In the present work, the three-dimensional heat and fluid flows around staggered pin-fin arrays are predicted using two hybrid RANS/LES models (an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) model and a stress-blended eddy simulation (SBES) model), and one transitional unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) model, called k-ω SSTLM. The periodic segment geometry with a total of nine pins is considered with a channel height of 2D and a distance of 2.5D between each pin. The corresponding Reynolds number based on the pin diameter and the maximum velocity between pins is 10,000. The two hybrid RANS/LES results show the superior prediction of the mean velocity profiles around the pins, pressure distributions on the pin wall, and Nusselt number distributions. However, the transitional model, k-ω SSTLM, shows large discrepancies except in front of the pins where the flow is not fully developed. The vortical structures are well resolved by the two hybrid RANS/LES models. The SBES model is particularly adept at capturing the 3-D vortex structures after the pins. The effects of the blending function switching between RANS and LES mode of the two hybrid RANS/LES models are also investigated.

An adaptive method for detached-eddy simulation (DES) is tested by simulations of flow in a family of three-dimensional (3D) diffusers. The adaptive method either adjusts the model constant or defaults to a bound if the grid is too coarse. On the present grids, the adaptive method adjusts the model constant over most of the flow, without resorting to the default. Data for the diffuser family were created by wall-resolved, large-eddy simulation (LES), using the dynamic Smagorinsky model, for the purpose of testing turbulence models. The family is a parameterized set of geometries that allows one to test whether the pattern of separation is moving correctly from the top to the side wall as the parameter increases. The adaptive DES model is quite accurate in this regard. It is found to predict the mean velocity accurately, but the pressure coefficient is underpredicted. The latter is due to the onset of separation being slightly earlier in the DES than in the LES.

In order to understand the mechanism of fluid flows in curved pipes, a large number of theoretical and experimental researches have been performed. As a critical parameter of curved pipe, the curvature ratioδhas received much attention, but most of the values ofδare very small (δ<0.1) or relatively small (δ≤0.5). As a preliminary study and simulation this research studied the fluid flow in a 90-degree curved pipe of large curvature ratio. The Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) turbulence model was employed to investigate the fluid flows at the Reynolds number range from 5000 to 20000. After validation of the numerical strategy, the pressure and velocity distribution, pressure drop, fluid flow, and secondary flow along the curved pipe were illustrated. The results show that the fluid flow in a curved pipe with large curvature ratio seems to be unlike that in a curved pipe with small curvature ratio. Large curvature ratio makes the internal flow more complicated; thus, the flow patterns, the separation region, and the oscillatory flow are different.

This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the predictive capabilities of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and hybrid RANS/LES methods for heat transfer, mean velocity, and turbulence in a fundamental trailing edge slot. The geometry represents a landless slot (two-dimensional wall jet) with adjustable slot lip thickness. The reference experimental data taken from the publications of Kacker and Whitelaw [1] [2] [3] [4] contains the adiabatic wall effectiveness together with the velocity and the Reynolds-stress profiles for various blowing ratios and slot lip thicknesses. The simulations were conducted at three different lip thickness and several blowing ratio values. The comparison with the experimental data shows a general advantage of LES and hybrid RANS/LES methods against unsteady RANS. The predictive capability of the tested LES models (dynamic ksgs-equation [5] and WALE [6]) was comparable. The Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) hybrid method [7] also shows satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. In addition to the described baseline investigations, the influence of the inlet turbulence boundary conditions and their implication for the initial mixing layer and heat transfer development were studied for both LES and IDDES.

The present paper presents a detailed computational analysis of flow and dispersion in a generic isolated single–zone buildings. First, a grid generation strategy is discussed, that is inspired by a previous computational analysis and a grid independence study. Different turbulence models are appliedincluding two-equation turbulence models, the differential Reynolds Stress Model, Detached Eddy Simulation and Zonal Large Eddy Simulation. The mean velocity and concentration fields are calculated and compared with the measurements. A satisfactory agreement with the experiments is not observed by any of the modelling approaches, indicating the highly demanding flow and turbulence structure of the problem.

The computational studies on the flow structure, design and performance of a target fluidic flowmeter have been carried out. The computational challenge was to find a universal approach to study a wide range of flow regimes. To this end the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) approach for unsteady flows was applied. The numerical technique enabled to accurately reproduced three dimensional flow structures in a target fluidic flowmeter. The signal analysis of the obtained results was conducted for a range of Reynolds numbers from laminar case up to 4000. The results show that a number of factors such as meter geometry and aspect ratio can influence the performance of the flow meter significantly. A minimum Reynolds number constraint for the measurements to be accurate was evaluated for various design parameters. The significance of using knife edges which influence boundary layer separation was also established. The experimental data, which were obtained for a prototype of flowmeter setup were used to validate numerical tools in the important area of low Reynolds number flows.

Aerodynamic behavior of a small wind turbine is analyzed, both experimentally and numerically. Mainly, an unsteady three-dimensional formulation is adopted, where the flow turbulence is modelled by an Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation framework, using the four-equation transitional Shear Stress Transport model, as the turbulence model. A quite good agreement between the measurements and calculations is observed.

This paper compares the performances of three Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) turbulence models, Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS), Detached Eddy Simulation (DES), and Large Eddy Simulation (LES), for simulating the flow field of a wheel loader engine compartment. The distributions of pressure fields, velocity fields, and vortex structures in a hybrid-grided engine compartment model are analyzed. The result reveals that the LES and DES can capture the detachment and breakage of the trailing edge more abundantly and meticulously than RANS. Additionally, by comparing the relevant calculation time, the feasibility of the DES model is proved to simulate the three-dimensional unsteady flow of engine compartment efficiently and accurately. This paper aims to provide a guiding idea for simulating the transient flow field in the engine compartment, which could serve as a theoretical basis for optimizing and improving the layout of the components of the engine compartment.

Time-accurate, fully 3D numerical simulations and particle image velocity laboratory experiments are carried out for flow through a fully open bileaflet mechanical heart valve under steady (nonpulsatile) inflow conditions. Flows at two different Reynolds numbers, one in the laminar regime and the other turbulent (near-peak systole flow rate), are investigated. A direct numerical simulation is carried out for the laminar flow case while the turbulent flow is investigated with two different unsteady statistical turbulence modeling approaches, unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and detached-eddy simulation (DES) approach. For both the laminar and turbulent cases the computed mean velocity profiles are in good overall agreement with the measurements. For the turbulent simulations, however, the comparisons with the measurements demonstrate clearly the superiority of the DES approach and underscore its potential as a powerful modeling tool of cardiovascular flows at physiological conditions. The study reveals numerous previously unknown features of the flow.
