Interspecific hybridization in Tecoma Juss. was conducted to develop novel forms for the nursery industry. We report fertile hybrids from the cross T. garrocha Hieron. (pistillate parent) × T. stans (L.) Juss. ex Kunth. Leaf morphology of the F1 hybrids of T. garrocha × T. stans was intermediate between the parents. GISH also confirmed hybridity. The F1 hybrids were successfully backcrossed to both parents and self-pollinated to produce BC and F2 progeny. Tecoma garrocha , T. stans, and T. guarume A. DC. ‘Tangelo’ were self-fertile. The F1 hybrids also were crossed with T. capensis (Thunb.) Lindl. and T. guarume ‘Tangelo’, resulting in three-species hybrids. FISH conducted on F1 hybrids identified four copies of the 18S internal transcribed spacer region. Further analysis using FISH has the potential to provide information on the evolution of Bignoniaceae and the potential role of polyploidy.

Abstract We propose using ion chromatography to determine tartrate concentration in urine. A 100-microL sample of urine is diluted and injected into the chromatograph. Tartrate is eluted within 11.5 min as a distinct and well-resolved peak. The sensitivity of the standard procedure (signal-to-noise ratio, 3/1) is 30 mumol/L. The intra-run and interrun coefficients of variation are 2.5% and 4.1%, respectively. Mean analytical recovery of known amounts of added tartrate ranges between 94.2% and 104.0%. We investigated the specificity of the procedure by analyzing urine containing added dicarboxylic acids structurally related to tartrate. The reliability of the procedure makes it suitable for investigating tartrate metabolism, e.g., the potential role of tartrate as an inhibitor of crystallization in calcium nephrolithiasis.

Annexins belong to a family of multi-functional membrane- and Ca(2+)-binding proteins. The characteristic feature of these proteins is that they can bind membrane phospholipids in a reversible, Ca(2+)-dependent manner. While animal annexins have been known for a long time and are fairly well characterized, their plant counterparts were discovered only in 1989, in tomato, and have not been thoroughly studied yet. In the present review, we discuss the available information about plant annexins with special emphasis on biochemical and functional properties of some of them. In addition, we propose a link between annexins and symbiosis and Nod factor signal transduction in the legume plant, Medicago truncatula. A specific calcium response, calcium spiking, is an essential component of the Nod factor signal transduction pathway in legume plants. The potential role of annexins in the generation and propagation of this calcium signal is considered in this review. M. truncatula annexin 1 (MtAnn1) is a typical member of the plant annexin family, structurally similar to other members of the family. Expression of the MtAnn1 gene is specifically induced during symbiotic associations with both Sinorhizobium meliloti and the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices. Furthermore, it has been reported that the MtAnn1 protein is preferentially localized at the nuclear periphery of rhizobial-activated cortical cells, suggesting a possible role of this annexin in the calcium response signal elicited by symbiotic signals from rhizobia and mycorrhizal fungi.

Abstract Resistin is still a little known hormone of the adipose tissue. The potential role of resistin in the development of DM2 has been currently investigated. The aim of our study was to detect the resistin blood level in patients with DM2, depending on the duration of the disease. In so doing, a determination of resistin and insulin blood level was conducted in 305 patients with DM2, and in a control group of 32 persons. Before testing, the patients were placed into four groups, depending on the duration of type 2 diabetes. Our results indicate that the resistin level was significantly lower in the control group of patients, in comparison with the DM2 patients groups. Moreover, a significantly lower resistin level was found in group I (firstly diagnosed DM2), in comparison with the groups of patients with a different duration of DM2. No correlation between resistin level and BMI, and between resistin and insulin blood level was found. However, a tendency towards increase of resistin blood level is noticeably evident in co-relation with increment of DM2 duration. In addition, the resistin level was considerably lower in patients with no DM2, when compared with patients with diagnosed DM2. Yet, there was no significant difference in the resistin blood level depending on the sex of the patients at the same duration of DM2

✓ The authors report on the potential role of the lumbar infusion technique in the determination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt patency. The test was performed in a series of 12 patients and reliably predicted shunt patency. This method of assessment proved to be superior to computerized tomography scanning because of its ability to demonstrate the CSF dynamics rather than the ventricular size.
