Both the novel and the film Benzina think of the literary and the visual as contesting sites for women. In revisiting the fields of space within a capitalist society and the struggle for representation of sexual identity, these two works successfully deploy strategies where the visual narrative — literary and cinematic — confirms its ability to be a place in which subjects try out distinct possibilities of their existential corporeality. Rather than presenting crystallized subjectivities, these works analyze the attempts a lesbian couple makes at finding their place within a social system still fraught by stereotypization of gender roles. This article examines how Benzina's cinematic adaptation convincingly extricates representations of the protagonists' struggle in Italian society. The idea of a feminist geometry, a triangle whose theorem is of a problematic nature, at once social and personal of arduous solution was prompted by my memory of American painter Ed Ruscha's diagonal compositions entitled Gas Stations.

The novel Sepertiga Malam di Manhattan by Arumi E is very interesting to study. This novel is a novel about the struggle of a family to get happiness. This novel is the Arumi E's 27th newest novel. The struggle in this novel is to make the family happy, expecting for the baby. Before writing the novel, Arumi E did a research in the places written in the novel to achieve a very interesting fictional story and most of this story was taken from the traveling results so it was so interesting. The objective of this research is to describe (1) the Autopoetic System in the novel Sepertiga MalamdiManhattan by Arumi E. (2) The differentiation system in the Novel Sepertiga Malamdi Manhattan by Arumi E.The research method used is in the form of a descriptive qualitative method that uses a social system approach. The method used by the researcher is the dialectical method. The data source used in this research is the novel Sepertiga Malamdi Manhattan by Arumi E, published by Gramedia publisher in 2018. The data collection in this study uses the steps of reading the novel. To collect data, the researcher use any instrument.There are two results of the study: (1) The autopoetic system in the novel Sepertiga MalamdiManhattan by Arumi E. is concerning to some characters who have their own beliefs or rules in their lives who do not want to follow the rules of others, they are more confident in their own way to success and purpose of life. (2) The system of differentiation in the novel Sepertiga Malamdi Manhattan by Arumi E. is covering the handling of changes in the environment, the characters are able to adapt to the new environment, which has a different culture from the original culture. This shows evidence of the system autopoetic and differentiation in the novel Sepertiga MalamdiManhattan by Arumi E.

Abstract This article analyzes queerness in Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019), teasing out how the queer relationship at the core of the novel is framed. Ocean Vuong’s novel mobilizes queerness to straddle boundaries between cultures, gender roles and bodies. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous places the queer sexual orientations and gender performances of its protagonists, one Vietnamese American, one white American, in firm relation to the formative force of cultural contexts. Zooming in on two young boys’ queerness, the novel diversifies gender roles and makes room especially for non-normative masculinities. What is more, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous mobilizes the abject to showcase how queer sexual intimacy straddles boundaries between bodies and subjects. The article attends to language politics in connection with the novel’s coming-out performance, striated constructions of gender roles and their interplay with the abject and “bottomhood” (Nguyen 2014: 2) to come to grips with the novel’s diversification of queer masculinities.

Since the Second Vatican Council opened in 1962, several changes have occurred in the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits have suffered a drop in manpower: Membership in the international order peaked at over 36,000 men in 1965 and had fallen by 1988 to below 25,000. Another change has been ideological: The Jesuits seem to have shifted from a conservative or disengaged posture toward a progressive and occasionally radical stance on social and political matters, and they have struggled to implement this orientation by abandoning some of their routine commitments and taking on new ventures in “faith and justice.” Finally, the Society of Jesus has deregimented its procedures in the areas of training and governance. It would appear that the liberalization that took place in mainline Protestant denominations over several decades was recapitulated by the Jesuits in a shorter period.

Abstract Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway — published in 1925 — not only represents a major work regarding its literary techniques during the years of British Modernism, but also constitutes a critique of the social system of the post-war years, which was experiencing a change regarding the strict Victorian stereotypes of gender. Social status linked to sartorial fashion is a recurring element in the novel when considering these configurations. Woolf vindicates through different characters’ reflections a rearrangement of femininity and masculinity.

Contemporary research has primarily focused on different strategies of Marginalisation. Marginalization mein ans ‘to make somebody feel as they are not important and cannot influence decisions or conclusions, or to put somebody in a powerless position. Mahaswetha Devi’s Rudali focuses on the two women who flourish in a partnership for survival. The novel represents the struggle of Sanichari suppressed against poverty, humiliation, and demolished by an exploitative patriarchal caste-bases social system. This paper focuses on how the character Sanichari undertakes the different situations to survive in society.

AbstrakFeodalisme muncul pada abad pertengahan sebagai dampak dari implementasi sistem vassal. Feodalisme tidak pernah hilang bahkan setelah era imperialisme telah berakhir. Sistem politik dan sosial yang sangat membanggakan hirarki manusia tersebut selalu hadir dalam kehidupan manusia, terutama di tempat tempat yang masih mengadopsi sistem tuan tanah. Dampak terbesar dari feodalisme adalah penghancuran nilai-nilai kemanusiaan dengan timbulnya diskriminasi yang tidak didasarkan pada prestasi seseorang, tetapi pada posisi dan kekuasaan seseorang. Kajian ini mendapati bahwa dalam novel berjudul Pipisahan, feodalisme menjadi pencetus timbulnya kelompok marginal dalam kehidupan masyarakat, terutama di lingkungan terkecil seperti keluarga. Dalam kajian tersebut, feodalisme terdapat dalam korpus berupa tuturan dan perilaku tokoh bapak mertua terhadap anak dan menantunya. Korpus tersebut dikaji berdasarkan pada konsep feodalisme berikut, antara lain, feodalisme Simorangkir, Reeser, dan Connell. Sementara itu, sisi maskulinitas dikaji berdasarkan konsep Humm sementara konsep tentang meme dilandasi pandangan Dawskins. AbstractFeudalism emerged in the middle ages as a result of the implementation of vassal system. Feudalism never disappear even after the era of imperialism has ended. Political and social system which is very proud of the human hierarchy is present in human life, especially in places that are still adopting the landlord system. The biggest impact of feudalism is destruction of human values with the incidence of discrimination which is not based on individual achievement, but on one's position and power. This study found that in the novel entitled Pipisahan, feudalism trigger the onset of marginalized groups in public life, especially in the smallest environments like family. In this study, feudalism contained in the corpus in the form of speech and behavior of the father figures of children and daughter-in-law. The corpus studied based on the concept of feudalism as follow; feudalism Simorangkir, Reeser, and Connell. Meanwhile, the concept of masculinity assessed based Humm, while the concept of the meme is based on Dawskins.

Haggard’s Ayesha is the continuation of the Victorian dream novel She. H. Rider Haggard's She, subtitled A History of Adventure, is figured to be among top rated books at any point distributed: it had sold exactly 83 million duplicates by 1965. Ayesha (really articulated 'Assha'), subtitled The Return of She, who takes after She in the book, is an amazing and puzzling white sovereign who administers the African Amahagger individuals. Ayesha has enchantment controls and is undying, which makes She a dream experience book. Despite the fact that She and Ayesha were distributed almost twenty years separated, H. Rider Haggard stated that Ayesha was a decision to a two-section book, not a continuation. There is likewise a "prequel," She and Allan (1921). In the two books, an imaginary manager shows an original copy portrayal by Ludwig Horace Holly. This paper is principally concerned about the representation of feminine power and the representation of womanhood in Haggard’s Ayesha. Some questions will be investigated here. Can one consider Ayesha as a “conclusion” or a “sequel” to She since the whole novel replicates the same thematic and structural maneuvers of She? Does Haggard revive Ayesha, the “new woman”, in The Return of She respond to the threat to traditional gender roles? The findings of this study will be beneficial for the researchers, and all the undergraduate and postgraduate students of English department.

Comparative Literature is categorized among interdisciplinary studies and tries to bridge a gap between different and separated spheres of human studies. Adaptation studies is a subdivision of Comparative Literature that makes a bond between Literature and Cinema. Both Literature and Cinema are two different mediums or different means of expression. Each has its own language to convey meaning. While novel uses words, cinema uses visual and aural images to convey meaning. Linda Hutchean is a famous adaptation theorist and her theories are used by many critics. She categorizes four different parts for her theory. What? Who and Why? How? When and Where? Through these four main parts, she scrutinizes adaptation process. What, refers to the form, changes, gains and losses, using different tools to convey meaning. Who, refers to the adapter. She poses this question that in adaptation process who is the real adapter? Director, composer, screenplay writer or editor? Why, refers to the motivation of the adapter. She tries to find out different motivation of an adapter to adapt a work. When and Where, refers to the time and place of the adaptation process and its influence both during creation and reception process. In this thesis all of these four main parts of Hutcheon’s theory are scrutinized over 2013 adaptation ofThe Great Gatsbyby Buz Luhrmann. Similarities and differences between a novel and film are illuminated through this research. By determining differences between a film and a novel, hidden and unhidden aspects of the novel will be illuminated and this is a pleasure that a comparatist seeks.
