Attention must be paid to C-section anesthesia effects on mother and offspring. Alfaxalone induction results in improved puppy viability when compared to propofol. The present study aims to evaluate effects of alfaxalone or propofol induction for elective C-section on newborns, expressed as Apgar score and fetal fluids cortisol concentration. Anesthesia was induced with alfaxalone 3 mg/kg iv in 5 bitches (group A), and propofol 4 mg/kg iv in another 5 (group P), maintained with isoflurane. Amniotic and allantoic fluids were collected to determine cortisol concentration. Apgar score, litter size, newborn gender, birth-weight, maternal age, and parity were recorded. ANOVA, U Mann-Whitney test and ANCOVA assessed the effects of drugs on the Apgar score and fetal fluids cortisol. Thirty-six puppies were randomly selected for the study: 16 from group A and 20 from group P. Only the Apgar score significantly differed between groups. ANCOVA confirmed a significantly higher Apgar score in group A underlining the influence of fetal fluids cortisol concentrations, both resulting in covariates. Present results confirm the effect of anesthesia on the Apgar score of newborns, which is significantly higher for alfaxalone than propofol, suggesting the use of fetal fluids cortisol as a covariate. These findings could be a starting point for further investigations when less viable puppies are detected or expected, such as during an emergency C-section.

Background: The prolonged partus is one of the causes of maternal deaths marked by the slow progress of labor. Induction of labor and caesarean section is a common procedure performed on long-term partus events to end pregnancy. The birth acupressure technique is a complementary method to activate the hormone oxytocin at a certain point to use to soften the cervix and increase contraction. Objective: To examine the effect of acupressure point LI4, SP6 and BL60 on the duration of the first stage of labor and APGAR Score of newborn in primigravida. Methods: This research employed a Quasy experimental study with posttest control group design. It was conducted at the Public Health Center of Trauma and Public Health Center of Palaran Samarinda, East Kalimantan. There were 40 respondents selected using purposive sampling, which 20 respondents assigned in the experiment and control group. The duration of the first stage of labor was assessed using partograph and APGAR Score was assessed using APGAR Score assessment sheets. Mann Whitney test was used for data analysisResults: Findings showed that the duration of the first stage of labor in the experiment group was 187 minutes and in the control group was 307 minutes. Mann Whitney test obtained p-value 0.001 (<0.05), which indicated that there was a statistically significant difference of the duration of the first stage of labor between both groups. However, Mann Whitney test for APGAR score showed p-value 0.114 (>0.05), which indicated that there was no significant difference of APGAR score in the experiment and control group. Conclusion: There was a significant effect of acupressure on the duration of the first stage of labor, but no effect of the APGAR score. Therefore, acupressure may be recommended to shorten the duration of the first stage of delivery in primigravida.

This work evaluates the effects of hemiovariectomi (37 some reproductive indices such as conception rate, birth weight and birth litter size in Chinchilla breed of rabbits. Thirty females and six males were used for the experiment. The males were examined for breeding soundness before using them to cross the females. The experiment was replicated in two batches of three groups of five females and a male each at different periods. Hemi-ovariectomy was carried out in the right ovary of 10 does (Group A) and left ovary of another 10 does (Group B). Ten females in Group C were not ovariectomised and served as the control group. All groups were served at reproductive maturity by rotating the bucks. Pregnancy was diagnosed using a standard method. The reproductive indices evaluated included conception rate, birth weight and birth litter size. Data were analyzed using percentages, ratios, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was computed where necessary. Results showed that hemi ovariectomy significantly (P<0.01) reduced the mean litter size, Group A (2.50+58), Group B (3.00+0.71), control (Group C) (6.20+0.84). However, there was increased mean litter birth weight which, differed significantly (P<0.01) from that of the control (27.06), Group A (33.64+1.86) and Group B (33.93=1.75). Also, the conception rate in the treated groups averaged 65% while the control was 80%. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between the groups in the interval from the introduction of the huck to the does to the time of conception. It is concluded thai hemiovariectomy has negative effect on the conception rate and birth litter size but has positive effect on birth litter weight. The procedure has shown that in highly priced breed of animal with unilateral ovarian uilments such an animal can still be used for breeding using the healthy ovary: The procedure could also be a more reliable method of birth control in pet animals as well as a means of producing heavy weight offspring.

Context: Anaemia is a common pregnancy related disorder in Bangladesh that causes various maternal and fetal problems. A prospective study was designed to see the associated maternal factors and fetal outcome in different categories of anaemia and to compare with that of normal pregnancy. Methods: The study was carried out on 60 Bangladeshi women within 35-40 weeks of gestation. Among them, 20 with normal uncomplicated pregnancies were considered as control group or group A, another 27 having pregnancies with mild anaemia were considered as group B, and 13 having pregnancies with moderate anaemia were considered as group C. Severe anaemic mothers were considered as group D, but not found during the period of collection of data for this study. The mothers were selected as who were suffering from antenatal anaemia i.e. having heamoglobin level <10 gm/dl (mild, if <10 gm/dl; moderate, if <8 gm/dl; and severe, if <6 gm/dl) and control i.e. having heamoglobin level ≥10 gm/dl. The foetal outcome was observed and recorded after delivery. Results: The mean age of the mother was 23.65±3.83 years, 27.26±4.93 years and 25.85±4.62 years and the mean number of gravidity was 1.65±0.67, 2.15±0.72 and 2.69±1.03 in group A, group B and group C respectively. The difference was statistically highly significant in between A and C (p<0.001) and also significant in between A & B and B & C (p<0.05). The mean gestational age of the mother was 38.65±0.88 weeks, 37.37±1.01 weeks and 37.15±1.28 weeks in group A, group B and group C respectively and the difference was statistically significant between A & B and A & C (p<0.001). The mean birth weight of the neonate was 3.09±0.30 Kg., 2.99±0.16 Kg. and 2.95±0.21 Kg., while the mean APGAR score of the neonate at first minute of birth was 8.90±1.07, 8.11±0.89 and 7.69±0.48 in group A, group B and group C respectively. No significant difference was found in birth weight of the newborn babies in between the groups of the mothers. However, the difference was found significant in between A & B (p<0.01) and A & C (p<0.001), in case of APGAR score. AbstractTo evaluate the effect of litter size and littermate weight on low-birth-weight (< 1 kg) piglets that have been cross-fostered, piglets' pre-weaning performance in the following groups were compared. Group A (no. = 10), low-birth-weight piglets raised with equal number of heavy-birth-weight piglets in small (eight piglets) litters; group B (no. = 10), low-birth-weight piglets raised with equal number of heavy-birth-weight piglets in large (12 piglets) litters; group C (no. = 10), low-birth-weight piglets raised with equal number of average-birth-weight piglets in small (eight piglets) litters; D (no. = 10), low-birth-weight piglets raised with equal number of average-birth-weight piglets in large (12 piglets) litters; E (no. = 10), small (eight piglets) low-birth-weight litters; F (no. = 10), large (12 piglets) low-birth-weight litters.Mortality of low-birth-weight piglets in large litters was greater (P < 0.001) with heavy littermates, but in small litters was no different. Weight gain of piglets until day 3 post partum was not significantly (P > 0.05) affected by littermate weight and litter size, or their interaction. Weight at 21 days post partum was significantly affected by littermate weight, litter size, and their interaction. Low-birth-weight piglets in small litters had significantly higher 21-day weights in large litters (P < 0.01, P < 0.05 and P < 0.05 with littermates of low, average and heavy birth weight respectively). In large but not small litters, low-birth-weight piglets missed more nursing episodes and spent more time in teat disputes than their heavier littermates whether in heavy-birth-weight (P < 0.01), or average-birth-weight (P < 0.05) litters.Littermate weight may affect the performance of low-birth-weight piglets due to direct competition for access to a functional teat.

The aim of this study is to investigate the mortality profile in very-low-birth-weight infants, as well as model the association of some variables with neonatal mortality, in order to detect possible preventable causes of death. This retrospective cross-sectional study included a total of 109 Very-Low-Weight-Infants admitted to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a municipality in Minas Gerais, Brazil, between January 2012 and December 2016. The neonates were divided into two groups: death and non-death. Frequency distributions were constructed for the variables maternal age, sex, birth weight, gestational age, type of delivery, asphyxia (Apgar at five minutes), administration of antenatal corticosteroids, hypothermia, twinning, and amniotic membrane rupture. The survival curve was plotted using the Kaplan-Meier non-parametric estimator, and theassociation between death and the observed explanatory variables was modeled via Logistic Regression. In the survivor group, most infants exhibited normothermia and weight ≥1,000g. As for the death group, weight below 1,000g and hypothermic infants were predominant. In both groups, maternal age between 18 and 35 years prevailed, as well as the male sex, gestational age of 224 days, cesarean delivery, and fifth minute Apgar scores ≥7. The survival rate, estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, showed a decrease from 1.0 to 0.55 at the beginning of the observation period. The adjusted logistic regression model included fetal weight and the fifth minute Apgar score. No significant relationship was found between death and the variables type of delivery, hypothermia, and antenatal corticosteroid use.Logistic regression indicated a high probability of death associated with birth weight and the Apgar score at five minutes. The low association with the other variables may be related to the good quality of prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care provided in the region and the analyzed hospital.
