Abstract Background The intersphincteric plane (ISP) is a potential space between the external and the internal anal sphincters. About 90% of the perianal sepsis is caused by an obstruction of the ducts of anal glands with subsequent secondary bacterial infection. The imaging modalities used to diagnose perianal sepsis are the ultrasound via endoanal and transperineal routes and magnetic resonance imaging. Objective  The study aimed to identify the various patterns of the ISP sepsis and their incidence among our study group and to clarify the significance of ISP in the pathogenesis of anorectal abscesses and various types of perianal fistula tracts, to optimize the surgical management. Methods Retrospective descriptive study in which 57 patients with an ISP sepsis were evaluated with full medical history, clinical exam, and ultrasound; the final diagnosis was based on combining the results of ultrasound, digital rectal examination under anesthesia, and the operative results. Results The current study showed many patterns of the ISP sepsis and estimated the incidence of each pattern among our study group; such patterns could be fistula tracts, sinus tracts, abscesses, intersphincteric abscess with supralevator extension, sinus with abscess formation, fistula with abscess formation, distension of the ISP with free pus, and other complex patterns like horse abscess, abscess with transsphincteric sinus, and ISP fistula/sinus with transsphincteric branches. Conclusion Understanding the role of the ISP in the pathogenesis of anorectal abscesses and perianal fistula tracts can help in reaching the optimum way of management.

Location and hisiology of integumentary glands were investigated in six species of ground squirrels of the genus Spermophilus found in northwestern North America; S. columbianus, S. undulatus, S. richardsonii, S. tridecemlineatus, S. lateralis, and S. franklinii. Among these species, glands in oral, dorsal, and anal regions were structurally similar. Locations of oral and anal glands were identical but location of individual glands in dorsal-gland fields varied considerably. Gland development was greater in S. columbianus and S. undulatus and least in S. franklinii. Active scent marking was most frequent and extensive in S. columbianus and S. undulatus, less frequent in S. lateralis and S. tridecemlineatus, and absent in S. franklinii. In most instances, greeting behavior (which is focused on the mouth-corner oral-gland area) and the degree of sociality paralleled levels of scent marking. A hypothetical scheme of development or scent marking in relation to habitat and social organization is presented. This scheme fits, in general, classical interpretations of phylogeny.

Epimastigotes multiplying extracellularly and metacyclic trypomastigotes, stages that correspond to the cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi in the intestinal lumen of its insect vector, were consistently found in the lumen of the anal glands of opossums Didelphis marsupialis inoculated subcutaneously with infective feces of triatomid bugs.

Examination of museum specimens belonging to the cyphophthalmid Gondwanan family Pettalidae has rendered a collection of specimens placed in the new genus Karripurcellia. The genus includes three species, K.�peckorum, sp. nov., K. sierwaldae, sp. nov. and K. harveyi, sp. nov., from the Pemberton area in Western Australia. These are the first cyphophthalmid species found outside Queensland in Australia. Karripurcellia, gen. nov. is distinguished from other Australian pettalids by the lack of modifications in the anal plate, as well as the lack of the typical male anal glands of pettalids, sironids and the stylocellid genus Fangensis Rambla, 1994. Two of the species, K. peckorum, sp. nov. and K. sierwaldae, sp. nov., live sympatrically and have been collected in the same litter samples in one locality. The proposition of the new genus is accompanied by a cladistic analysis of all pettalid genera and most species within each genus, with the exception of the species-rich genus Rakaia Hirst, 1925. The cladistic analysis supports the monophyly of the Karripurcellia, gen. nov. species, but their sister-group relationships are unclear. However, the remaining Australian species cluster with the pettalids from New Zealand and South Africa, but not with Karripurcellia, sp. nov.
