3-PG: ein physiologisches Waldwachstumsmodell Ertragstafeln waren die ersten Waldwachstumsmodelle, die in Europa entwickelt wurden. Diese empirischen Modelle sind für die Anwendung unter zukünftigen klimatischen Bedingungen, für Mischbestände oder für die Abschätzung der Effekte neuer waldbaulicher Systeme ungeeignet. In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden zunehmend Alternativen zu Ertragstafeln entwickelt, unter anderem prozessbasierte Modelle, die auch Zustände ausserhalb der Beobachtungsdaten abbilden können. Solche Modelle berücksichtigen Wachstumsdaten, aber ihre Formulierungen basieren meist auf physiologischen und allometrischen Prinzipien des Pflanzenwachstums. Zu dieser Modellfamilie gehört 3-PG (Physiological Processes Predicting Growth), das in Australien und Nordamerika für gleichaltrige Reinbestände von immergrünen Laub- und Nadelbäumen entwickelt wurde. In einer kürzlich erfolgten Weiterentwicklung (Version 3-PGmix) können auch Wechselwirkungen zwischen Bäumen verschiedener Grösse, verschiedenen Alters und verschiedener Arten simuliert werden. Der Artikel beschreibt das Modell, das aus sechs Untermodellen besteht und trotz seiner physiologischen Grundlagen Kenngrössen liefert, die für die praktische Forstwirtschaft von grosser Bedeutung sind. Zwei Beispiele von Anwendungen von 3-PG für die Schweiz werden vorgestellt. Im ersten Beispiel wird die Veränderung des Wachstums in Mischbeständen aus Waldföhre (Pinus sylvestris) und Buche (Fagus sylvatica) aufgrund des Klimawandels dargestellt. Dabei wird gezeigt, dass das Wachstum der Buche durch erhöhte Trockenheit wesentlich stärker eingeschränkt wird als jenes der Waldföhre, die zwar ebenfalls durch die Trockenheit stärker limitiert wird, aber gleichzeitig vom geringeren Konkurrenzdruck durch die Buche profitiert. Im zweiten Beispiel wird 3-PG angewendet, um den klimatischen Stress für die Buche als Funktion der Standorteigenschaften schweizweit zu quantifizieren. Beide Beispiele zeigen, dass 3-PG standortspezifische Informationen liefert, wie die Waldwachstumsdynamik durch Klima, Artenzusammensetzung und Waldbau beeinflusst wird.

Wood formation requires a continuous supply of carbohydrates for structural growth and metabolism. In the montane belt of the central Austrian Alps, we monitored the temporal dynamics of xylem growth and nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) in stem sapwood of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) during the growing season of 2009, which was characterized by exceptional soil dryness within the study area. Soil water content dropped below 10% at the time of maximum xylem growth at the end of May. Histological analyses have been used to describe cambial activity and xylem growth. Determination of NSC was performed using specific enzymatic assays revealing that total NSC ranged from 0.8% to 1.7% dry matter throughout the year. Significant variations (P < 0.05) of the size of the NSC pool were observed during the growing season. Starch showed persistent abundance throughout the year, reaching a maximum shortly before onset of late wood formation in mid-July. Seasonal dynamics of NSC and xylem growth suggest that (i) high sink activity occurred at the start of the growing season in spring and during late wood formation in summer and (ii) there was no particular shortage in NSC, which caused P. sylvestris to draw upon stem reserves more heavily during the drought in 2009.

Climate development models predict alterations that will critically influence plant metabolism in southern and central Europe. Although the molecular players involved in the response to climatic stress factors have been well described in crops, little information is available for forest tree species. Consequently, the identification of molecular biomarkers suitable for evaluating the actual impact of different environmental stress conditions on forest plants would be of great importance for monitoring purposes and forest management. In this study, we evaluated a biochemical methodology for the assessment of temperature stress in European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings by analyzing a set of metabolites and enzymes involved in free radical scavenging and cell wall synthesis. The results indicate that the combined analysis of the specific activities and isoform profile of peroxidases, superoxide dismutases, and glutathione peroxidases coupled with the amount variation of phenolic compounds enabled the discrimination between stressed and control seedlings. This approach represents a promising platform for the assessment of temperature stress in forest trees and could also enhance selection and breeding practices, allowing for plants more tolerant and (or) resistant to abiotic stress.
