No one can avoid feeling frustrated, and contemporary schools should take the lead in supporting mental health. A sustainable approach to such education can be found in Zhuangzi (ca 369–ca 286 BCE), a representative of Taoist schools who is credited with writing the Zhuangzi, a philosophical and literary text. The first section of this study uses qualitative research methods to identify 70 concepts regarding self-adaptation in the Zhuangzi and classifies them into 11 categories. The individual sentences from which these concepts originated are then logically reordered by category to create texts that aid a reader’s understanding of Zhuangzi’s philosophy. The second section of this study uses purposive sampling through an online questionnaire to consider university student feedback on self-adaptation philosophy. Overall, 84.12% of students agreed or strongly agreed that self-adaptation could help them deal with frustration, and 40.80% of students identified the category “mental state” as the most helpful. Furthermore, 88.91% of students reported that thinking about their mental state was most helpful in interpersonal relationship situations. Thus, self-adaptation offers individuals a sustainable, healthy means of dealing with life’s challenges. The findings of this study may have far-reaching impacts on European and American society by cultivating the general public’s interest in Zhuangzi’s philosophy.

Objectives: The current study investigated mental health literacy in an Australian sample to examine the influence sex has in the identification of and attitudes towards various aspects of mental illness. Method: An online questionnaire was completed by 373 participants (267 female, M = 34.87). Participants were randomly assigned a vignette depicting an individual exhibiting the symptoms of one of three types of mental illness and asked to answer questions relating to aspects of mental health literacy. Results: Males exhibited poorer mental health literacy skills compared to females. Males were less likely to correctly identify the type of mental illness, more likely to rate symptoms as less serious and to perceive the individual as having greater personal control over such symptoms. Conclusion: Generally, the sample was relatively proficient at correctly identifying mental illness but overall males displayed poorer mental health literacy skills than females.

Abstract. In an online questionnaire filled out by 217 employees of various organizations, we investigated the implication of belief in a just world (BJW) for work-related cognitions and behavior (e.g., emotional exhaustion), taking central work stressors (e.g., workload), as well as work stress-related resources (e.g., autonomy), into account. We argued that BJW might compensate for the negative effects of the aforementioned stressors on work-related cognitions and behavior. BJW serves adaptive psychological functions such as the following: (1) It helps the individual to interpret the events in his or her life in a meaningful way and, thus, to deal with unjust experiences. In light of this function, we hypothesized that employees with a strong BJW would experience more organizational commitment and report fewer turnover intentions, and that the influence of BJW in these areas exists over and above the influence of central stressors and work stress-related resources. A further adaptive function of BJW is that it (2) provides the individual with trust in his or her own efficacy, as well as in the social environment. Thus, we assumed that those high in BJW would estimate that they perform better in their job and show less sick presence. As a consequence of these two functions, (3) BJW fosters mental health. With respect to mental health, we expected high believers to report less emotional exhaustion and fewer symptoms of depersonalization. Results of hierarchical regression analyses confirmed our hypotheses. We argue, therefore, that BJW should be seen as a psychological resource compensating for stress in the workplace.

Psychiatric practice routinely uses semistructured and/or unstructured free text to record the behavior and mental state of patients. Many of these data are unstructured, lack standardization, and are difficult to use for analysis. Thus, it is difficult to quantitatively analyze a patient’s illness trajectory over time and his or her responsiveness to treatment, and it is also difficult to compare different patients quantitatively. In this article, experts in the field of psychiatry, along with machine learning models, have collaboratively transformed patient data available in status assessments generated by physicians into binary vector representations. Data from patients with mental health disorders collected within a real-world clinical setting from one of the largest behavioral electronic health record (EHR) systems in the United States have been used for generating these representations. The binary vector representation of these health records is shown to be useful in various clinical tasks, such as disease phenotyping, characterizing the suicidality of patients, and inferring diagnoses. To summarize, this approach can transform semistructured free-text summaries of patients’ status assessments into a structured, quantifiable format, which enriches the data that reside within EHR systems. This allows for effective intra- and interpatient quantifications and comparisons, which are much needed in the field of mental health. With the aid of these binary representations, patients’ mental states can be systematically tracked over time, as can their responses to medications at the individual and population levels.

Abstract. Background: The ability to predict imminent risk of suicide is limited, particularly among mental health clients. Root cause analysis (RCA) can be used by health services to identify service-wide approaches to suicide prevention. Aims: To (a) develop a standardized taxonomy for RCAs; (b) to quantitate service-related factors associated with suicides; and (c) to identify service-related suicide prevention strategies. Method: The RCAs of all people who died by suicide within 1 week of contact with the mental health service over 5 years were thematically analyzed using a data collection tool. Results: Data were derived from RCAs of all 64 people who died by suicide between 2008 and 2012. Major themes were categorized as individual, situational, and care-related factors. The most common factor was that clients had recently denied suicidality. Reliance on carers, recent changes in medication, communication problems, and problems in follow-through were also commonly identified. Conclusion: Given the difficulty in predicting suicide in people whose expressions of suicidal ideation change so rapidly, services may consider the use of strategies aimed at improving the individual, stressor, support, and care factors identified in this study.

This is a personal and reflective piece written from a clinician's point of view on the influence that the developing awareness around the consequences of childhood adversity has had upon the discussions, thinking and practice across the areas in which they are working. It seeks to argue that the increased understanding and recognition of the potential impact of early adversity can not only enhance and deepen the understanding of an individual's difficulties, but can serve to inform how services respond in a way that takes account of this. It suggests that the research and literature on childhood adversity can offer a route map away from a model of mental health that focuses predominantly on the individual as the sole source of interest.

In Hong Kong, social distancing has been adopted in order to minimise the spread of COVID-19. This study aims to examine the changes in physical health, mental health, and social well-being experienced by local residents who were homebound during the pandemic. An online questionnaire in both Chinese and English versions was completed by 590 eligible participants from 24 April to 13 May 2020. The questionnaire found that individuals aged 18 to 25 years spent more time resting and relaxing but experienced more physical strain. Working status was associated with social contact, with participants working full-time jobs scoring higher in “maintaining social communication via electronic means” and “avoiding social activities outside the home”. Additionally, approximately one third of the participants (29.7%) had moderate to severe depression, and participants aged 18 to 25 were found to have higher scores in PHQ-9. Changes in physical health and social contact were significantly associated with developing depressive symptoms. From the results, it is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to exert a negative impact on the mental health status of individuals.
