In this study, we isolated a strain of photosynthetic bacteria from landscape water located in Southwest University, Chongqing, China, and named it Smobiisys501. Smobiisys501 was Rhodopseudomonas sp. according to its cell morphological properties and absorption spectrum analysis of living cells. The analysis of the 16S rDNA amplification sequence with specific primers of photosynthetic bacteria showed that the homology between Smobiisys501 and Rhodopseudomonas sp. was 100%, and the alignment results of protein sequences of the bacterial chlorophyll Y subunit showed that Smobiisys501 and Rhodopseudomonas palustris were the most similar, with a similarity of more than 92%. However, Smobiisys501 could not utilize glucose and mannitol as a carbon source and had a low fatty acid content, which were different from the related strains of the genus Rhodopseudomonas. Moreover, the DNA-DNA relatedness was only 42.2 ± 3.3% between Smobiisys501 and the closest strain Rhodopseudomonas palustris. Smobiisys501 grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 7.0 in the presence of yeast extract, and it could efficiently remove ammonium (99.67% removal efficiency) from synthetic ammonium wastewater. All the results indicated that Smobiisys501 was a novel species of Rhodopseudomonas, with the ability to remove ammonium.

Following the July 22, 2011, Oslo bombing and shootings at the Utøya youth camp Norway became embroiled in a conflict over commemorative ethics. The memorial initially selected in an international contest, Memory Wound by Jonas Dahlgren, drew opposition from victims’ families and local residents for its severe impact on the natural landscape. Plans for installation were cancelled in 2017. This controversy, we submit, must be contextualized in relation to the Norwegian justice system’s handling of Anders Breivik, the perpetrator whose criminal proceedings were kept relatively secluded. We demonstrate how the design of Memory Wound and the suppression of Breivik’s publicity reflect a symbolic logic traceable to a national imaginary of Norwegian exceptionalism. By interpretively aligning the use of negative space in Memory Wound with the muting of Breivik as a media event, we investigate the prescriptive force of symbols to inculcate world views. Specifically, we attend to the foreclosure of “prosthetic memory,” which through media circulation allows people to engage with memory that is not primarily theirs. We acknowledge the possibility of empathy across difference that Landsberg ascribes to prosthetic memory; however, we insist that the circumstances under which solidarity might be rejected must be considered. With a dual case study, we offer a perspective on enduring assumptions about cultural identity and the rise of rightwing extremism in Northern Europe.

The evolution of salt tolerance is interesting for several reasons. First, since salt-tolerant plants (halophytes) employ several different mechanisms to deal with salt, the evolution of salt tolerance represents a fascinating case study in the evolution of a complex trait. Second, the diversity of mechanisms employed by halophytes, based on processes common to all plants, sheds light on the way that a plant’s physiology can become adapted to deal with extreme conditions. Third, as the amount of salt-affected land increases around the globe, understanding the origins of the diversity of halophytes should provide a basis for the use of novel species in bioremediation and conservation. In this review we pose the question, how many times has salt tolerance evolved since the emergence of the land plants some 450–470 million years ago? We summarise the physiological mechanisms underlying salt-tolerance and provide an overview of the number and diversity of salt-tolerant terrestrial angiosperms (defined as plants that survive to complete their life cycle in at least 200 mM salt). We consider the evolution of halophytes using information from fossils and phylogenies. Finally, we discuss the potential for halophytes to contribute to agriculture and land management and ask why, when there are naturally occurring halophytes, it is proving to be difficult to breed salt-tolerant crops.

This inoculation method inputting photosynthetic bacteria, nitrifying bacteria, compound bacteria etc into the water, to degrade pollutants of the urban lakes in this paper. The results show that, the removal rates of organic substance, chlorophyll-a and nitrogen compounds were 60%, 90% and 50% respectively .Moreover, dissolved oxygen (DO) content increased from 1 to 7 mg/L by adding microbes. The conclusion can be drawn that its feasible for adding microbes into eutrophication water to decontaminate water.

Abstract Historical maps are a valuable resource in landscape research. The information gathered from them facilitates the cognisance of landscapes and may assist current landscape planning. This study focuses on the historical occurrence and spatial extent of man-made ponds in the Czech Republic. Based on the 1st Military Survey maps (1764–1783) of the Habsburg Monarchy, we use Historical GIS to identify 7,676 man-made ponds in the historical landscape. Compared to the 2nd Military Survey maps (1836–1852), 56% of these man-made ponds had been drained. Such disappearances mostly affected large ponds in fertile agricultural areas, but also affected small reservoirs in less fertile areas at higher altitudes. As the current maps and spatial datasets (Water reservoirs, Landscape water regime, Farming areas) show, a number of these agricultural regions have been affected by climate changes and face water shortages. The historical map information of former ponds has the potential to contribute to their restoration in areas where water retention in the landscape needs to be increased.

Abstract In recent years, the photosynthetic bacteria have been used widely in agriculture, but the effects of different agricultural applications on crop rhizosphere microorganism and crops are lack. In this study, we provide new insights into the structure and composition of the rice root-associated microbiomes as well as the effect on crop of the Rhodopseudomonas palustris(R. palustris) PSB06 and CGA009 at the rice seedling stage with seed immersion and root irrigation. Compare with CK group, the length of stem, the peroxidase (POD), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in PSB06 treatment group was significantly higher, while the length of stem in CGA009 treatment group was significantly higher. The POD and SOD activities in CGA009 treatment groups only were higher slightly than the CK group. In the study, the dominant phyla were Proteobacteria (51.95–61.66%), Bacteroidetes (5.40–9.39%), Acidobacteria (4.50–10.52%), Actinobacteria (5.06–8.14%), Planctomycetes (2.90–4.48%), Chloroflexi (2.23–5.06%) and Firmicutes (2.38–7.30%), accounted for 87% bacterial sequences. The principal coordinate analysis (pCoA) and mantel results showed the two application actions of R. palustris CGA009 and PSB06 had significant effects on rice rhizosphere bacterial communities (p < 0.05). The PSB06 can significantly promote the rice growth and enhance stress resistance of rice at the seedling stage, while the R. palustris CGA009 has no significant effect on rice. Dissimilarity test and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) results showed that the TN and pH were the key factors affecting rice rhizosphere bacterial community in the seedling stage. This study will provide some guidance advices for the study of the microecological regulation of photosynthetic bacteria on crops.

Four strains (JA310T, JA531T, JA447 and JA490) of red to reddish brown pigmented, rod-shaped, motile and budding phototrophic bacteria were isolated from soil and freshwater sediment samples from different geographical regions of India. All strains contained bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the spirilloxanthin series. The major cellular fatty acid of strains JA310T and JA531T was C18 : 1ω7c, the quinone was Q-10 and polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, an aminohopanoid and an unidentified aminolipid. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that all strains clustered with species of the genus Rhodopseudomonas in the class Alphaproteobacteria . Strains JA531T, JA447 and JA490 were genotypically (>80 % related based on DNA–DNA hybridization) and phenotypically closely related to each other and the three strains were distinct from strain JA310T (33 % related). Furthermore, all four strains had less than 48 % relatedness (DNA–DNA hybridization) with type strains of members of the genus Rhodopseudomonas , i.e. Rhodopseudomonas palustris ATCC 17001T, Rhodopseudomonas faecalis JCM 11668T and Rhodopseudomonas rhenobacensis DSM 12706T. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains JA310T and JA531T were 63.8 and 62.4 mol%, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular genetic evidence, it is proposed that strains JA310T ( = NBRC 106083T = KCTC 5839T) and JA531T ( = NBRC 107575T = KCTC 5841T) be classified as the type strains of two novel species of the genus Rhodopseudomonas , Rhodopseudomonas parapalustris sp. nov. and Rhodopseudomonas harwoodiae sp. nov., respectively. In addition, we propose that strain DSM 123T ( = NBRC 100419T) represents a novel species, Rhodopseudomonas pseudopalustris sp. nov., since this strain differs genotypically and phenotypically from R. palustris ATCC 17001T and other members of the genus Rhodopseudomonas . An emended description of R. palustris is also provided.

This paper presents a case study of the village of Mrkovi in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro, showing the importance of landscape identification and assessment in planning the revitalization and development of Mediterranean rural settlements. The research revealed the methods of identification and evaluation of different landscape types. Moreover, it showed how such an approach could considerably contribute to the preservation of the space’s identity and quality by taking into account the existing characteristics of the space or the relationship between cultural and natural heritage. The identification of the landscape types was followed by the evaluation of individual elements and assessment of vulnerability in relation to the space’s natural, cultural, and visual quality. The first step in the process of preserving the elements that contribute to the landscape’s identity was the spatial identification of the cultural pattern of traditional terraces with drystone walls. The results of analysis indicate a high risk of degradation of the basic landscape value. The effects of future interventions in the space, especially the planned construction of a tourist resort, can be mitigated if they comply with the guidelines related to the rational use of the space and delimitation of the construction zones. This paper points out the importance of a responsible attitude and planned approach regarding the cultural and natural landscape of Mediterranean rural settlements.

Three bacterial isolates from air samples in Korea, designated strains 6424S-25T, 6515J-31T and 6424S-61T, were characterized using a polyphasic approach. The cells were strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped. Phylogenetic analysis of their 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a clear affiliation with the phylum Bacteroidetes. Strains 6424S-25T and 6515J-31T showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 92.7–94.8 % to type strains of recognized species of the genus Adhaeribacter and strain 6424S-61T was closely related to Segetibacter koreensis Gsoil 664T (93.9 % similarity). The G+C contents of the DNA of strains 6424S-25T, 6515J-31T and 6424S-61T were 44.5, 43.9 and 38.4 mol%, respectively. Major fatty acids of strains 6424S-25T and 6515J-31T were summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B), iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω5c. The fatty acid content of strain 6424S-61T mainly comprised iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C15 : 0. Comparative analysis of phenotypic and phylogenetic traits indicated that strains 6424S-25T and 6515J-31T represented two novel species of the genus Adhaeribacter and that strain 6424S-61T should be considered as a novel species of the genus Segetibacter. The names Adhaeribacter aerophilus sp. nov. (type strain 6424S-25T =KACC 14118T =NBRC 106134T), Adhaeribacter aerolatus sp. nov. (type strain 6515J-31T =KACC 14117T =NBRC 106133T) and Segetibacter aerophilus sp. nov. (type strain 6424S-61T =KACC 14119T =NBRC 106135T) are proposed for these organisms.

The taxonomic status of an actinomycete isolated from sediment collected from the Mariana Trench was established using a combination of genotypic and phenotypic data. Isolate MT8T had chemotaxonomic and morphological properties consistent with its classification in the genus Williamsia, and formed a distinct phyletic line in the 16S rRNA gene tree together with the type strain of Williamsia muralis. The isolate was readily distinguished from the latter, and from representatives of other Williamsia species, using DNA–DNA relatedness and phenotypic criteria. Predominant cellular fatty acids were oleic, palmitic and tuberculostearic acids and a hexadecenoic acid. The DNA G+C content was 65.2 mol%. It is apparent that the isolate belongs to a novel species of Williamsia. Strain MT8T (=DSM 44944T=NCIMB 14085T) was thus considered to be the type strain of a novel species in the genus Williamsia, for which the name Williamsia marianensis sp. nov. is proposed.
