A case study on the application of the River Water Quality Model No. 1 (RWQM1) is presented in order to illustrate the importance of modelling a sediment compartment for an ecologically meaningful assessment of the impact of wastewater effluents and combined sewer overflows. The focus of this case study is on the compartmentalisation approach of the RWQM1 that makes such a description possible. In contrast to this, a strongly simplified biochemical submodel is used that considers only oxygen and dissolved substrate. The object of the case study is the River Lahn, a moderately polluted 5th order stream in Germany, for which the connectivity of surface/subsurface flows and mass fluxes within river sediments have been intensively investigated. The hyporheic flow between a downwelling and upwelling zone of a riffle-pool sequence has been studied with the aid of tracer experiments and continuous records of water constituents. High diurnal fluctuations of oxygen travelled to considerable depth of the sediment and oxygen in the interstitial water decreased considerably while travelling through the riffle. Starting with the implementation of a strongly simplified version of the biochemical part of the RWQM1, but with the consideration of a sediment pore water compartment in addition to the water column compartment, a calibration procedure is performed using tracer data from the water column and the sediment. The calibrated model is then used to study the system response to wastewater treatment plant effluent and combined sewer overflow emissions. The modelling approach makes it possible to quantify the sediment oxygen demand and the spatial and temporal extent of sediment zones with oxygen depletion. However, the spatially averaged approach does not account for inhomogeneities in the sediment. It is shown that for this river with its alluvial coarse sediments even moderate emissions from sewerage systems may be high enough to drop sediment oxygen concentrations to low levels while those in the surface flow remain close to saturation. Similarly, it is demonstrated that combined sewer overflows may cause anoxic sediment oxygen conditions for extended time periods. The implications for ecologically sound river water quality modelling and for specific quality objectives are discussed.

The Impact

A key control on the response of an urban drainage model is how well the observed rainfall records represent the real rainfall variability. Particularly in urban catchments with fast response flow regimes, the selection of temporal resolution in rainfall data collection is critical. Furthermore, the impact of the rainfall variability on the model response is amplified for water quality estimates, as uncertainty in rainfall intensity affects both the rainfall-runoff and pollutant wash-off sub-models, thus compounding uncertainties. A modelling study was designed to investigate the impact of altering rainfall temporal resolution on the magnitude and behaviour of uncertainties associated with the hydrological modelling compared with water quality modelling. The case study was an 85-ha combined sewer sub-catchment in Bogotá (Colombia). Water quality estimates showed greater sensitivity to the inter-event variability in rainfall hyetograph characteristics than to changes in the rainfall input temporal resolution. Overall, uncertainties from the water quality model were two- to five-fold those of the hydrological model. However, owing to the intrinsic scarcity of observations in urban water quality modelling, total model output uncertainties, especially from the water quality model, were too large to make recommendations for particular model structures or parameter values with respect to rainfall temporal resolution.

The combined sewer overflows (CSO) pollution has caused many serious environmental problems, which has aroused a worldwide concern. Traditional interception-storage measures, which exhibit the disadvantages of the larger storage tank volume and the low concentration, cannot efficiently control the CSO pollution. To solve this problem, a water quality-based double-gate control strategy based on the pollution based real-time control (PBRTC) rule was proposed, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration was taken as the control index. A case study was carried out in Fuzhou, China as an example, in which the hydraulic and water quality model were constructed to evaluate two schemes. According to the results, compared to the traditional scheme, the double-gate scheme can not only reduce the storage tank volume by 1515 m3, but also increase the average COD interception rate by 1.84 times, thus ensuring the effective and stable operation of the facility. Furthermore, the traditional scheme and the double-gate scheme were evaluated under design rainfall beyond the design return period, which confirmed the high performance of the double-gate scheme in controlling CSO pollution.

The Navile Channel (Bologna, Italy) is an ancient artificial water course derived from the Reno river. It is the main receiving water body for the urban catchment of Bologna sewer systems and also for the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) main outlet. The aim of this work is to evaluate the Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) impact on Navile Channel's water quality. In order to collect Navile flow and water quality data in both dry and wet weather conditions, two measuring and sampling stations were installed, right upstream and downstream the WWTP outflow. The study shows that even in case of low intensity rain events, CSOs have a significant effect on both water quantity and quality, spilling a considerable amount of pollutants into the Navile Channel and presenting also acute toxicity effects. The collected data shown a good correlations between the concentrations of TSS and of chemical compounds analyzed, suggesting that the most part of such substances is attached to suspended solids. Resulting toxicity values are fairly high in both measuring points and seem to confirm synergistic interactions between heavy metals.

The Impact

The objective of this paper is the definition of a methodology to evaluate the impact of the temporal resolution of rainfall measurements in urban drainage modelling applications. More specifically the effect of the temporal resolution on urban water quality modelling is detected analysing the uncertainty of the response of rainfall–runoff modelling. Analyses have been carried out using historical rainfall–discharge data collected for the Fossolo catchment (Bologna, Italy). According to the methodology, the historical rainfall data are taken as a reference, and resampled data have been obtained through a rescaling procedure with variable temporal windows. The shape comparison between ‘true’ and rescaled rainfall data has been carried out using a non-dimensional accuracy index. Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out applying a parsimonious urban water quality model, using the recorded data and the resampled events. The results of the simulations were used to derive the cumulative probabilities of quantity and quality model outputs (peak discharges, flow volume, peak concentrations and pollutant mass) conditioned on the observation according to the GLUE (Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation) methodology. The results showed that when coarser rainfall information is available, the model calibration process is still efficient even if modelling uncertainty progressively increases especially with regards to water quality aspects.

A method for stochastic analysis of the effect of combined sewer overflows on the dissolved oxygen concentration in receiving rivers is developed. The method is based on repeated operation of the water quality model MOUSE-DOSMO. Each operation of this model covers a series of overflow events calculated by the MOUSE-SAMBA runoff model based on a historical rainfall record. For each event selected input data and model parameters in both models are drawn from fundamental statistical distributions by a simple Monte Carlo method. These data and parameters vary from event to event in each series. Each operation of the MOUSE-DOSMO model results in an extreme event statistics on dissolved oxygen minimum values -while repeated operation of the model yields extreme event percentiles by means of which a probability-based assessment of the model result may be performed.

The City

For the city of Dresden a general master plan was set up based on investigations of the hydraulic capacity of the sewer system, the loads from combined sewer overflow and the treatment plant. The total emission from combined sewer overflows and treatment plant was the main criteria for the analysis of the efficiency of different renovation alternatives. The effect of the different alternatives on the quality of the receiving waters was investigated with a water quality model and evaluated with different approaches.
