Background:  Diabetes has a significant impact on the impaired function of the reproductive system in the testis.Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of curcumin from turmeric on structural changes of testicular tissues and microvasculature in STZ-induced diabetic rats.Methods: Rats were injected with a single dose of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg BW) to induce a diabetic condition. Three days after the injection, rats with a blood sugar level > 250 mg/dl were considered diabetic. Rats were allocated to one of three groups, diabetic (DM), diabetic rats receiving curcumin (DMC) (200 mg/kg BW), and control (C). Testicular tissues were studied eight weeks after the treatment using the histological technique. Testicular microvasculature was examined using the vascular corrosion cast technique under a scanning electron microscope (SEM).Results: The testicular tissue of DM group showed damaged seminiferous tubules, spermatocytes, and spermatids with necrosis and germ cells degeneration. Destruction of testicular arteries and veins in pampiniform plexus were demonstrated. The destroyed capillaries, arterioles, and venules demonstrated stenosis and shrinkage. The vessel diameter in all DM groups decreased. In the DMC group which received curcumin, the appearance of all seminiferous tubules, spermatogenic, and sertoli cell was normal. The reconstruction and restoration of testicular artery, pampiniform plexus, capillary network, arterioles, and venules were clear. As a result of curcumin supplementation, the standard and healthy testis microvasculature was restored. The DMC vessels diameter increased back to a quasi normal condition, particularly at the artery, arteriole, and capillary levels.Conclusions: The results provided evident for effects of curcumin could be associated with recovering and improvement of the testicular tissues and microvasculatures in diabetic condition.Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, Streptozotocin, Curcumin, Testis, Microvasculature, Vascular corrosion cast, Scanning electron microscope

SummaryWe studied the morphology of the aortic valves of 1,036 Syrian hamsters belonging to two families subjected to high endogamous pressure. Most (n=955) specimens were examined using a corrosion-cast technique. In the remaining 81 specimens, valvar morphology was assessed by means of a stereomicroscope, and in 18 of these cases a histologic study was also performed. In one of the families, a high proportion (30.5%) of hamsters had aortic valves with two leaflets, the aortic sinuses being oriented ventrodorsally. The percentage of such anomalous valves was found to be positively correlated with the inbreeding coefficient of specimens. In the other family, the occurrence of an aortic valve with two leaflets was a sporadic event. Stereoscopic and histologic observations demonstrated that, in 52 of 63 aortic valves with three leaflets, the ventral commissure between the right and left leaflets was partially fused, while in 10 other cases this commissure was completely fused. In addition, in nine of 18 aortic valves with two leaflets, there was a more or less well-developed raphe located in the ventral aortic sinus, approximately where the true ventral commissure would have been. Our observations suggest the existence of a continuous spectrum of aortic valvar morphology, ranging from a valve with three leaflets and no fusion of the ventral commissure to an aortic valve with two leaflets devoid of any raphe. This spectrum seems to be the result of the interaction of genetic and intrauterine environmental factors. Results of crosses between both related and unrelated hamsters suggest that the observed morphology in individuals is the result of quantitative inheritance.

The aim of this study was to investigate the variations as well as the length of A. cystica and its branches in pigs using corrosion casting method with the self-polymerising resin Duracryl® Plus. The method included several steps: hepatectomy, precasting treatment, injection of Duracryl, polymerisation of casting medium, corrosive treatment, cleaning of the corrosion casts, air-drying and preservation of casts. The livers were collected from 12 male 6-month-old pigs (crossbred Landrace×Danube White). With regards to the beginning of A. cystica, 4 variations were observed and grouped as follows: variation A  A. cystica detached from R. dexter medialis, together with R. quadratus (variation A1), or alone (variation A2); variation B1 – A. cystica originated from A. gastroduodenalis, or was a branch of the common trunk (R. dexter) (variation B2). The metric data were processed by GraphPad Prism 6 for Windows. Clinically relevant relations between А. сystica, Ductus cysticus, A. celiaca and R. sinister also were described. The new information re-ceived about the blood supply of the gallbladder would contribute to the understanding of the etiology of postoperative complications as a result of surgical interventions in this location and for their prevention.
