In the past decade, expressways have been developed rapidly in China. It is evident that a number of opened expressways generated promoting effects on regional economic development. Most existing studies tend to assess the effects in a qualitative way. The purpose of this study was to develop quantitative methods to evaluate the economic benefits of expressway projects during the operational period. The benefits discussed include user benefits (reduced vehicle operating costs, time savings, and safety benefits), which are the direct effects of the expressway projects. The estimation of user benefits is carried out on the basis of well-defined quantitative methods. Development benefits, which are the indirect effects of the expressway projects, were also examined. Their indirect nature makes them inherently more difficult to analyze quantitatively. A comparative analysis method was developed to tackle the problem. These methodologies were applied to a case study of the Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway in Zhejiang Province, one of the fastest-growing provinces in China in economic activity. The estimation results show that, since its opening in December 1996, the expressway has generated significant user benefits in the region. Statistical data have provided some evidence that the expressway promoted the region's economic development by improving the investment environment, promoting exchange and circulation of commodities, providing convenient transportation for tourists, and promoting development in small towns and urbanization.

Following the 2015 publication and revision of the 2008 National Ecological Functional Division, China, in 2017, added 240 counties (cities, districts, and banners) to its national key ecological functional zone system. Ecological functional zones, in practice, are often caught in a dilemma between environmental protection and economic development, with actions aimed at the promotion of locally-based economic advances frequently conflicting with the goals of ecological functional divisions. To investigate this dilemma, the paper selected Tiamitcheen County in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, a key ecological function zone, as the site for a field investigation, case study. The primary methodologies applied in this study included a questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews. Based on the observation of three main reasons for the dilemma between environmental protection and economic development, the author proposed that ecological functional zones should be further subdivided based on the National Ecological Functional Division according to the zones’ respective characteristics at the local level. More efforts should also go into better specifying the scope of ecological “red lines”, and to the demarcation of the boundaries of ecological functional core zones, buffer zones, and experimental zones. This would help in the formulation of local development planning, while at the same time increasing the support directed to ecological protection zones. In addition, “differentiated” and “greening” zoning assessment mechanisms should also be fully implemented, whereby different assessment factors and weights are established according to the characteristics of the different functional zones. An expanded array of economic indicators should also be delineated, which more specifically indicates the differences between ecological functional zones and other functional zones. This would, via a “differentiated” and “green” assessment system, help to ease the conflicts arising between local governments’ efforts at both economic promotion and ecological protection. Within ecological functional zones, it would also encourage local governments to break through the need to adhere strictly to efforts at economic promotion so as to ensure ecological security.

Abstract. Iskandar BS, Iskandar J, Partasasmita R. 2019. Hobby and business on trading birds: Case study in bird market of Sukahaji, Bandung, West Java and Splendid, Malang, East Java (Indonesia). Biodiversitas 20: 1316-1332. Bird species have various ecological and socio-economic-cultural functions for the human being. Ecologically, birds have beneficial functions in the ecosystem, such as helping plant pollinators, spreading plant seeds, participating in controlling agricultural pests, and monitoring environmental changes. Meanwhile, bird functions for the social-economic and culture of the community among them are known as sources of protein food, mystical functions, sources of material stories, sources of inspiration to make songs, craft materials, the source of gene pool, and become pets and trade animals. With the rise of the urban population hobby of raising birds and also the development of various bird contest activities in the urban, causing of the bird trade is very widespread in urban areas, such as in bird markets. In some cities in Indonesia, various bird markets have been popularly known for a long time. This study aimed to elucidate species diversity, folk classification, bird populations, bird prices, constraints to bird trade, and the positive and negative effects of bird trade in the urban bird market. The research method used a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods with the ethnoecological approach. The results of this study showed that from a survey of 60 bird traders in the bird market of Sukahaji, Bandung, and Splendid, Malang, a total of 160 bird species, representing 38 families were documented. Among them, 10 species representing 7 families recorded as protected bird by law in Indonesia, based on recent government regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of Republic of Indonesian No.106/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/12/2018. A total of 2,950 individuals were recorded in Sukahaji; while in Splendid were recorded 3,558 individuals. Prices of birds that are traded varied greatly depending on the species and characteristics of birds. It has been revealed that bird trade in the bird market has been various economic benefits for many people. However, due to the bird trade in bird markets in the city which has not been properly managed, the sustainability system of the bird trade in the city is very alarming caused of many factors, including decreasing of bird population over time in rural ecosystem as main supply of urban bird trading in the bird markets. Therefore, bird trading in the bird markets must be properly managed based on the sustainable development program concept, namely pro-economic, pro-social, and pro-environment.

The high interest in coffee consumption in Indonesia is not only a coffee-producing country, as quite a lot of consumers. Indonesia was ranked 4th as the world's largest coffee producer in 2016 after Brazil, Vietnam, and Colombia. Of the many types of coffee, in general, there are two types of coffee marketed in Indonesia, namely Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee. This research was conducted using quantitative methods with a population and sample of 112 respondents. The data analysis method used is binomial logistic regression analysis. The results showed that the quality of brand image, product price, and product quality are factors that determine repurchase decisions on Kopi Petani Nusantara in the archipelago, which shows 57.1% to be the determining factor while the rest is determined by other factors. This happens because of the better brand image of a product, so buyers will make repeat purchases to meet their needs, both in terms of Recognition, Reputation, Affinity, and Domain.

In the process of people’s development, many resources in natural resources provide convenience and help for people’s survival and development, and forest is an important part of ecological balanced development. In the process of economic development, forest resources can also bring people a lot of economic benefits. People develop regional forestry economy by planting trees with economic value. Asset assessment of forests can better promote the development of forestry economy and help people better use and manage resources. During the process of forestry economic development, the technology of asset evaluation established on the basis of BP neural network enriches the theoretical content of forestry economic development to a certain extent and provides a more solid theoretical basis for development. At the same time, the qualitative and quantitative methods are combined to ensure that the data are more accurate and the key influencing factors can be better analyzed. Based on the analysis of the relevant research results, this paper takes some trees of the same growth year as the object of study. Using BP neural network to analyze the factors that will change the overall value of forest resources, a special BP neural network model belongs to forestry and economic development is established.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain how proponents of biodiversity offsetting have sought to produce an ecologically defensible mechanism for reconciling economic development and biodiversity conservation. Design/methodology/approach The paper analyses a case study biodiversity offsetting mechanism in New South Wales, Australia. Michel Callon’s framing and overflowing metaphor is used to explain how accounting devices are brought into the mechanism, to (re)frame a space of calculability and address anxieties expressed by conservationists about calculations of net loss/gain of biodiversity. Findings The analysis shows that the offsetting mechanism embeds a form of accounting for biodiversity that runs counter to the prevailing dominant anthropocentric approach. Rather than accounting for the biodiversity of a site in terms of the economic benefits it provides to humans, the mechanism accounts for biodiversity in terms of its ecological value. This analysis, therefore, reveals a form of accounting for biodiversity that uses numbers to provide valuations of biodiversity, but these numbers are ecological numbers, not economic numbers. So this is a calculative, and also ecocentric, approach to accounting for, and valuing, biodiversity. Originality/value This paper contributes to the extant literature on accounting for biodiversity by revealing a novel conceptualisation of the reconciliation of economic development and biodiversity conservation, producing an ecologically defensible form of sustainable development. The paper also makes a methodological contribution by showing how Callon’s framing and overflowing metaphor can be used to enable the kind of interdisciplinary engagement needed for researchers to address sustainable development challenges.

Current supply chain methods are having difficulties in resolving problems arising from the lack of trust in supply chains. The root reason lies in two challenges brought to the traditional mechanism: self-interests of supply chain members and information asymmetry in production processes. Blockchain is a promising technology to address these problems. The key objective of this paper is to present qualitative analysis for blockchain in supply chain as the decision-making framework to implement this new technology. The analysis method used Val IT business case framework, validated by the expert judgements. The further study needs to be elaborated by either the existing organization that use blockchain or assessment by the organization that will use blockchain to improve their supply chain management.
