The effects of acute morphine administration on intact erythrocytes and on their flow properties were studied by measuring the mean cell volume, cell geometry, and whole blood and plasma viscosities. Morphine caused a small (2–7%) increase in mean cell volume. Changes in cell geometry were found to be time dependent and most pronounced in concave portions of the red cells. Whole blood viscosity was found to decrease upon morphine treatment; this may be due in part to a concurrent decrease in plasma viscosity.

alpha Thalassemia modifies the hematologic expression of homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease, resulting in increased total hemoglobin and HbA2 and decreased HbF, mean cell volume, reticulocytes, irreversibly sickled cells, and bilirubin levels. The age at which these changes develop in children with SS disease is unknown. Ascertainment of globin gene status in a large representative sample of children with SS disease has afforded an opportunity to study the hematologic indices in nine children homozygous for alpha thalassemia 2 (two-gene group), 90 children heterozygous for alpha thalassemia 2 (three-gene group), and 167 children with a normal alpha globin gene complement (four-gene group). The two-gene group had significantly lower mean cell volumes from birth, higher red cell counts from one month, lower reticulocytes from three months, and higher HbA2 levels from one year, as compared with the four-gene group. Children with three genes had intermediate indices but resembled more closely the four-gene group. Differences in total hemoglobin or in fetal hemoglobin between the groups were not apparent by eight years of age. The most characteristic differences of the two-gene group were the raised proportional HbA2 level and low mean cell volume, the latter having some predictive value for alpha thalassemia status at birth.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. The study was conducted in Elobied town during the period May 2011 to September 2011. The aim of this study is to detect the abnormalities of leucocytes among sickle cell anemic patients. 40 sickle cell anemic patients; age range between 8 months to 23 years. Blood sample was taken for all patients and the laboratory investigation were performed using automated estimation for: hemoglobin (Hb), Packed cell volume (PCV), red cell count (RBCs), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), mean cell concentration (MCHC), and total white blood cells, comment on blood film using manual methods. The conclusion of this study there is increase in total white blood cells with shift to left in neutrophil precursor in sickle cell patients with complications ,the most immature cells are band form, myelocytes and metamyelocytes, and there also lymphocytosis and neutrophilia which has been increases in response to infections.

Abstract 1. Critical size analysis of the lymphoid cell populations of the developing chick bursa of Fabricius and thymus indicates that characteristic shifts in cell size distribution, modal cell volume and mean cell volume occur during morphogenesis of these organs. 2. Comparison of bursa and thymus shows that while there are clear differences between the lymphoid cells of these two structures, the pattern of morphogenetic change is similar. 3. 19-nortestosterone injected in low doses can partially inhibit bursal development without affecting thymus morphogenesis. Depending on the age of the embryo at time of injection, however, doses sufficient to produce complete bursal inhibition may also retard thymic morphogenesis. 4. The size differences found between bursal and thymic lymphocytes in the chicken parallel the size differences found between lymph node and thymic lymphocytes in the mouse.

Seven years ago the authors examined 64 consecutive female out-patients with macrocytosis (erythrocyte mean cell volume ⩾ 100 fl). The cause remained undetermined in 23 (35.9%). Their patient histories were evaluated in 1992, and the new highly specific alcohol marker, serum carbohydrate-deficient transferrin, from the frozen sera taken during the initial study was examined. It was elevated in 6 of the 23 women. Furthermore, four of these six had visited the health centre after 1985 and they all had clinical records indicative of alcohol problems. Because early intervention has proved to be effective, information about the risks of alcohol abuse (intervention) should be given to women with suspect alcohol-induced symptoms or signs.
