, since most relevant biomedical sources belong to one of these categories. In this paper we evaluate the feasibility of integrating relational and text-based biomedical sources using: i) an original logical schema acquisition method for textual databases developed by the authors, and ii) OntoFusion, a system originally designed by the authors for the integration of relational sources. Methods: We conducted an integration experiment involving a test set of seven differently structured sources covering the domain of genetic diseases. We used our logical schema acquisition method to generate schemas for all textual sources. The sources were integrated using the methods and tools provided by OntoFusion. The integration was validated using a test set of 500 queries. Results: A panel of experts answered a questionnaire to evaluate i) the quality of the extracted schemas, ii) the query processing performance of the integrated set of sources, and iii) the relevance of the retrieved results. The results of the survey show that our method extracts coherent and representative logical schemas. Experts’ feedback on the performance of the integrated system and the relevance of the retrieved results was also positive. Regarding the validation of the integration, the system successfully provided correct results for all queries in the test set. Conclusions: The results of the experiment suggest that text-based sources including a logical schema can be regarded as equivalent to structured databases. Using our method, previous research and existing tools designed for the integration of structured databases can be reused – possibly subject to minor modifications – to integrate differently structured sources.

The electric power system, as an integrated system for transmission, distribution and consumption of electricity, is one of the most complex technical and economic systems today. Customers affect on the voltage quality of power network, but the network also has an impact on customers. All disturbances in the network can disrupt operation of the network and affect on operation of the customers, as well as reduce the level of efficiency and operation life or even seriously damage network. Number of customers is increasing every day, as well as proportion of customers who generate disturbances in the network and, at the same time, are sensitive to them. These circumstances impose the need for frequent monitoring of the network, so the analysis of power quality is not unjustified cost but extremely important and profitable investment. The quality of electricity, as part of the overall quality supply of electricity customers in deregulated conditions of liberal electricity market becomes significant regulatory parameter for network operators and a significant contracting parameter on the electricity market. Network operators are obliged to establish a system of individual measurements and a system of permanent monitoring of power quality parameters to determine the state and improve the parameters to the standardized level. Technical parameters are determined by the recommendations made at the international level and may, but do not need, be legally binding. Maintaining a certain level of voltage quality at some point of the network is the responsibility of electricity distributor. This task distributor executes by limiting of negative effects of producer/customer to the network. Therefore, each electricity producer/customer is obliged to reduce own negative feedback effects (injection of higher harmonics, taking of reactive power, emissions of flickers and loads unbalances) to a prescribed, prearranged, limited values. There are many norms that describe the quality of electricity, but in Europe the best known is EN50160 (issued by CENLEC). This paper presents the approach to measuring the voltage quality at the point of electricity delivery from distributed source into distribution network from the aspect of limiting the negative feedback of distributed source on the voltage quality.

Hereditary or developmental neurological disorders (HNDs or DNDs) affect the quality of life and contribute to the high mortality rates among neonates. Most HNDs are incurable, and the search for new and effective treatments is hampered by challenges peculiar to the human brain, which is guarded by the near-impervious blood-brain barrier. Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR), a gene-editing tool repurposed from bacterial defense systems against viruses, has been touted by some as a panacea for genetic diseases. CRISPR has expedited the research into HNDs, enabling the generation of in vitro and in vivo models to simulate the changes in human physiology caused by genetic variation. In this review, we describe the basic principles and workings of CRISPR and the modifications that have been made to broaden its applications. Then, we review important CRISPR-based studies that have opened new doors to the treatment of HNDs such as fragile X syndrome and Down syndrome. We also discuss how CRISPR can be used to generate research models to examine the effects of genetic variation and caffeine therapy on the developing brain. Several drawbacks of CRISPR may preclude its use at the clinics, particularly the vulnerability of neuronal cells to the adverse effect of gene editing, and the inefficiency of CRISPR delivery into the brain. In concluding the review, we offer some suggestions for enhancing the gene-editing efficacy of CRISPR and how it may be morphed into safe and effective therapy for HNDs and other brain disorders.

The purpose of the study is to substantiate the need to support the system of professional training of public servants as a necessary condition for the modernization of public service. The methodological basis of the work is a socio-cultural approach in combination with the methods of sociological diagnostics – questionnaires and observation. Substantiated conditions for the implementation of the professional project of civil servants in Ukraine. It is emphasized that maintaining an integrated system of vocational training has significant advantages, such as: ensuring the appropriate level and quality of educational programs, the formation of vocational education and research environment, taking into account the educational needs of public servants. Application of research results: Emphasis is placed on the need to amend the Concept of reforming the system of professional training of civil servants, heads of local state administrations, their first deputies and deputies, local government officials and deputies of local councils to preserve the priority of the National Academy of Public Administration and its regional institutes. Іn the integrated system of professional training of public servants. It is proved that the integral implementation of the professional project of public servants is possible only if the system of elite education is preserved.

The course is one of the education provided outside formal (non-formal) schools to develop personal abilities and skills. Eden Everyday English Course Institute is an Institution located in Bogor. In this institution, the registration process for students is done manually by filling in the registration form provided by the admin. Eden Everyday English Course Institute is one of the courses where the number of applicants increases every year, this causes the administration department cannot manage everything properly and feels overwhelmed so that it is not effective. With the increase in the number of students registering each year, it would be better if a web-based registration system was created, so that it could simultaneously serve as a medium for promoting the course institution. The purpose of this research is to create a web-based application to help the process of registration for new students in Eden Everyday English Course Institute using the waterfall method. Many studies, especially in the field of information system development, use the Waterfall method. This online course registration application is effective and efficient because it is supported by an integrated system. This application improves the quality of information and the efficiency of the implementation of online course registration.

Road lighting information is an important record in road network databases. It has been frequently observed that such data are either missing or not updated due to the high data collection cost using traditional methods. This paper presents a new methodology for identifying and (or) resolving missing and conflicting road lighting data in road network databases. The methodology is based on: (i) integrating the single-line road network (SLRN) in a geographic information system format with a road network database and (ii) integrating the SLRN with a collision database. Missing and conflicting lighting data are resolved using a semi-automatic method for extracting streetlight pole information. The integrated system can also identify inconsistencies related to short segments and segments with mixed illumination characteristics. Inconsistencies in the traffic volume database were also examined and the effect of data inconsistency on safety performance functions was evaluated. The proposed methodology represents an inexpensive, efficient tool for improving the quality of road network databases and associated road safety analysis.

Business Process Management (BPM) brings together the idea of effectively managing organizations and properly using Information Technology to fulfill organizations’ needs. For this purpose, BPM systems are largely used nowadays. However, most process models are started from scratch, not having reuse promoted. Sometimes, large enterprises have the same business process implemented in a variety of ways due to differences in their departmental cultures or environments, even when using a unique integrated system. Additionally, although technology plays an important role in actually improving organizations, the human factor is still fundamental, since any improvement attempt goes through cultural changes. In this chapter, a peer-to-peer (P2P) tool is proposed as a way to cooperatively develop business processes models, minimizing the time needed to develop such models, reducing the differences among similar processes conducted in distinct organizational units, enhancing the quality of models, promoting reuse, and distributing knowledge.

Regular dry dock maintenance work on ship hulls is essential for maintaining the efficiency and sustainability of the shipping industry. Hydro blasting is one of the major processes of dry dock maintenance work, where human labor is extensively used. The conventional methods of maintenance work suffer from many shortcomings, and hence robotized solutions have been developed. This paper proposes a novel robotic system that can synthesize a benchmarking map for a previously blasted ship hull. A Self-Organizing Fuzzy logic (SOF) classifier has been developed to benchmark the blasting quality of a ship hull similar to blasting quality categorization done by human experts. Hornbill, a multipurpose inspection and maintenance robot intended for hydro blasting, benchmarking, and painting, has been developed by integrating the proposed SOF classifier. Moreover, an integrated system solution has been developed to improve dry dock maintenance of ship hulls. The proposed SOF classifier can achieve a mean accuracy of 0.9942 with an execution time of 8.42 µs. Realtime experimenting with the proposed robotic system has been conducted on a ship hull. This experiment confirms the ability of the proposed robotic system in synthesizing a benchmarking map that reveals the benchmarking quality of different areas of a previously blasted ship hull. This sort of a benchmarking map would be useful for ensuring the blasting quality as well as performing efficient spot wise reblasting before the painting. Therefore, the proposed robotic system could be utilized for improving the efficiency and quality of hydro blasting work on the ship hull maintenance industry.

Globally, transport authorities are investing to improve the quality of public transport (PT) services by developing integrated networks. The success of these networks relies on multimodal transfers. However, making a transfer means more time will be spent outside the vehicle compared with a direct route, and for women, this means being exposed to the urban environment of stations for longer. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role gender plays in people’s decisions to make transfers, in order to develop integrated systems that are equitable. A survey was undertaken in three major cities in New Zealand. A total of 2,173 people, car drivers, and PT users participated. Results show that women drivers are 30% more likely than men to make a transfer, given time savings. Waiting time is the most influential factor and has a greater effect on women’s decisions to make transfers. The factor “perceived safety at stations” was only significant for female riders. With the presence of security guards, female car drivers were three times more likely to ride a route with transfer, compared with males who were two times more likely. Women, car drivers, and PT users were slightly more likely to make a transfer given good quality information and covered walkways. It is expected that these results will provide practitioners with some guidance when designing transfers for an integrated system. The limitations women face during their travels can be alleviated by implementing a PT system that is designed to meet their needs more closely.

Essentially, the purpose of investment in information systems and information technology (IS/IT) is to improve the operational efficiency of the organizations, reducing costs and improving levels of quality. Thus, many traditional appraisal techniques are used to evaluate tangible benefits, which are based on direct project costs. Since the 1980s, IS/IT has positioned itself as a strategic tool that through flexibility and innovative ways can produce superior performance. The health sector has sought to improve its effectiveness and efficiency by adopting IS/IT solutions to increase the quality of services, namely patient safety, organizational efficiency, and end-user satisfaction. Hospitals are complex organizations, and this complexity magnifies the opportunity for inevitable human errors. A poorly integrated system can decrease operational efficiency and reduce the quality of healthcare services. The issue remains controversial, as evidenced by several articles. The authors noticed that emergent technologies may offer opportunities to those who can exploit them effectively.
