Computer adaptive testing (CAT) enables an individualization of tests and better accuracy of knowledge level determination. In CAT, all test participants receive a uniquely tailored set of questions. The number and the difficulty of the next question depend on whether the respondent’s previous answer was correct or incorrect. In order for CAT to work properly, it needs questions with suitably defined levels of difficulty. In this work, the authors compare the results of questions’ difficulty determination given by experts (teachers) and students. Bachelor students of informatics in their first, second, and third year of studies at Subotica Tech—College of Applied Sciences had to answer 44 programming questions in a test and estimate the difficulty for each of those questions. Analyzing the correct answers shows that the basic programming knowledge, taught in the first year of study, evolves very slowly among senior students. The comparison of estimations on questions difficulty highlights that the senior students have a better understanding of basic programming tasks; thus, their estimation of difficulty approximates to that given by the experts.

This chapter deals with the use of Applets, which are examples of software applications, combined with a specific methodology of teaching, based on Paulo Freire’s education concepts. According to his methods, co-creation between its participants is fundamental for the effectiveness of learning process. In that way, to promote a cooperative learning, the Applet should have interactive features. The Chemistry course of Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, in which students take in the first semester of the first year of the engineering course, was the case study. First, a research with the teachers of the Chemical Engineering Department was carried out, to identify the main problems and difficulties teachers and students face. Then, a topic was selected to be explored with the Applet, which was developed and applied to a small group of students. To identify the success of this experiment a questionnaire was created and the results are presented in this chapter. Some conclusions were drawn and the interactive features of the Applet received a positive feedback.

In the actual context of a great diversity of information sources, the discipline of Ethics and Academic Integrity (EAI) was introduced recently in the first year of the Master's studies. As part of the school activity, the access to anti-plagiarism software was made available to teachers and students. The current pandemic has forced the transition from classical classes to the use of the eLearning platform. In this paper the application of the methods of antiplagiarism verification to the distance teaching and the obtained results are described. The conclusions are expressed by comparing the results obtained for the discipline developed through the eLearning platform with those obtained in the previous years in a face-toface teaching manner and with those of the EAI discipline carried out in the first semester of this academic year as well.

The paper deals with peculiarities of adaptation features to the educational process of first-year students and the some factors (aids) which help them overcome emerging difficulties. Among the main tasks at this stage are the development of a questionnaire and conducting an electronic questionnaire among first-year students, identifying the main difficulties and analyzing positive and negative factors of student adaptation in the higher institutions. Some mains aids have been found to help first-year students overcome emerging difficulties. They are electronic resources in libraries, living conditions in the dormitories, relationships in student groups, receiving help from parents, relatives, fellow students, senior students, etc. Using electronic questionnaires, the diagnostics of adaptation of students to the educational process in conditions of the classical university has been conducted among 200 students in 2016 and 750 students in 2018. Most students have established relationships in their student group and think that the atmosphere in their group is favorable. Students get help from parents, relatives, fellow students, senior students and teachers, and students themselves help others as well. There should be more involvement of curators and teachers in adaptation of first-year students. It has been established that the renewed social environment, new living conditions are sufficiently favorable for the successful adaptation of students to the educational process in higher education. Some difficulties in the process of adaptation of first-year students to the university have both objective nature (unfamiliar lifestyle, new learning process, new forms and methods of studies, the need to study more by themselves, etc.), as well as subjective nature (poor school preparation, stress, fatigue caused by lectures, students’ own lack of organizational skills, and laziness, poor study skills, inability to prioritize, etc.). The empirical study proves that in the university conditions there are various factors during the adaptation of first-year students.

A process, called Bio-Denipho, for combined biological phosphorus and nitrogen removal in a combination of an anaerobic tank and two oxidation ditches is described. In this process the anaerobic tank consisting of three sections working in series is followed by two oxidation ditches. These too are working in series, but with both inlet to and outlet from the tanks changing in a cycle. The Bio-Denipho process is described specifically for the process itself and as a case study for the implementation of the process on a 265,000 pe wastewater treatment plant for the city of Aalborg in Denmark. The plant was designed and erected in two stages and the last stage was inaugurated October 31,1989. Lay-out and functions for the plant is described and design loads, plan lay-out and tank volumes are given in this paper together with performance data for the first year in operation.

Pruning is one of the most crucial tree maintenance activities which give an impact on the tree's health and structure. Besides, improper pruning will contribute to the risk of injury to property and the public. This study aims to assess pruning knowledge among four Local authorities in Malaysia. Results found that 69.3 percent of tree pruning workers have a Good pruning knowledge level. However, Topping, pruning types and pruning cut dimension shows the lowest mean percentage of the correct answer. The findings also show that there is a significant positive relationship between pruning knowledge and education level and frequency attending pruning courses.Keywords: Tree pruning; knowledge; sustainable practices; urban treeseISSN: 2398-4287 © 2020. Abstract Background Trainees learn transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) interpretation through independently completing and reviewing selected portions of the study with experts. The diagnostic accuracy of novice TTE interpretation is known to be low and schema for reading TTEs systematically are lacking. The purpose of our study is to identify techniques experts use while reading TTEs which could be used to more effectively teach novice readers. Methods We performed a prospective qualitative case study to observe how experts and trainees interpret TTEs in an academic institution using a concurrent think aloud (CTA) method. Three TTEs of intermediate complexity were given to 3 advanced imaging fellows, 3 first year fellows and 3 expert TTE readers Participants filled out a report while reading and described aloud their thought processes. Sessions were video and audiotaped for analysis. Results Experts and advanced fellows used specific techniques that novices did not including: previewing studies, reviewing multiple images simultaneously, having flexibility in image review order and disease coding, and saving hardest elements to code for the end. Direct observation of TTE reading informed trainee inefficiencies and was a well-received educational tool. Conclusions In this single centered study we identified several unique approaches experts use to interpret TTEs which may be teachable to novices. Although limited in generalizability the findings of this study suggests that a more systematic approach to TTE interpretation, using techniques found in experts, might be of significant value for trainees. Further study is needed to evaluate teaching practices at other institutions and to assess whether implementation of these techniques by novices improves can improve their diagnostic accuracy and efficiency of reading at an earlier stage in their training.
