Beauveria and Metarhizium fungi are facultative plant endophytes that provide plant growth-stimulating, immunomodulatory, and other beneficial effects. However, little is known about the level of plant colonization by these fungi under natural conditions. We assessed the endophytic colonization of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) with entomopathogenic fungi at their natural load in soils (102–104 colony-forming units per g). Microbiological analyses of soils and plant organs, as well as a metagenomic analysis of potato roots and leaves, were conducted in three locations in Western Siberia, consisting of conventional agrosystems and kitchen gardens. The fungi were isolated at a relatively high frequency from unsterilized roots (up to 53% of Metarhizium-positive plants). However, the fungi were sparsely isolated from the internal tissues of roots, stems, and leaves (3%). Among the genus Metarhizium, two species, M. robertsii and M. brunneum, were detected in plants as well as in soils, and the first species was predominant. A metagenomic analysis of internal potato tissues showed a low relative abundance of Beauveria and Metarhizium (<0.3%), and the communities were represented primarily by phytopathogens. We suggest that colonization of the internal tissues of potatoes occurs sporadically under a natural load of entomopathogenic fungi in soils. The lack of stable colonization of potato plants with Beauveria and Metarhizium may be due to competition with phytopathogens.

A field study were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana as abiocontrol agent for the cotton leaf worm Spodoptera littoralis infesting potato plants. Results indicated that soil treatment of the entomopathogenic fungi significantly reduced the percentage of plant infestation to 64.3, 60.7 % after 14, 21 days. Results of the infection intensity also significantly reduced in treatment of entomopathogenic fungi in soil to 18.7, 9.9 pore/leaf after 14, 21 days of treatment.The results revealed the higher efficiency of entomopathogenic fungi on plant yield, it become 633.3 gm in entomopathogenic fungi in soil treatment.

Abstract Background Deep breathing (DB) and handgrip (HG) exercise -with and without circulatory occlusion (OC) in muscle-, have been shown to have beneficial effects on cardiovascular function; however, the combination of these maneuvers on heart rate (HR) and cardiac sympathovagal balance have not been previously investigated. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of simultaneous DB, HG, and OC maneuvers on the sympathovagal balance in healthy women and men subjects. Methods and results Electrocardiogram and ventilation were measured in 20 healthy subjects (Women: n = 10; age = 27 ± 4 years; weight = 67.1 ± 8.4 kg; and height = 1.6 ± 0.1 m. Men: n = 10; age = 27 ± 3 years; weight = 77.5 ± 10.1 kg; and height = 1.7 ± 0.1 m) at baseline and during DB, DB + HG, or DB + HG + OC protocols. Heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate were continuously recorded, and spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) were calculated to indirectly estimate cardiac autonomic function. Men and women showed similar HR responses to DB, DB + HG and DB + HG + OC. Men exhibited a significant HR decrease following DB + HG + OC protocol which was accompanied by an improvement in cardiac autonomic control evidenced by spectral changes in HRV towards parasympathetic predominance (HRV High frequency: 83.95 ± 1.45 vs. 81.87 ± 1.50 n.u., DB + HG + OC vs. baseline; p < 0.05). In women, there was a marked decrease in HR after completion of both DB + HG and DB + HG + OC tests which was accompanied by a significant increase in cardiac vagal tone (HRV High frequency: 85.29 ± 1.19 vs. 77.93 ± 0.92 n.u., DB + HG vs. baseline; p < 0.05). No adverse effects or discomfort were reported by men or women during experimental procedures. Independent of sex, combination of DB, HG, and OC was tolerable and resulted in decreases in resting HR and elevations in cardiac parasympathetic tone. Conclusions These data indicate that combined DB, HG and OC are effective in altering cardiac sympathovagal balance and reducing resting HR in healthy men and women.

The frequency and intensity of Myzus persicae (Sulz.) resistance were studied using bioassays and biochemical tests in two potato crops in Ibicoara, Bahia. Both areas received several insecticide applications which failed to control M. persicae. By the end of the crop season, one of the areas received two applications of pirimicarb and the other was not sprayed. Six samples of 700 aphids each were randomly collected before and after the pirimicarb applications, with an interval of four days. Specimens of M. persicae were also collected from isolated potato plants. At the laboratory, the samples were characterized by the CL50 based on insecticide bioassays and by total esterase activity using colorimetric assays. After the pirimicarb applications, the susceptible (S), the moderate resistant (R1) and mixed S/R1populations presented decreasing resistance frequencies (from 36.6 to 9.9; 12,0 to 7.5 and 11.4 to 5.9%, respectively). On the other hand, high resistant individuals (R2), extremely resistant (R3), and mixed populations of R1/R2 had increasing frequencies (from 17.7 to 36.7%; 2.3 to 9.1%, and 20.0 to 30.8%, respectively). The survival of S individuals was probably due to their wandering behavior on the plants to avoid sprayed areas. All changes in frequency were reflected in the LC50 and in the resistance ratio (rr). In the pirimicarb untreated area, high frequencies of R2, R3 and R1/R2 were observed. High frequency and resistance intensity of M. persicae in areas under intensive insecticide applications can be related to the selection of resistant populations and due to the entrance of winged migrants from spontaneous plants, where the frequency of R2+R3 was 81.4%.

Introduction. Nikola Tesla (1856 - 1943) was a genius inventor and scientist, whose contribution to medicine is remarkable. Part I of this article reviewed special contributions of the world renowned scientist to the establishment of radiology as a new discipline in medicine. This paper deals with the use of Tesla currents in medicine. Tesla Currents in Medicine. Tesla?s greatest impact on medicine is his invention of a transformer (Tesla coil) for producing high frequency and high voltage currents (Tesla currents). Tesla currents are used in diathermy, as they, while passing through the body, transform electrical energy into a therapeutic heat. In 1891, Tesla passed currents through his own body and was the first to experience their beneficial effects. He kept correspondence on electrotherapy with J. Dugan and S. H. Monell. In 1896, he used high frequency currents and designed an ozone generator for producing ozone, with powerful antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Tesla is famous for his extensive experiments with mechanical vibrations and resonance, examining their effects on the organism and pioneering their use for medical purposes. Tesla also designed an oscillator to relieve fatigue of the leg muscles. It is less known that Tesla?s inventions (Tesla coil and wireless remote control) are widely used in modern medical equipment. Apart from this, wireless technology is nowadays widely applied in numerous diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Conclusion. Nikola Tesla was the last Renaissance figure of the modern era. Tesla bridged three centuries and two millennia by his inventions, and permanently indebted human-kind by his epochal discoveries.

Introduction. The sequence effect (SE) is a reason contributing to freezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. There is no effective treatment for the SE. The objective of the current study is to investigate the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on the SE in PD patients with FOG. Methods. 28 PD patients with FOG received either real or sham 10-Hz rTMS over the supplementary motor area (SMA). The effects of rTMS on the SE, FOG, and some gait parameters were evaluated. Results. rTMS did not improve the SE. Real rTMS had beneficial effects on FOG and some gait parameters, and this effect lasted for at least four weeks. Conclusions. High-frequency rTMS over the SMA cannot alleviate the SE in PD patients with FOG. rTMS has a long-lasting beneficial effect on FOG; however, this effect is not achieved by improving the SE but may be through improving some other gait parameters.

Abstract In Western Siberia and the Far North, complications caused by paraffin plugs in wells are not temporary. They are caused by ongoing factors, such as permafrost zones, a sharp temperature drop along the well, the high gas factor and water in the well products. The paper studies the possibility of using a high-frequency electromagnetic field to remove paraffin plugs inside the well. Mathematical modeling of the problem using a system of heat and mass transfer equations and boundary and initial conditions is described. The phase transition (melting of hydratoparaffin) is denoted by Stefan’s condition which is one of the boundary conditions. The problem does not have an analytical solution, so the numerical implementation of the solution is carried out. Graphs of dependences of melting limits on generator power, and distribution of temperature fields in wells are constructed.
