The use of power converters has grown in the last years with the advances in photovoltaic and wind based power generation systems, and the progress in modern concepts such as microgrids and electric mobility. A consequence has been the development of devices allowing for the exchange of energy among different distribution buses, and feeding AC or DC loads from low DC voltage levels, whose proper operation is achieved by means of specialized control systems. Simultaneously, the power converters used for conventional industrial applications have evolved thanks to the application of new control methods, and the combination of these with well-established techniques. This special issue contributes theoretical and practical advances to the state-of-the-art field at the crossroads of power electronics and control systems. The seven included papers cover particular applications requiring either DC–DC, DC–AC or AC–DC conversion stages.

The paper presents a technological review of modern motion control systems. Existing solutions are discussed and analyzed based on their topologies, limitations, and control techniques. A special attention is given to the servo control and variable frequency control systems, their comparison and applications. The paper also presents future trends in motion control systems.

Abstract With the well-known Transonic Compressor Darmstadt (TCD) in operation since 1994, profound knowledge in designing and operating a sophisticated test-rig is available at the Institute of Gas Turbines and Aerospace Propulsion of TU Darmstadt. During this period, TCD has been subject to a vast number of redesigns within different measurement campaigns (see [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]). To expand the capabilities and ensure a sustainable process of compressor research, a new test facility was designed and built by the institute. The new test rig Transonic Compressor Darmstadt 2 (TCD2) features increased power for higher pressure ratios and higher mass-flow, a state of the art control system, increased flexibility towards different compressor geometries and modern data acquisition hardware and software. Following the successful commissioning of the test-rig in March 2018, a first measurement campaign has been conducted. Early test results regarding aerodynamic performance and aeroelastic effects of the test compressor are presented together with a detailed overview of test-rig infrastructure and control systems as well as the test compressor and the measurement hardware.

In this paper we present the details of methodology pursued in implementation of an HMI and Demo Temperature Monitoring application for wireless sensor-based distributed control systems. The application of WSN for a temperature monitoring and control is composed of a number of sensor nodes (motes) with a networking capability that can be deployed for monitoring and control purposes. The temperature is measured in the real time by the sensor boards that sample and send the data to the monitoring computer through a base station or gateway. This paper proposes how such monitoring system can be setup emphasizing on the aspects of low cost, energy-efficient, easy ad-hoc installation and easy handling and maintenance. This paper focuses on the overall potential of wireless sensor nodes and networking in industrial applications. A specific case study is given for the measurement of temperature (with thermistor or thermocouple), humidity, light and the health of the WSN. The focus was not on these four types of measurements and analysis but rather on the design of a communication protocol and building of an HMI software for monitoring. So, a set of system design requirements are developed that covered the use of the wireless platforms, the design of sensor network, the capabilities for remote data access and management, the connection between the WSN and an HMI software designed with MATLAB.
