A concrete damage model has been incorporated in finite element code ABAQUS as concrete damaged plasticity model to examine the sensitivity of the damage, as ABAQUS has the model that is capable of stiffness degradation in cracking which is the basis of fracture mechanics. Nonlinear constitutive relationships for concrete and steel have been incorporated in the model. The static and dynamic response of the structure at 10 different damage levels is studied and the sensitivity of the damage model towards the presence of non-linearity has been discussed. The concrete damaged plasticity model is capable of predicting formation of cracks in concrete beams against any kind of loads, as the results match with the experimental results. It can be concluded that the concrete damaged plasticity is a versatile tool for modeling RC structures and careful choice of solution procedures for dynamic analysis can lead to accurate modeling of concrete using a few routine laboratory test results of the materials.

Introduction:Square reinforced concrete (RC) columns with the confinement effect of transverse reinforcement perform well in ductility and have been used widely in RC structures. Its behavior is the classic topic of anti-seismic and anti-collapse analysis of RC structures. With the advancement of the finite element (FE) analysis technology, the general-purpose simulation tools such as ABAQUS and ANSYS have been universally used to analyze the behavior of structures and members, where the material constitutive model is a key problem in the analysis.Methods:In this study, a new uniaxial compressive stress-strain curve of the confined concrete considering confinement effect of transverse reinforcement in square RC columns was proposed for the concrete damaged plasticity model in ABAQUS to solve the problem that there is no proper uniaxial compressive stress-strain curve for the concrete damaged plasticity model to describe the behavior of concrete confined by transverse reinforcement. Based on the proposed stress-strain relationship, a FE model was developed to analyze the behaviour of laterally confined RC columns under concentric loading.Results:The finite element model is able to predict the response of the confined RC columns from different experiments with reasonable accuracy. Finally, a parametric study was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of confinement reinforcement configuration on the behavior of core concrete in square section.

The increase of axle load and train speed would cause intense wheelrail interactions, and lead to potential vibration related problems in train operation. For the low-frequency vibration reduction of a track system, a multi-layer track structure was proposed and analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Firstly, the analytical solution was derived theoretically, and followed by a parametric analysis to verify the vibration reduction performance. Then, a finite element simulation is carried out to highlight the influence of the tuned slab damper. Finally, the vibration and noise tests are performed to verify the results of the analytical solution and finite element simulation. As the finite element simulation indicates, after installation of the tuned slab damper, the peak reaction force of the foundation can be reduced by 60%, and the peak value of the vertical vibration acceleration would decrease by 50%. The vibration test results show that the insertion losses for the total vibration levels are 13.3 dB in the vertical direction and 21.7 dB in the transverse direction. The noise test results show that the data of each measurement point is smoother and smaller, and the noise in the generating position and propagation path can be reduced by 1.9 dB–5.5 dB.

Die numerische Simulation des Tragverhaltens von Beton- und Stahlbetonkonstruktionen mit nicht-linearen Finite-Elemente-Modellen gewinnt in der konstruktiven Ingenieurpraxis zunehmend an Bedeutung. In kommerziellen Finite-Elemente-Programmen stehen dem Anwender unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten zur Abbildung des Betonverhaltens in Form von plastischen Materialmodellen zur Verfügung. Zur Anwendung dieser Materialmodelle ist dabei in der Regel die Kenntnis des Betontragverhaltens unter einaxialer Druck- und Zugbeanspruchung erforderlich. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden verschiedene Ansätze zur mathematischen Beschreibung dieser konstitutiven Beziehungen für Normalbeton und ultrahochfesten Beton (UHPC) vorgestellt und im Hinblick auf ihre Anwendbarkeit in plastischen Materialmodellen untersucht. Darauf aufbauend werden numerische Simulationen mit einem plastischen Schädigungsmodell unter Verwendung eines einheitlichen Parametersatzes durchgeführt und mit den Ergebnissen experimenteller Untersuchungen verglichen. Die Untersuchungen umfassen hierbei Materialprüfungen an Normalbeton und UHPC unter verschiedenen ein- und mehraxialen Spannungszuständen. Durch die Wahl geeigneter konstitutiver Beziehungen kann für die untersuchten Spannungszustände eine gute Übereinstimmung zwischen simuliertem und experimentell ermitteltem Betontragverhalten erreicht werden.

Yielding tests of VTI-4 alloy specimens have been carried out at temperature 1010 °C under conditions of high-speed loading. Based on the test results the modulus of elasticity as well as axial and radial residual deformation values in the end and central zones for each loading stage were determined. Fitting criteria for finite element simulation and the experiment are proposed with tracing VTI-4 alloy diagram deformation at temperature 1010 °C and strain rate of 2.5 sec–1. As a result of finite element simulation the relationship between the material structures obtained during high-speed yielding and the deflected modes in different zones was determined.

Seismic performance is basically required in precast shear wall. This study focuses on evaluation and improvement on precast shear wall seismic performance. By carrying out the finite-element simulation on a precast shear wall spatial model with new connector from a practical high-rise precast residential building, which was named as NPGCS and experimentally tested by low-cyclic reversed lateral loads in early studies, the performance results including strengths, stiffness, stress, and concrete damage ratio distributions were obtained, and the reliability of NPGCS spatial model was verified. According to the testing results, the finite-element simulation for the NPGCS spatial model is reliable and relatively accurate, especially for applying contact and beam elements into numerical analysis of precast interfaces and dowel shear actions, respectively. The strengths, stiffness, stress, and concrete damage ratio distributions from the simulation also supported the experimental results and conclusions.

The finite element procedure with the unified disturbed state modeling concept presented in Part I, Basaran et al. (1998), is verified here with respect to laboratory test results for Pb40/Sn60 eutectic solder alloy. This solder alloy is a commonly used interconnection material for surface mount technology packages. It is demonstrated that the proposed procedure provides highly satisfactory correlation with the observed laboratory behavior of materials and with test results for a chip-substrate system simulated in the laboratory.
