This paper contributes to the theorization of ‘choice’ within sociological understanding of singlehood. Previous sociological research on singlehood has largely focused on the lives of heterosexual singles. A choice narrative permeates such literature, depicting singlehood as a celebratory story that brings about the potential to disrupt the couplehood culture in society. Based on in-depth interviews with 25 self-identified single gay men over the age of 50 in England, this article finds that although gay singles share similarities with straight singles, there are gay-specific features of singlehood that can be identified, in terms of the limit of ‘choice’. Although some older single gay men drew on the cultural discourse in the gay community, which decentres the conjugal couple, and claimed freedom of sexual exploration as a positive aspect of being single, there was also a strong sense that many older gay men's status of being single was shaped by a larger history, and hence, they were afforded no choice in choosing whether to be single or not. Taking these findings together, this paper suggests that there are ideological, historical and cultural factors that distinguish the lived experiences of single gay men as being different from those of heterosexual singles. This paper argues that although the discourse of ‘choice’ helps sociologists to understand that singlehood need not be understood as necessarily a negative experience, older gay men's experiences of singlehood caution that the choice narrative shall not mislead the analysis to focus singlehood merely on the individual level. Instead, singlehood needs to be understood as deeply socially and historically embedded.

The number of older athletes is growing with the aging of populations across the developed world. This article reviews studies from a variety of disciplines that focus specifically on the motives and experiences of older adults competing in physically demanding sports at events such as masters and veterans competitions in Australia or the Senior Olympics in North America. It is shown that the majority of research into this phenomenon has taken a quantitative approach or failed to consider older athletes’ experiences in the context of broader sociocultural discourses. Therefore, using the author’s research into the experiences of older Australian masters athletes as a catalyst, the need for and strength of sociological qualitative research in this area is discussed. The use of qualitative methods, such as in-depth interviews and observations, and interpretive analysis provided alternative ways of making sense of older adults and their relationship with competitive sport to what is typically found in the sport and aging literature.

In this article, the authors investigate an urgent problem for the Belgorod region related to the provision of the agro-industrial complex of the region with highly qualified and innovation-oriented personnel. The results of the sociological research carried out by the authors convincingly indicate the existence of a significant gap between the requirements of modern employers to workers and the quality of knowledge, skills and abilities that university graduates currently possess. The overly theoretical nature of the education received and its isolation from the realities of production activity are noted. To eliminate the gap that has arisen, according to the authors, it is possible only if the mechanisms of social partnership between education and business are actively developed. On the example of the Belgorod State Agrarian University named after V.Ya. Gorin, the authors of the article investigate a successful example of organizing such a partnership.

The business of private investigation has grown significantly in the past two decades. No longer can private investigating be considered an obscure form of private policing. Yet, despite the recent growth of interest in private policing, little research has been conducted on the services provided by private investigators. This article presents the results of an analysis of 33 in-depth interviews with Australian private investigators in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The article discusses their contemporary role in the context of providing justice, public policing and future regulatory challenges. The article extends the limited research on the services private investigators provide, including corporate fraud and financial investigations, risk advisory, and cyber and misconduct investigations. It identifies their backgrounds and education, and describes their clients. The study found that, contrary to expectations, to meet these new services, private investigators are now highly qualified academically and professionally. It was found that regulatory gaps have been created in the licensing of contemporary private investigators, and the use of private investigators allows clients to sidestep the justice system.

In the article on the base of sociological research assessment of migration situation in the Krasnoyarsk territory is given. Measures to improve migration situation are offered. Complex epidemiological situation in the region led to the choice of intelligence research. Non-random (spontaneous) types of selection were used. Questionnaire method of collecting information was used. Surveys were conducted from November to December 2020 and covered 400 residents of the region. As a result of the study, it turned out that old-timers are not particularly wor-ried about the arrival of foreign labor migrants. They are more concerned about the other aspects of migration. First of all, there is the outflow of highly qualified specialists and graduates of universities («brain drain»). Second, there is a migration of the local population. This is the opinion of both students and the adult population (not students). Based on these results, the author of the paper con-cludes that migration problems of the Krasnoyarsk territory lie mainly in the economic plane. Measures to retain the local population must be strengthened, especially by creating jobs.

Sociological research has illuminated the importance of mentoring relationships, especially in regard to education. The literature has also shown that mentoring can help disadvantaged students access social and cultural capital that aids their academic achievement. Furthermore, mentoring relationships are more successful between mentees and mentors of the same race, class, or gender. However, there is little research about queer students’ experiences with mentoring relationships in regard to education. In an effort to expand the literature on mentoring relationships and queer students I conducted ten in-depth interviews with queer identified undergraduate students at a large university in the Southeast United States. Using these interviews, I examined respondents’ perception of their social exclusion, coping through resiliency, and prosocial behavior through mentoring others. I found that being openly queer posed an identity-based risk for students’ ability to access mentoring relationships, in turn this risk increased their perception of resiliency and prosocial behavior.

Abstract After Lockdown - 2020, the unmanned navigation system began to be more actively developed. In a pandemic, it became clear that the modernization of ships, namely the automation of most operations, would reduce the size of the crew. This will reduce the number of jobs; on the other hand, this will ensure safety, which, today, is a priority. In addition, the introduction of a system of unmanned navigation will require a revision of the professions of seafarers, there will be a demand for highly qualified personnel, which will contribute to the emergence of new specialties in higher educational institutions. The sources for writing the article were the regulatory legal acts regulating the activities of the Maritime Law and the data of companies working in this area, taken from open Internet resources over the past 5 years. The article provides an overview of the unmanned navigation system market as a separate segment of the shipbuilding market that has significant prospects. A SWOT analysis of the implementation of the unmanned navigation system was carried out, the opinions of independent experts were considered. During the study, it can be argued that all economically developed countries are trying to switch to a system of unmanned navigation, but the main limiting factor for all is the issues of legal regulation.
