Microcracks caused by perforating operations in a cement sheath body and interface have the potential to further expand or even cause crossflow during hydraulic fracturing. Currently, there are few quantitative studies on the propagation of initial cement-body microcracks. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element model for the propagation of initial microcracks of the cement sheath body along the axial and circumferential directions during hydraulic fracturing was proposed based on the combination of coupling method of fluid–solid in porous media and the Cohesive Zone Method. The influence of reservoir geological conditions, the mechanical properties of a casing-cement sheath-formation system, and fracturing constructions in the propagation of initial axial microcracks of a cement sheath body was quantitatively analyzed. It can be concluded that the axial extension length of microcracks increased with the increase of elastic modulus of the cement sheath and formation, the flow rate of fracturing fluid, and casing internal pressure, and decreased with the increase of the cement sheath tensile strength and ground stress. The elastic modulus of the cement sheath had a greater influence on the expansion of axial cracks than the formation elastic modulus and casing internal pressure. The effect of fracturing fluid viscosity on the crack expansion was negligible. In order to effectively slow the expansion of the cement sheath body crack, the elastic modulus of the cement sheath can be appropriately reduced to enhance its toughness under the premise of ensuring sufficient strength of the cement sheath.

For the development of tight oil reservoirs, hydraulic fracturing employing variable fluid viscosity and proppant density is essential for addressing the problems of uneven placement of proppants in fractures and low propping efficiency. However, the influence mechanisms of fracturing fluid viscosity and proppant density on proppant transport in fractures remain unclear. Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the discrete element method (DEM), a proppant transport model with fluid–particle two-phase coupling is established in this study. In addition, a novel large-scale visual fracture simulation device was developed to realize the online visual monitoring of proppant transport, and a proppant transport experiment under the condition of variable viscosity fracturing fluid and proppant density was conducted. By comparing the experimental results and the numerical simulation results, the accuracy of the proppant transport numerical model was verified. Subsequently, through a proppant transport numerical simulation, the effects of fracturing fluid viscosity and proppant density on proppant transport were analyzed. The results show that as the viscosity of the fracturing fluid increases, the length of the “no proppant zone” at the front end of the fracture increases, and proppant particles can be transported further. When alternately injecting fracturing fluids of different viscosities, the viscosity ratio of the fracturing fluids should be adjusted between 2 and 5 to form optimal proppant placement. During the process of variable proppant density fracturing, when high-density proppant was pumped after low-density proppant, proppants of different densities laid fractures evenly and vertically. Conversely, when low-density proppant was pumped after high-density proppant, the low-density proppant could be transported farther into the fracture to form a longer sandbank. Based on the abovementioned observations, a novel hydraulic fracturing method is proposed to optimize the placement of proppants in fractures by adjusting the fracturing fluid viscosity and proppant density. This method has been successfully applied to more than 10 oil wells of the Bohai Bay Basin in Eastern China, and the average daily oil production per well increased by 7.4 t, significantly improving the functioning of fracturing. The proppant settlement and transport laws of proppant in fractures during variable viscosity and density fracturing can be efficiently revealed through a visualized proppant transport experiment and numerical simulation study. The novel fracturing method proposed in this study can significantly improve the hydraulic fracturing effect in tight oil reservoirs.

Hydraulic fracturing is a widely used technique for oil and gas extraction from ultra-low porosity and permeability shale reservoirs. During the hydraulic fracturing process, large amounts of water along with specific chemical additives are injected into the shale reservoirs, causing a series of reactions the influence the fluid composition and shale characteristics. This paper is focused on the investigation of the geochemical reactions between shale and fracturing fluid by conducting comparative experiments on different samples at different time scales. By tracking the temporal changes of fluid composition and shale characteristics, we identify the key geochemical reactions during the experiments. The preliminary results show that the dissolution of the relatively unstable minerals in shale, including feldspar, pyrite and carbonate minerals, occurred quickly. During the process of mineral dissolution, a large number of metal elements, such as U, Pb, Ba, Sr, etc., are released, which makes the fluid highly polluted. The fluid–rock reactions also generate many pores, which are mainly caused by dissolution of feldspar and calcite, and potentially can enhance the extraction of shale gas. However, precipitation of secondary minerals like Fe-(oxy) hydroxides and CaSO4 were also observed in our experiments, which on the one hand can restrict the migration of metal elements by adsorption or co-precipitation and on the other hand can occlude the pores, therefore influencing the recovery of hydrocarbon. The different results between the experiments of different samples revealed that mineralogical texture and composition strongly affect the fluid-rock reactions. Therefore, the identification of the shale mineralogical characteristics is essential to formulate fracturing fluid with the lowest chemical reactivity to avoid the contamination released by flowback waters.

Summary Bottomhole-temperature variations have a significant influence on the rheological properties of fracturing fluid and the reaction rates of rock and acid in the operations of acid/hydraulic fracturing. In this work, a semianalytical model is developed for calculating the heat transfer in a wellbore under transient state. In the model, transient heat conduction in the cement sheath and forced convection in the tubing under different flow regimes are considered. Also in this model, calculation methods of heat-transfer coefficients of forced convection in the tubing and natural convection in the annulus are improved in relation to the existing methods. The semianalytical model is verified by monitoring the data of acid and hydraulic fracturing; it is accurate enough to estimate the physical properties of the fracturing fluid and perform simulations in the reservoirs. We studied transient heat conduction in a cement sheath, the influence of flow regimes on tubing, the variation of thermal properties in the wellbore, and the influence of vertical variations of rock type. Simulation results show that the influence of different heat-transfer states of the cement sheath on bottomhole temperature is much more significant under the injection rate of fracturing. Laminar flow is activated by extremely low injection velocity or low temperature in shallow layers. However, such low velocity can never be attained in the fracturing operation. Also, the high heat resistance caused by laminar flow in shallow layers cannot affect the bottomhole temperature significantly because of the low temperature difference between fracturing fluid and formation rock. We also found that the complex vertical variation of rock type and shale and sandstone interbedding could be approximated by the average temperature of simple models that are computationally faster and have an acceptable range of errors.

Non-aqueous or gaseous stimulants are alternative working fluids to water for hydraulic fracturing in shale reservoirs, which offer advantages including conserving water, avoiding clay swelling and decreasing formation damage. Hence, it is crucial to understand fluid-driven fracture propagation and morphology in shale formations. In this research, we conduct fracturing experiments on shale samples with water, liquid carbon dioxide, and supercritical carbon dioxide to explore the effect of fluid characteristics and in situ stress on fracture propagation and morphology. Moreover, a numerical model that couples rock property heterogeneity, micro-scale damage and fluid flow was built to compare with experimental observations. Our results indicate that the competing roles between fluid viscosity and in situ stress determine fluid-driven fracture propagation and morphology during the fracturing process. From the macroscopic aspect, fluid-driven fractures propagate to the direction of maximum horizontal stress direction. From the microscopic aspect, low viscosity fluid easily penetrates into pore throats and creates branches and secondary fractures, which may deflect the main fracture and eventually form the fracture networks. Our results provide a new understanding of fluid-driven fracture propagation, which is beneficial to fracturing fluid selection and fracturing strategy optimization for shale gas hydraulic fracturing operations.

The numerical simulation of hydraulic fracturing fracture propagation is the core content of hydraulic fracturing design and construction. Its simulation results directly affect the effect of fracturing, and can effectively guide the fracturing construction plan and reduce the construction risk. At present, two-dimensional or quasi-three-dimensional models are mainly used, but most of them are used to simulate the vertical fracture of hydraulic fracturing. There are errors in the application process. In this paper, a three-dimensional mathematical model, including an elastic rock mechanics equation and a material flow continuity equation, is established to simulate horizontal fracture propagation in shallow reservoirs. The emphasis of this paper is to propose a new method for solving equations. The basic idea of the iteration method has been proposed by previous scholars: Firstly, assuming that the initial pressure of each point in the fracture is uniform, the fracture height of each initial point can be obtained by using Equation (20). Using the initial height values, the pressure values at each point of continuous variation are calculated by Equation (16), and then the new fracture height values are obtained by Equation (20). Because of the equal initial pressure, this method leads to too many iterations in the later stages, which makes the calculation more complicated. In this paper, a new Picca iteration method is proposed. The iteration parameters are changed sequentially. Firstly, the distribution value of fracture height is assumed. Then, the pressure distribution value is calculated according to Equation (16). Then, the new distribution value of fracture height is obtained by bringing the obtained pressure distribution value into Equation (20). Then, the new distribution value of the fracture height is calculated according to Equation (16). The pressure distribution value completes an iteration process until the iteration satisfies the convergence condition. In addition, Sneddon’s model is introduced into the hypothesis of fracture height to obtain the maximum fracture height and assume that the initial fracture profile is a parabola. Finally, the proposed method can rapidly improve the convergence rate. Next, on the basis of investigating the solutions of previous equations, the Galerkin finite element method is used to solve the above equations. The new Picard iteration sequence method is applied to solve the height and pressure at different points in the fracture. By calculating the stress intensity factor, we can judge whether the fracture continues to extend or not, and then simulate the full three-dimensional horizontal fracture of the hydraulic fracturing expansion process. The infiltration process of three types of oil reservoirs in Daqing Changyuan oilfield is simulated. The results show that during the initial fracture stage, the radius and height of fractures increase rapidly, and the rate of increase slows down with the increase of construction time. The height and net pressure of each point in the fracture are unequal. The height and net pressure of the fracture in the wellbore reach the maximum, and gradually decrease to the front of the fracture. Compared with conventional fracturing, the fracturing-flooding percolation process has the characteristics of short fracture-making and large vertical percolation distance, which can greatly increase the swept volume of flooding fluid and thus enhance oil recovery. With the increase in the rock modulus of elasticity, the radius of fractures decreases and the height of fractures increases. With the increase in construction displacement, the radius of fractures hardly changes, the height of fractures increases, and the vertical infiltration distance of the fractures increases. It is suggested that the construction displacement should be 4.0 m3/min. In the range of fracturing fluid viscosity in the studied block, with the change of fracturing fluid viscosity, the change of fracture radius and height is not obvious. In order to further increase sweep volume, the fracturing fluid viscosity should be further reduced.

With the introduction of hydraulic fracturing technology, the United States has become the largest natural gas producer in the world with a substantial portion of the production coming from shale plays. In this review, we examined current hydraulic fracturing literature including associated wastewater management on quantity and quality of groundwater. We conclude that proper documentation/reporting systems for wastewater discharge and spills need to be enforced at the federal, state, and industrial level. Furthermore, Underground Injection Control (UIC) requirements under SDWA should be extended to hydraulic fracturing operations regardless if diesel fuel is used as a fracturing fluid or not. One of the biggest barriers that hinder the advancement of our knowledge on the hydraulic fracturing process is the lack of transparency of chemicals used in the practice. Federal laws mandating hydraulic companies to disclose fracturing fluid composition and concentration not only to federal and state regulatory agencies but also to health care professionals would encourage this practice. The full disclosure of fracturing chemicals will allow future research to fill knowledge gaps for a better understanding of the impacts of hydraulic fracturing on human health and the environment.

As fracturing materials, fracturing fluid and proppant are two very important parameters in doing hydraulic fracturing design. The combination of fractuirng fluid and proppant selection is the main focus and determinant of success in the hydraulic fracturing process. The high viscosity of the fracturing fluid will make it easier for the proppant to enter to fill the fractured parts, so that the conductivity of the fractured well will be better and can increase the folds of increase (FOI) compared to fracturing fluid with lower viscosity (Economides, 2000). This research was conducted by using the sensitivity test method on the selection of fracturing fluid combinations carried out at the TX-01 well with various sizes of proppants (namely; 12/18, 16/20, and 20/40 mesh) with the proppant selected being ceramic proppant type carbolite performed using the FracCADE simulator. Fracturing fluid was selected based on its viscosity, namely YF240OD and PrimeFRAC20 fluids with viscosity value of 4.123 cp and 171.1 cp, with a fixed pump rate of 14 bpm. The results showed that the combination of high-viscosity fluids (PrimeFRAC20) and 16/20 mesh proppant size resulted in a greater incremental fold (FOI) between the choice of another combination fracturing fluids and proppant sizes, namely 6.25.

AbstractA concomitant effect of a hydraulic fracturing experimenting is frequently fluid permeation into the rock matrix, with the injected fluid permeating through the porous rock matrix (leak-off) rather than contributing to the buildup of borehole pressure, thereby slowing down or impeding the hydro-fracturing process. Different parameters, such as low fluid viscosity, low injection rate and high rock permeability, contribute to fluid permeation. This effect is particularly prominent in highly permeable materials, therefore, making sleeve fracturing tests (where an internal jacket separates the injected fluid in the borehole from the porous rock matrix) necessary to generate hydraulic fractures. The side effect, however, is an increase in pressure breakdown, which results in higher volume of injected fluid and in higher seismic activity. To better understand this phenomenon, we report data from a new comparative study from a suite of micro-hydraulic fracturing experiments on highly permeable and on low-permeability rock samples. Experiments were conducted in both sleeve fracture and direct fluid fracture modes using two different injection rates. Consistent with previous studies, our results show that hydraulic fracturing occurred only with low permeation, either due to the intrinsic low permeability or due to the presence of an inner silicon rubber sleeve. In particular, due to the presence of quasi-impermeable inner sleeve or borehole skin in the sleeve fracturing experiment, fracturing occurs, with the breakdown pressure supporting the linear elastic approach considering poroelastic effects, therefore, with low stress drop and consequently low microseismicity. Rock matrix permeability also controls the presence of precursory Acoustic Emission activity, as this is linked to the infiltration of fluids and consequent expansion of the pore space. Finally, permeability is shown to mainly control fracturing speed, because the permeation of fluid into the newly created fracture via the highly permeable rock matrix slows down its full development. The application of these results to the field may help to reduce induced seismicity and to conduct well stimulation in a more efficient way.
