The functional hydrogel lens containing 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) was manufactured by thermal polymerization. The physical properties of the produced hydrogel lens were measured and analyzed. In this study, HEMA, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) were used for thermal copolymerization. Additionally, poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA), 3-(Triethoxysilyl) propyl isocyanate (TEPI), and cerium(Ⅳ) oxide nanoparticles were used as additives to make a functional hydrogel lens. The mixture was heated at 100 °C for 90 min to produce the hydrogel ophthalmic lens by the cast mold method. The resulting physical properties showed that the water content and refractive index of the sample were in the ranges of 38.06~42.11% and 1.426~1.436, respectively. The addition of cerium oxide nanoparticles lowered the contact angle and allowed the hydrogel lens to block UV light. The tensile strength was also improved by 52.13% through cerium oxide nanoparticles, and up to 123.4% by using TEPI. Based on the results of this study, the produced ophthalmic lens is suitable for durable, UV-blocking high-performance lenses.

Novel method for synthesis of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) and modified with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (MPEG), MPEG-PEI-SPIONs, was developed. PEI-SPIONs were successfully prepared in aqueous system via photochemistry, and their surface was modified with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (MPEG). The so-obtained MPEG-PEI-SPIONs had a uniform hydrodynamic particle size of 34 nm. The successful coating of MPEG-PEI on the SPIONs was ascertained from FT-IR analysis, and the PEI and MPEG fractions in MPEG-PEI-SPIONs were calculated to account for 31% and 12%, respectively. Magnetic measurement revealed that the saturated magnetization of MPEG-PEI-SPIONs reached 46 emu/g and the nanoparticles showed the characteristic of being superparamagnetic. The stability experiment revealed that the MPEG-PEI modification improved the nanoparticles stability greatly.T2 relaxation measurements showed that MPEG-PEI-SPIONs show similarR2 value to the PEI-SPIONs. TheT2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of MPEG-PEI-SPIONs showed that the magnetic resonance signal was enhanced significantly with increasing nanoparticle concentration in water. These results indicated that the MPEG-PEI-SPIONs had great potential for application in MRI.

The surface wettability of thermo-responsive random poly (ethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate-co-triethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate), abbreviated as P(MEOMA-co-MEO3MA), was investigated in thin film. UV-Vis spectroscopy shows that the LCST of P(MEOMA-co-MEO3MA) with molar ratios of 0:20, 6:14 and 9:11 were 43°C, 32 oC and 25 oC, respectively. LCST shifts towards lower temperature when molar ratio of MEOMA increases. ATR-FTIR indicates that P(MEOMA-co-MEO3MA) thin film experienced a collapse when the temperature passes its LCST. The contact angle of the paraffin oil on the film decreases 15o when the temperature is above its LCST, which confirms the surface wettability can be controlled. Atomic force microscopy shows the surface of the swollen thin film becomes rougher when above it LCST.
