Long slender piezoresistive silicon microprobes are a new type of sensor for measurement of surface roughness. Their advantage is the ability to measure at speeds of up to 15 mm/s, which is much faster than conventional stylus probes. The drawbacks are their small measurement range and tendency to break easily when deflected by more than the allowed range of 1 mm. In this article, previously developed microprobes were tested in the laboratory to evaluate their metrological properties, then tested under industrial conditions. There are several industrial measurement applications in which microprobes are useful. Measurement of the roughness of paper machine rolls was selected for testing in this study. The integration of a microprobe into an existing roll measurement device is presented together with the measurement results. The results are promising, indicating that measurements using a microprobe can give useful data on the grinding process.

This paper focuses on the influence of various types of abrasive grains on cutting properties during the grinding process for bearing steel. In this experiment, not only conventional super-hard abrasive materials but also a new type of abrasive material were employed in grinding wheels. The measurement results were compared, and an evaluation was made of the cutting properties of the new abrasive material. The options were then evaluated for their practical applicability. The measurement results indicated that a grinding wheel with Abral and SG grains is the most suitable for grinding hardened bearing steel in order to achieve the best roughness and geometrical accuracy.

The purpose of this study is to develop an in-process of measurement technique of surface roughness using thermoelectric effect in cylindrical grinding. The electromotive force (EMF) generates depend on the surface roughness of workpiece and the variation of workpiece temperature when the sensor with thermocouple wires rubs on the workpiece surface in grinding process. In this paper, the in-process measurement technique of surface roughness in cylindrical plunge grinding is proposed, conceiving the cancellation of the EMF caused by the variation of workpiece temperature in the sensor output. Also a new type in-process sensor was developed for high accuracy to overcome the problem which was clarified in the cancellation method of the influence of workpiece temperature at a basic sensor.

The State special primary acceleration measurement standard for gravimetry (GET 190-2019), its composition, principle of operation and basic metrological characteristics are presented. This standard is on the upper level of reference for free-fall acceleration measurements. Its accuracy and reliability were improved as a result of optimisation of the adjustment procedures for measurement systems and its integration within the upgraded systems, units and modern hardware components. A special attention was given to adjusting the corrections applied to measurement results with respect to procedural, physical and technical limitations. The used investigation methods made it possibled to confirm the measurement range of GET 190-2019 and to determine the contributions of main sources of errors and the total value of these errors. The measurement characteristics and GET 90-2019 were confirmed by the results obtained from measurements of the absolute value of the free fall acceleration at the gravimetrical site “Lomonosov-1” and by their collation with the data of different dates obtained from measurements by high-precision foreign and domestic gravimeters. Topicality of such measurements ensues from the requirements to handle the applied problems that need data on parameters of the Earth gravitational field, to be adequately faced. Geophysics and navigation are the main fields of application for high-precision measurements in this field.

Passive grinding is a new rail grinding strategy. In this work, the influence of grinding pressure on the removal behaviors of rail material in passive grinding was investigated by using a self-designed passive grinding simulator. Meanwhile, the surface morphology of the rail and grinding wheel were observed, and the grinding force and temperature were measured during the experiment. Results show that the increase of grinding pressure leads to the rise of rail removal rate, i.e., grinding efficiency, surface roughness, residual stress, grinding force and grinding temperature. Inversely, the enhancement of grinding pressure and grinding force will reduce the grinding ratio, which indicates that service life of grinding wheel decreases. The debris presents dissimilar morphology under different grinding pressure, which reflects the distinction in grinding process. Therefore, for rail passive grinding, the appropriate grinding pressure should be selected to balance the grinding quality and the use of grinding wheel.

The shaping process of surface texture is complicated and depends on many factors and phenomena accompanying them. This article presents the author’s test stand for the measurement of relative displacements in a tool–workpiece system during longitudinal turning. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of edge radius on the relative displacement between the tool and workpiece. The cutting process was carried out with inserts with different edge radii for X37CrMoV5-1 steel. As a result of the research, vibration charts of the tool–workpiece system were obtained. In the range of feed 0.03–0.18 mm/rev, the values of the standard deviation of relative displacements in the x-axis were obtained in the range of 0.36–0.78 μm for the insert with an edge radius of rn = 48.8 μm. As a result of the work, it was determined that for the feed value of 0.12 mm/rev for all inserts, the relative displacements are the smallest. As the final effect, the formula for forecasting the Ra roughness parameter was presented.

This study describes a novel process to drill small holes in brittle materials such as glass, silicon and ceramic using a self-elastic polycrystalline diamond (PCD) drilling tool. In order to improve the surface roughness and reduce crack of the small holes, a new type of self-elastic PCD drilling tool equipped with vibration absorbing materials inside the housing was developed to fabricate small holes in glass in this study. The self-elastic PCD drilling tools could absorb the mechanical force by the vibration absorbing materials while the PCD tool penetrates into the small holes. Compared to conventional PCD drilling tools, the experimental results show that high-quality small holes drilled in glass can be achieved with cracking as small as 0.02mm on the outlet surface using the self-elastic PCD drilling tool.

Abstract Cylinder bore honing is a finishing process that generates a crosshatch pattern with alternate valleys and plateaus responsible for enhancing lubrication and preventing gas and oil leakage in the engine cylinder bore. The required functional surface in the cylinder bore is generated by a sequential honing process and is characterized by Rk roughness parameters (Rk, Rvk, Rpk, Mr1, Mr2). Predicting the desired surface roughness relies primarily on two techniques: (i) analytical models (AM) and (ii) machine learning (ML) models. Both of these techniques offer certain advantages and limitations. AM's are interpretable as they indicate distinct mapping relation between input variables and honed surface texture. However, AM's are usually based on simplified assumptions to ensure the traceability of multiple variables. Consequently, their prediction accuracy is adversely impacted when these assumptions are not satisfied. However, ML models accurately predict the surface texture but their prediction mechanism is challenging to interpret. Furthermore, the ML models' performance relies heavily on the representativeness of data employed in developing them. Thus, either prediction accuracy or model interpretability suffers when AM and ML models are implemented independently. This study proposes a hybrid model framework to incorporate the benefits of AM and ML simultaneously. In the hybrid model, an Artificial neural network (ANN) compensates the AM by correcting its error. This retains the physical understanding built into the model while simultaneously enhancing the prediction accuracy. The proposed approach resulted in a hybrid model that significantly improved the prediction accuracy of the AM and additionally provided superior performance compared to independent ANN.

Currently the measurement of surface texture in mechanical engineering is traditionally carried out using profilometers. Modern profilometers do not allow measuring of surfaces with complex shapes. This is due to the different sensitivity of the sensor and the discreteness of the movements along the axes of the Cartesian coordinate system. Coordinate Measuring Machines are devoid of such a drawback. However, stylus of the coordinate measuring machine has a diameter many times larger than the diamond stylus of the profilometer. Therefore, there is a mechanical filtering effect, that affects the results of measuring the parameters of the surface texture. In this paper a mathematical model of the contact of the spherical stylus and a rough surface based on analytical geometry is proposed. Influence of the diameter of the spherical stylus on the maximum measurement errors of a amplitude parameters are investigated. Seven amplitude parameters Rp, Rv, Rz, Ra, Rq, Rsk, Rku of the surface texture are modeled. Coordinate measuring machine and profilometer with stylus diameter of 2 μm measurement results are compared. it was concluded that the stylus diameter of the coordinate measuring machine when measuring the surface texture should be no more than 20 μm.

This work presents an experiment research on Acoustic emission (AE) signal and the surface roughness of cylindrical plunge grinding with the different infeed time. The changed infeed time of grinding process is researched as an important parameter to compare AE signals and surface roughnesses with the different infeed time in the grinding process. The experiment results show the AE signal is increased by the increased feed rate. In the infeed period of the grinding process, the surface roughness is increased at first, and then is decreased.

The purpose of this research is to develop the models to predict the average surface roughness and the surface roughness during the in-process grinding by monitoring the cutting force ratio. The proposed models are developed based on the experimentally obtained results by employing the exponential function with four factors, which are the spindle speed, the feed rate, the depth of cut, and the cutting force ratio. The experimentally obtained results showed that the dimensionless cutting force ratio is usable to predict the surface roughness during the grinding process, which can be calculated and obtained by taking the ratio of the corresponding time records of the cutting force Fy in the spindle speed direction to that of the cutting force Fz in the radial wheel direction. The multiple regression analysis is utilized to calculate the regression coefficients with the use of the least square method at 95% confident level. The experimentally obtained models have been verified by the new cutting tests. It is proved that the developed surface roughness models can be used to predict the in-process surface roughness with the high accuracy of 93.9% for the average surface roughness and 92.8% for the surface roughness.
