Given a continuation of current trends, with increasing population growth and declining food production, Southern Africa (excluding South Africa) which could nearly feed itself during 1979–81, will be only 64 per cent self-sufficient by the turn of the century. Zimbabwe has a particularly important rôle to play in trying to prevent such a disaster. It is by far the most important exporter of food and cash crops in the region, and has been allocated the task of co-ordinating a food-security strategy for the nine member-states of the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference, namely Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Abstract Salmonella infection in broilers is a main foodborne illness that substantially threatens food security. This study aimed to examine the effects of a novel polysaccharide isolated from alfalfa (APS) on the intestinal microbiome and systemic health of Salmonella-infected broilers. The results indicated that broilers receiving the APS-supplemented diet had the improved (P < 0.05) growth performance and gut health than those fed no APS-supplemented diet. Dietary APS supplementation enhanced (P < 0.05) the abundance of Bacteroidetes and reduced (P < 0.05) the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidete. Supplementation with APS enhanced (P < 0.05) the richness of gut beneficial microbes such as Bacteroidetes, Barnesiella, Parabacteroides, Butyricimonas, and Prevotellaceae, while decreased (P < 0.05) the abundance of facultative anaerobic bacteria including Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Ruminococcaceae, Lachnospiraceae, and Burkholderiaceae in the Salmonella-infected broilers. The Bacteroides and Odoribacter were identified as the two core microbes across all treatments and combined with their syntrophic microbes formed the hub in co-occurrence networks linking microbiome structure to performance of broilers. Taken together, dietary APS supplementation improved the systemic health of broilers by reshaping the intestinal microbiome regardless of whether Salmonella infection was present. Therefore, APS can be employed as a potential functional additives to inhibit the Salmonella and enhance the food safety in poultry farming.

The food safety of the region is a fundamental foundation of the country’s economic security and one of the most important prerequisites for sustainable development. Unfortunately, the problems of ensuring food security of the regions of Ukraine are not only resolved, but also ultimately aggravated, which negatively affects the quality of life of the population and the development of human potential. An important step in solving the problem of physical and economic food availability to all population is developing a regional food safety strategy. In this regard, the purpose of the article is to develop methodological tools for modeling the region’s food security strategy taking into account the peculiarities of its development and existing production and resource potential. The authors explained the concept of “food security strategy”, “food safety potential of the region” and methods for assessing its main components. The author’s model of the food security strategy creation was developed and implemented on the example of the Ukrainian Black Sea region. This model can be used to monitor the situation with food provision, to model the impact on the state of the food supply of individual strategic decisions and to determine the causes of deviations and growth reserves in any region irrespective of its size or administrative status.

Food security strategies are determined by the prevailing realities within households and communities. Therefore, it is not surprising that in South Africa agricultural transformation is an important food security strategy. This article examines the role of human development and food sovereignty in fostering conditions that enable rural households to enhance their food security capabilities. Using an in-depth analysis of literature, national, regional and international instruments, this article takes its departure from the fact that subsistence agriculture is an effective strategy for improving household food needs when implemented within the broader human rights framework of human development. The results reveal that agriculture has the potential to increase household food security if appropriate agricultural technologies and productive resources such as land are made accessible to households. Further, for agriculture to attain optimal efficiency as a food security strategy, policies on agrarian transformation should be implemented within broader social development programmes.

Cereals is one fundamental factor about people's livelihood. Relatively abundant food production, to maintain a certain number, variety and quality of food reserves, directly related to national security, social stability and economic development. Maintain a certain amount, variety and quality food reserves, which is essential to ensure national food security measures. Cereals reserve and quantity monitor is a key element for food security strategy. However, most of the granaries were built many years ago, outdated facilities, technical means backward in China and many other countries. Access depends on the number of grain of experience and estimation. As different varieties of grain, place of origin, degree of packing, texture, moisture content and shelf life of different, the estimated cereals quantity data using traditional methods and real data usually have a large deviation. This restricts the development and implementation of national food security strategy. Fortunately, with the rapid development and wide application of modern information technologies, they are rapidly penetrated all aspects of grain fields and applications. Food safety system has been extended to modern technology, management and information technology and network support integrated system, and gradually developed into a warehouse as the mainstay and the main form of processing and production, related to transportation, storage, processing, circulation and consumption the whole process of information systems. Modern information technologies improve accuracy and reliability of cereals weight measure. In this paper, a cereals weight measure system combining of the new types sensors and communication technology is used in food granary. Vibrating wire pressure sensor is deployed in the bottom grain storage in advance, and then began to store grain silos. The sensor signals are sent to collection device or monitoring the background. Background calculates the weight of grain storage silos by the received data. Pressure sensor can accurately obtain the food and the weight of cereals can be scientifically obtained.
