The use of recycled aggregate to reduce the over-exploitation of raw aggregates is necessary. This study analysed and categorised the properties of water-washed, fine and coarse, recycled aggregates following European Normalization (EN) specification. Because of their adequate properties, zero impurities and chemical soluble salts, plain recycled concrete was produced using 100% recycled concrete aggregates. Two experimental phases were conducted. Firstly, a laboratory phase, and secondly, an on-site work consisting of a real-scale pavement-base layer. The workability of the produced concretes was validated using two types of admixtures. In addition, the compressive and flexural strength, physical properties, drying shrinkage and depth of penetration of water under pressure validated the concrete design. The authors concluded that the worksite-produced concrete properties were similar to those obtained in the laboratory. Consequently, the laboratory results could be validated for large-scale production. An extended slump value was achieved using 2.5–3% of a multifunctional admixture plus 1–1.2% of superplasticiser in concrete production. In addition, all the produced concretes obtained the required a strength of 20 MPa. Although the pavement-base was produced using 300 kg of cement, the concrete made with 270 kg of cement per m3 and water/cement ratio of 0.53 achieved the best properties with the lowest environmental impact.

Construction is a serious environmental problem and a challenge for people who concerned with sustainability in the construction field. Previous studies showed positive results for the use of recycled aggregates in the concrete production. This study portrays the results for utilizing construction debris for casting different types of concrete blocks. The recycled concrete debris was used in different ratios (0%, 50%, and 100%) in replacement for natural coarse aggregates for different targeted compressive strength (B250, B300, B350 and B400). Two types of water (pure and sea water) were used for curing the blocks. In addition, hollow block and paving block were casted with different ratios of recycled aggregate (0%, 20%, 45% and 100%) and cured with two types of water. The results showed a decrease in compressive strength with the increase recycled aggregate content. It was also noticed that the absorption capacity increases with high recycled aggregate content.

Recycled aggregates are those crushed cement concrete or asphalt pavement which comes out from the construction debris which is reused in construction. They are made from the reprocessing of materials which have been used in previous constructions. This paper discusses about the study of properties of recycled aggregates from the sources which has already been published. The results are that 100% replacement of natural aggregate by recycled concrete aggregate effect on chloride ions resistance, it plays negative effects on durability of recycled concrete aggregates, and addition of fiber in recycled aggregate concrete mixture gave more effective in the performance of concrete. On experimental study of recycled aggregate, compressive, flexural and split tensile strength of the recycled aggregate were found to be lower than that of the natural aggregate. Use of recycled aggregate in a new concrete production is still limited. Recommendation of introduction of recycled aggregates standard is required for the materials to be used successfully in future. Gaps in literature reviews are also included in this paper.

The application of recycled aggregates (RA) from construction and demolition waste and crushed concrete blocks is a very important challenge for the coming years from the environmental point of view, in order to reduce the exploitation of natural resources. In Spain, the use of these recycled materials in the construction of road bases and sub-bases is growing significantly. However, presently, there are few studies focused on the properties and behavior of RA in civil works such as road sections or seaport platforms. In this work, two types of RA were studied and used in a complete real-scale application. Firstly, recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) were applied in the granular base layer under bituminous superficial layers, and secondly mixed recycled aggregates (MRA) which contain a mix of ceramic, asphalt, and concrete particles were applied in the granular subbase layer, under the base layer made with RCA. Both RA were applied in a port loading platform in Huelva, applying a 100% recycling rate. This civil engineering work complied with the technical requirements of the current Spanish legislation required for the use of conventional aggregates. The environmental benefits of this work have been very relevant, and it should encourage the application of MRA and RCA in civil engineering works such as port platforms in a much more extended way. This is the first and documented real-scale application of RA to completely build the base and sub-base of a platform in the Huelva Port, Spain, replacing 100% of natural aggregates with recycled ones.

abstract: Concern with the maintenance of natural resources has increased research about recycled aggregates for concrete production. However, the heterogeneity of recycled aggregates is one of the main constraints for their use in practice, because it can generate variability in concrete properties, hence reducing their final quality. Then, the jigging has been seen as a promising way of improving recycled aggregate quality. This paper aimed to evaluate its use for better application in concrete. A modified jig was used to sort recycled coarse aggregates. Concrete were produced with water/cement ratio from 0.5 and 100% of recycled coarse aggregate. The recycled aggregate properties upgrade were achieved and the results of compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of recycled concrete made with aggregate which were submitted to jigging were increased, indicating a potential application in wide scale.

Concrete made with large-size recycled aggregates is a new kind of recycled concrete, where the size of the recycled aggregate used is 25–80 mm, which is generally three times that of conventional aggregate. Thus, its composition and mechanical properties are different from that of conventional recycled concrete and can be applied in large-volume structures. In this study, recycled aggregate generated in two stages with randomly distributed gravels and mortar was used to replace the conventional recycled aggregate model, to observe the internal stress state and cracking of the large-size recycled aggregate. This paper also investigated the mechanical properties, such as the compressive strength, crack morphology, and stress–strain curve, of concrete with large-size recycled aggregates under different confining pressures and recycled aggregate incorporation ratios. Through this research, it was found that when compared with conventional concrete, under the confining pressure, the strength of large-size recycled aggregate concrete did not decrease significantly at the same stress state, moreover, the stiffness was increased. Confining pressure has a significant influence on the strength of large-size recycled aggregate cocrete.

The search for environmental preservation and conservation of natural resources gives rise to new concepts and viable technical solutions on the path to sustainable development. In this context, this study’s main objective is to analyse the influence of recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) on the development of pervious concrete, whose use as a floor covering represents an excellent device to mitigate the urban soil sealing phenomena. For this, mechanical and hydraulic tests were carried out, in addition to microstructural analyses and the assessment of its environmental performance. The results obtained were compared to reference studies also involving the incorporation of recycled aggregates. A pilot-scale case study was conducted, involving a parking space lined with pervious concrete moulded “in situ”. In laboratory tests, permeability coefficients and mechanical strengths compatible with the literature and above the normative limit for light traffic were found. The case study demonstrated higher permeability than in the laboratory, but the flexural strength was lower, being indicated only for pedestrian traffic. The environmental assessment showed that the RCA represents a positive contribution to the environmental performance of pervious concrete. Still, attention should be given to the recycled aggregate transport distance between the concrete plant and the RCA treatment plant.

In this study, the recycled concrete aggregates and powder (RCA and RCP) prepared from basaltic concrete waste were used to replace the natural aggregate (NA) and cement, respectively. The NA (coarse and fine) was replaced by the recycled aggregates with five percentages (0%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%). Consequently, the cement was replaced by the RCP with four percentages (0%, 5%, 10% and 20%). Cubes with 100 mm edge length were prepared for all tests. The compressive and tensile strengths (fcu and ftu) and water absorption (WA) were investigated for all mixes at different ages. Partial substitution of NA with recycled aggregate reduced the compressive strength with different percentages depending on the type and source of recycled aggregate. After 28 days, the maximum reduction in fcu value was 9.8% and 9.4% for mixtures with coarse RCA and fine RCA (FRCA), respectively. After 56 days, the mixes with 40% FRCA reached almost the same fcu value as the control mix (M0, 99.5%). Consequently, the compressive strengths of the mixes with 10% RCA at 28 and 56 days were 99.3 and 95.2%, respectively, compared to those of M0. The mixes integrated FRCA and RCP showed higher tensile strengths than the M0 at 56 d with a very small reduction at 28 d (max = 3.4%). Moreover, the fcu and ftu values increased for the late test ages, while the WA decreased.

Every year, there is a considerable increase in the exploitation of deposits to supply the market for aggregates. On the other hand, so does the production of solid waste from construction and demolition waste (CDW). In 2010 Brazil approved the PNRS (National Policy on Solid Waste), which sets out how the country should have their waste, encouraging recycling and sustainability. As an alternative to the above problem, this paper aims to investigate the feasibility of partial and total replacement of the asphalt concrete aggregates by recycled aggregates from CDW in order to reduce the environmental impacts caused by the operation of quarries and give an adequate final destination the residue produced by man in construction. Were carried out five (05) projects mixture of: the first (parameter of our research) used only natural aggregates (0% CDW) in the second, third and fourth replaced 25%, 50% and 75% respectively of natural aggregate by the recycled aggregate and the fifth and last, used only recycled aggregates (100% CDW). They carried out the characterization of the aggregates by means of physico-chemical and mechanical, analyzing them with reference based on specific standards paving. For mixtures, they calculated the volumetric parameters and performed mechanical tests of tensile strength and stability. The results indicate that the recycled aggregate, in a defined proportion, can replace the natural aggregate in the flexible pavements

Abstract This paper reports on the first phase of a multi-phase research program conducted at the American University of Beirut (AUB) on “Hemp and Recycled Aggregates Concrete” (HRAC). HRAC is a new sustainable concrete material where hemp fibers are incorporated in the mix, the coarse aggregate content is reduced by 20% of the concrete volume, and 50% of the natural coarse aggregates (NCA) are replaced by recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), thus saving on natural resources and addressing the problem of waste material disposal. The effect of the new material on concrete consistency and hardened mechanical properties was studied. Also, few durability tests were conducted. Variables included percentage replacement of NCA by RCA (0 or 50%), maximum size aggregate (10 or 20 mm), hemp fiber length (20 or 30 mm), and hemp fiber treatment (alkali or silane or acetyl). Fiber characterization tests were conducted including morphology, crystallinity, and thermal analysis. The tests indicated that alkali and acetyl fiber treatments were better than the silane treatment in removing impurities on the fiber surface. Also, alkali and acetyl treatments have increased the crystallinity of the fibers while silane treatment decreased it. Results of mechanical properties tests showed that while HRAC has considerable lower compressive strength and modulus of elasticity than plain concrete, the flexural strength and splitting tensile strength are not significantly affected. The flexural stress–strain behavior of HRAC is ductile as compared to the brittle behavior of the plain concrete beams indicating positive impact on toughness and energy dissipation. The durability tests indicated that whereas HRAC mixes have higher absorption than plain concrete, they have better thermal properties and their resistance to freeze–thaw cycles is comparable to plain concrete. All test results were not significantly affected by fiber length or fiber treatment.

Compressive strengths of recycled aggregate concrete(RAC) with different recycled aggregates(RA) replacement ratios at 7d, 28d, 60d ages are investigated respectively. Failure process and failure mode of RAC are analyzed, influences on compressive strength with same mix ratio and different RA replacement ratios are analyzed, and the reason is investigated in this paper. The experimental results indicate that compressive strength of recycled concrete at 28d age can reach the standard generally, it is feasible to mix concrete with recycled aggregates, compressive strength with 50% replacement ratio is relatively high.
