The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of R290 flow boiling in a corrugated tube were investigated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in this study. We established a model of flow boiling in a corrugated tube with different corrugated structures (rectangular and circular corrugations) and validated the model using the Liu–Winterton and Xu–Fang empirical equations. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and pressure drop were obtained at a mass flow rate of 0.04–0.2 kg/s and a water inlet temperature of 310–330 K. The results show that the HTC and the drop in the pressure of the corrugated tubes both obviously increased compared with a smooth tube as the mass flow rate increased. The HTC decreased for the three tubes as the water inlet temperature increased, while the drop in pressure slightly increased for the three tubes. Moreover, the corrugated structure was found to significantly enhance the heat transfer; the heat transfer enhancement factor () of the corrugated tube with the rectangular corrugations and the corrugated tube with the circular corrugations was 2.01–2.36 and 1.67–1.98, respectively. The efficiency index () for both the rectangular corrugated pipe and the circular corrugated pipe was greater than 1 (1.05–1.24 and 1.13–1.29, respectively). The application of corrugated tubes with round and rectangular corrugations can reduce the heat transfer area required for the exchange of heat and, thus, reduce the cost.

In the rainy season, in tropical countries, to dry stuffs is difficult. Using electrical power or fossil energy is an expensive way. Therefore, it is wise to utilize heat waste. A device that can be used for this purpose is called radiator. The effect of mass flow rate on pressure drop and heat transfer for a dryer room radiator have been experimentally investigated. The room model size was 1000 mm x 1000 mm x 1000 mm made of plywood and the overall radiator dimension was 360 mm x 220 mm x 50 mm made of copper pipes with aluminium fins. Three mass flow rates were investigated namely 12.5 g/s, 14 g/s and 16.5 g/s. The water temperature at the entrance was increased gradually and then kept at 80°C. The maximum temperature reached in the dryer room was 50°C which was at the point just above the radiator. The effect of the mass flow rate on the room temperature was insignificant, while the effect on the pressure drop was significant. Moreover, the pressure drop decreased as the inlet temperature increased. In general, the radiator is recommended to be used as the heat source in a dryer room.

Plate-fin heat exchangers provide a broad range of applications in many cryogenic industries for liquefaction and separation of gasses because of their excellent technical advantages such as high effectiveness, compact size, etc. Correlations are available for the design of a plate-fin heat exchanger, but experimental investigations are few at cryogenic temperature. In the present study, a cryogenic heat exchanger test setup has been designed and fabricated to investigate the performance of plate-fin heat exchanger at cryogenic temperature. Major parameters (Colburn factor, Friction factor, etc.) that affect the performance of plate-fin heat exchangers are provided concisely. The effect of mass flow rate and inlet temperature on the effectiveness and pressure drop of the heat exchanger are investigated. It is observed that with an increase in mass flow rate effectiveness and pressure drop increases. The present setup emphasis the systematic procedure to perform the experiment based on cryogenic operating conditions and represent its uncertainties level.

In this paper the results of experimental investigations are presented that were performed at the institute’s turbo charger test stand to determine the heat flux between the turbine and the compressor of a passenger car turbo charger. A parametric study has been performed varying the turbine inlet temperature and the mass flow rate. The aim of the analysis is to provide a relation of the Reynolds number at the compressor inlet and the heat flux from the turbine to the compressor with the turbine inlet temperature as the parameter. Thereto, the analysis of the local heat fluxes is necessary which is performed in a numerical conjugate heat transfer and flow analysis which is presented in part I of the paper. Beyond the measurements necessary to determine the operating point of compressor and turbine, the surface temperature of the casings were measured by resistance thermometers at different positions and by thermography. All measurement results were used as boundary conditions for the numerical simulation, i.e. the inlet and outlet flow conditions for compressor and turbine, the rotational speed, the oil temperatures and the temperature distribution on the outer casing surface of the turbo charger. The experimental results show that the total heat flux from turbine to compressor is mainly influenced by the turbine inlet temperature. The increase of the mass flow rate leads to a higher pressure ratio in the compressor so that the compressor casing temperature is increased. Due to the turbo charger’s geometry heat radiation has a small influence on the total heat flux.

The study was done both numerically and experimentally on the heat transfer behaviors of a microchannel heat sink. The solver of numerical simulations (CFD - ACE+software package) was developed by using the finite volume method. This numerical method was performed to simulate for an overall microchannel heat sink, including the channels, substrate, manifolds of channels as well as the covered top wall. Numerical results associated with such kinds of overall microchannel heat sinks are rarely seen in the literatures. For cases done in this study, a heat flux of 9.6 W/cm2was achieved for the microchannel heat sink having the inlet temperature of 25 °C and mass flow rate of 0.4 g/s with the uniform surface temperature of bottom wall of the substrate of 50 °C; besides, the maximum heat transfer effectiveness of this device reached 94.4%. Moreover, in this study, when the mass flow rate increases, the outlet temperature decreases; however, as the mass flow rate increases, the heat flux of this heat sink increases also. In addition, the results obtained from the numerical analyses were in good agreement with those obtained from the experiments as well as those from the literatures, with the maximum discrepancies of the heat fluxes estimated to be less than 6 %.

Abstract Microchannel heat sink is an effective method in compact and faster heat transfer applications. This paper numerically investigates thermal and hydraulic characteristics of a porous microchannel heat sink (PMHS) using various nanofluids. The effect of porosity, inlet velocity and nanoparticle concentration on thermal-hydraulic performance is systematically examined. The result shows a significant temperature increase (40°C) of the coolant in the porous zone. The pressure drop reduces by 35% for γ = 0.32 compared to the non-porous counterpart, and this reduction of pressure significantly continues when γ further increases. The pressure drop with win is linear for PMHS with nanofluids, and the change in pressure drop is steeper for nanofluids compared to their base fluids. The average heat transfer coefficients increases about 2.5 times for PMHS, and a further increase of 6% in is predicted with the addition of nanoparticle. The average Nusselt number increases non-linearly with Re for PMHS. The friction factor reduces by 50% when γ increases from 0.32 to 0.60, and the effect of nanofluid on friction factor is insignificant beyond the mass flow rate of 0.0004 kg/s. Whilst Cu and CuO nanoparticles help to dissipate the larger amount of heat from the microchannel, Al2O3 nanoparticle appears to have a detrimental effect on heat transfer. The thermal-hydraulic performance factor strongly depends on the nanoparticles, and it slightly decreases with the mass flow rate. The increase of nanoparticle concentration, in general, enhances both h and ΔP linearly for the range considered.

The vertical sinter cooling bed (VSCB) is a high-efficiency energy-saving and environmentally friendly waste heat recovery equipment. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) convection model was established to reveal the typical factors on the thermodynamic performance in VSCB. Indeed, a multiple performance optimal algorithm based on the Taguchi-grey relational analysis (GRA) method was first applied to investigate the effects of geometric and operational factors, including the diameter of the bed, height of the bed, air mass flow rate, air inlet temperature, and sinter mass flow rate, on improving the heat transfer (Ex) and hydrodynamic performance (Pdrop) and obtain the optimum combination of each factor in VSCB. The results found that the diameter of the bed was the most influential factor contributing the multiple types of performance with a contribution rate of 70.51%, followed by the air mass flow rate (15.84%), while the height of the bed (0.27%) exerted a limited effect on the performance of multiple processes. The optimal combination of factors (A1B5C5D5E1) was compared with the initially selected parameters by performing a confirmation test. The performances of heat transfer and hydrodynamics were improved by the Taguchi with the GRA method.

A one-dimensional steady state model was developed to predict the heat transfer performance of a shell (liquid)-and-tube (gas) heat exchanger used as a cooling device for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) application where there is a significant temperature drop across the device. The predictions of the model results were compared with experimental measurements and the trends were found to be in good agreement for most of the transitional and turbulent regimes. The results showed that the exit gas temperature increases with increasing gas mass flow rate at fixed gas inlet temperature and coolant flow rate. It was also found that the exit gas temperature was essentially independent of the coolant flow rate for the typical operating range but did depend on the coolant inlet temperature. It was observed that the pressure drop across the cooling device was not a strong function of the gas inlet temperature. The heat-transfer effectiveness of the cooling device was found to slightly depend on the gas mass flow rate and inlet gas temperature. A preliminary analysis showed that fouling in the EGR cooling device can have a significant effect on both the thermal and hydraulic performance of the cooling device.

The main objective of this work is to compare different configurations of helical baffles in the cold fluid side of a double tube heat exchanger. For this analysis double pipe heat exchangers are divided into three different domains such as two fluid domains hot fluid in the inner tube and cold fluid in the outer pipe and a solid domain as helical baffles on inner tube of hot fluid. The hot water flows inside the heat exchanger tube, while the cold fluid flows in the outer side in the direction of counter flow. Mass flow rate cold fluid was varied from 0.1 kg/s to 0.3 kg/s while the flow rate in the inner tube i.e. hot water was kept constant at 0.1 kg/s. the inlet temperature of hot fluid taken as 40oC while Cold fluid inlet temperature taken as 15oC. The fluent software is used to calculate the fluid flow and heat transfer in the computational domains. The governing equations are iteratively solved by the finite volume formulation with the SIMPLE algorithm. Results show that that the maximum temperature drop of 10.9 oC for hot fluid and the maximum temperature rise of 11.9 oC for cold fluid are observed at 0.3 kg/sec mass flow rate for double pipe heat exchanger with double helical baffles. It has been also observed that the heat transfer coefficient increasing with the increasing in the mass flow rate of cold fluid. The overall heat transfer coefficients differ significantly by 20.4 % at same mass flow rate, because the considerable difference between heat transfer surface area on the inner and outer side of the tube resulting in a prominent thermal enhancement of the cold fluid.

In this numerical study, the heat transfer performance of shell-and-tube heat exchangers (STHXs) has been compared for two different tube arrangements. STHX having 21 and 24 tubes arranged in the inline and staggered grid has been considered for heat transfer analysis. Shell-and-tube heat exchanger with staggered grid arrangement has been observed to provide lesser thermal stratification as compared to the inline arrangement. Further, the study of variation in the mass flow rate of shell-side fluid having constant tube-side flow rate has been conducted for staggered grid structure STHX. The mass flow rate for the shell side has been varied from 0.1 kg/s to 0.5 kg/s, respectively, keeping the tube-side mass flow rate as constant at 0.25 kg/s. The influence of bulk mass-influx transfer rate on heat transfer efficiency, effectiveness, and pressure drop of shell-tube heat exchangers has been analyzed. CFD results were compared with analytical solutions, and it shows a good agreement between them. It has been observed that pressure drop is minimum for the flow rate of 0.1 kg/s, and outlet temperatures at the shell side and tube side have been predicted to be 40.94°C and 63.63°C, respectively.
