Noise Issues of Concrete-Pavement Texturing

The second phase of a project researching the texture and noise characteristics of portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements was sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and FHWA. The team of Marquette University and HNTB Corporation measured and analyzed the noise and texture parameters of 57 test sites in Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Conclusions pertaining to tire-and-pavement noise were drawn using data from several types of acoustical tests, including objective noise measurements (exterior and interior), subjective noise evaluations, and a prominent frequency analysis. Texture parameters of all test sites were measured with the road surface analyzer (ROSAN). ROSAN texture measurements proved invaluable in analyzing why different textures exhibited different noise characteristics. Both uniform and random transverse tining provide higher interior and exterior noise levels than skewed or longitudinal tining. Transverse tining, even in some random-spaced textures, can cause a discrete frequency or whine. As the depth and width of tining increased, so did the noise levels. Randomly spaced patterns are sensitive to spacing. Ground PCC pavement exhibited no discrete frequencies. Recommendations include the need for better quality control over tining and a wet-pavement-accident study of longitudinal tining. If noise considerations are paramount, longitudinal tining is recommended. If texture is paramount, skewed tining is recommended. If a skew is not possible, then carefully constructed random transverse is recommended.

Twelve portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP) test sections were constructed to compare with standard PCCP and asphaltic concrete pavement (ACP) to quantify the effects of the pavement surface texture on noise, safety, and winter maintenance. Asphalt pavements studied included a Strategic Highway Research Program asphalt, stone matrix asphalt (SMA), and Wisconsin standard asphalt. A dependency between the pavement textures and their noise characteristics was observed. Noise measurements indicated that uniformly transverse tined PCCP created dominant noise frequencies that were audible adjacent to the road and inside the test vehicles. Careful design and construction of transversely tined PCCP can reduce tire-road noise. No significant acoustical advantages of open-graded asphalts over the standard dense asphalt were found. The results of this research are preliminary and have not yet been approved by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Council on Research.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the variation in traffic equivalent noise levels as distance from the road intersection increases. To achieve this objective, traffic volume and equivalent noise level were monitored at 40 signalized intersections in Amman, the capital of Jordan. An integrated sound level meter (ISLM) was used to measure 1 min equivalent noise level along all approaches of the evaluated intersections. A total of 3326 noise measurements were performed. The collected data were analyzed to evaluate the variation of noise levels as distance from the intersection increases. The results indicated that equivalent noise levels were significantly affected by distance from the signal stop line. The equivalent noise levels at distances 50 and 100 m from the intersection were found to be 1.5 to 2.0 dB less than those at 0 m. While at 200, 250, and 300 m from the intersection, the monitored equivalent noise levels were found to be 3.8 to 4 dB higher than that at 0 m. At distances farther than 250 m, the measured equivalent noise levels tend to keep constant value of equivalent noise level as distance increased.Key words: noise, traffic, intersection, environment, pollution.

Tire-road noise levels for Ohio Department of Transportation pavement types were investigated to provide an additional criterion for pavement selection in noise-sensitive areas. Tire-road noise measurements were conducted in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization’s statistical pass-by method (ISO 11819-1)—the first use of this standard in the United States. A statistical pass-by index (SPBI) was determined for each pavement test, which enabled the ranking of the pavement types according to tire-road noise levels, as well as a means of comparing results with other studies conducted according to the standard. There was a difference of 6.7 dB between the lowest (open-graded asphalt) and the highest (random-transverse-grooved concrete) SPBI for all of the pavements measured. Additionally, the data were analyzed to produce reference energy mean emission levels for future use with traffic-noise prediction modeling.

The article gives an analysis of the noise characteristics of modern types and systems of railway, monorail and urban land rail transport. The requirements of external, Russian and industry normative documents to the permissible noise levels in the residential area and on the land rail transport are considered. The results of the instrumental noise measurements on the route of the Moscow monorail transport system and in laboratory conditions are given. An overview of the best available technologies for noise protection in transport is presented. The measures of reducing the noise generated by monorail current collection devices are proposed.

A study was initiated by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to investigate the effects of spot diamond grinding on the performance and material properties of concrete pavement. A field survey was conducted to assess the conditions of selected spot-diamond-ground PCC pavement sites. Pavement distress data were collected on control and spot-ground sections on 22 highways and 34 locations in Wisconsin. In addition, microsurveys were completed for each of the spot-ground sections. Utilizing the pavement distress index, values and results of the microsurvey comparisons are made between sections that were spot-ground and those that were not. Conclusions are drawn concerning the effects of spot grinding on the performance of the concrete pavements; no practical differences were found between the spot-ground and control sections.

Gunung Tugel is an area that located Patikraja Region, Southern Banyumas. Thetopography of the area is mostly mountainous with a slope that varies from flat to steep. Thiscondition makes to many areas of this region potentially landslide. In 2015, a landslideoccurred in Jalan Gunung Tugel. The Landslide occurred along 70 meters on the half of theroad and causing traffic Patikraja-Purwokerto disturbed. To repair the damage of the road andavoid further landslides, necessary to analyze slope stability. This study is to analyze landslidereinforcement that occurred at Gunung Tugel and divides into 3 step. The first step is fieldinvestigation to determine the condition of the location and dimensions of landslides. Thesecond step is to know the soil parameters and analyzes data were obtained from the field. Andthe final step is analyzed of the landslide reinforcement by using data obtained from thepreceding step. In this research, will be applied three variations of reinforcement i.e. retainingwall, pile foundation and combine both of pile foundations and retaining wall. Slope stabilityanalysis was conducted using limit equilibrium method. Based on the analysis conducted onthe three variations reinforcement, combine both of pile foundations and retaining wall morerecommended. Application of and combine both of pile foundations and retaining wall is themost realistic option in consideration of ease of implementation at the field. From thecalculations have been done, in order to achieve stable conditions need retaining wall withdimensions of 2 meters high with 2,5 meters of width. DPT is supported by two piles of eachcross-section with 0.3 meters of diameter along 10 meters with 1-meter in space. Abstrak: Gunung Tugel adalah salah satu daerah yang terletak di Kecamatan PatikrajaKabupaten Banyumas bagian selatan. Kondisi topografi daerah tersebut sebagian besar berupapegunungan dengan kemiringan yang bervariasi dari landai sampai curam. Hal inimenyebabkan banyak daerah di wilayah Gunung Tugel yang berpotensi terjadi bencana tanahlongsor. Pada tahun 2015, peristiwa longsor kembali terjadi di ruas Jalan Gunung Tugel.Kelongsoran yang terjadi sepanjang 70 meter pada separuh badan jalan tersebut menyebabkanarus lalu lintas patikraja-purwokerto menjadi terganggu. Untuk memperbaiki kerusakan jalandan mencegah kelongsoran kembali, diperlukan analisis perkuatan tanah terhadap lerengtersebut. Studi analisis penanggulangan kelongsoran jalan yang terjadi di Gunung Tugel inidilakukan dengan tiga tahapan. Tahapan pertama adalah investigasi lapangan untukmengetahui kondisi lokasi dan dimensi longsor serta mengambil sampel tanah di lapangan.Tahap kedua adalah melakukan pengujian parameter tanah dan analisis data yang diperolehdari lapangan. Tahapan yang terakhir adalah analisis penanggulangan longsor denganmenggunakan data yang diperoleh dari tahapan sebelumnya. Pada penelitan ini, akanditerapkan tiga variasi perkuatan lereng yaitu dinding penahan tanah (DPT), turap dan DPTyang dikombinasikan dengan pondasi tiang. Analisis stabilitas lereng dilakukan dengan metodekeseimbangan batas. Berdasarkan hasil analisis yang dilakukan terhadap ketiga variasiperkuatan, DPT dengan kombinasi tiang pancang lebih direkomendasikan. Penerapan DPTyang dikombinasikan dengan minipile merupakan pilihan yang paling realistis denganpertimbangan tingkat kemudahan pelaksanaan di lapangan. Dari perhitungan yang telahdilakukan, untuk mencapai kondisi stabil diperlukan DPT dengan dimensi tinggi 2 meterdengan lebar bawah 2,5 meter. DPT tersebut ditopang oleh dua tiang tiap penampangmelintang dengan diameter 0,3 meter sepanjang 10 meter dengan jarak antar tiang 1 meter.kata kunci: tanah longsor, perkuatan tanah, metode keseimbangan batas

Transferring sick premature infants between hospitals increases the risk of severe brain injury, potentially linked to the excessive exposure to noise, vibration and driving-related accelerations. One method of reducing these levels may be to travel along smoother and quieter roads at an optimal speed, however this requires mass data on the effect of roads on the environment within ambulances. An app for the Android operating system has been developed for the purpose of recording vibration, noise levels, location and speed data during ambulance journeys. Smartphone accelerometers were calibrated using sinusoidal excitation and the microphones using calibrated pink noise. Four smartphones were provided to the local neonatal transport team and mounted on their neonatal transport systems to collect data. Repeatability of app recordings was assessed by comparing 37 journeys, made during the study period, along an 8.5 km single carriageway. The smartphones were found to have an accelerometer accurate to 5% up to 55 Hz and microphone accurate to 0.8 dB up to 80 dB. Use of the app was readily adopted by the neonatal transport team, recording more than 97,000 km of journeys in 1 year. To enable comparison between journeys, the 8.5 km route was split into 10 m segments. Interquartile ranges for vehicle speed, vertical acceleration and maximum noise level were consistent across all segments (within 0.99 m . s−1, 0.13 m · s−2 and 1.4 dB, respectively). Vertical accelerations registered were representative of the road surface. Noise levels correlated with vehicle speed. Android smartphones are a viable method of accurate mass data collection for this application. We now propose to utilise this approach to reduce potential harmful exposure, from vibration and noise, by routing ambulances along the most comfortable roads.

Excessive noise levels are a prevalent issue in food processing operations and, although there have been numerous studies on occupational noise, no single study has used a concurrent mixed-methods approach. Employing this study design allows for an understanding of the level of convergence (similarity) between measured noise levels and workers’ attitudes and perceptions towards noise. This, in turn, allows for the identification of potential challenges with respect to the implementation of hearing conservation efforts. In this study, spot noise measurements were collected using a sound level meter. One-on-one interviews were conducted with workers to determine attitudes and perceptions towards noise in their workplaces. Subsequently, the results of the noise measurements (quantitative data) were integrated with the survey responses (qualitative data) to identify convergence. The majority of the noise measurements were found to exceed 85 dBA—the criterion mandated by the local occupational health and safety legislation. Although all study participants felt that it was noisy in the workplace, a large proportion of respondents indicated that the noise was not bothersome. With workers’ perception being contradictory to the measured noise levels, it is a challenge to implement hearing conservation measures unless changes are made to raise the awareness of the risks associated with excessive noise exposure.

Roads are a central element of transportation systems, enabling economic and social development, fostering territorial cohesion and facilitating the movement of people and cargo. Governments have devoted significant financial resources to developing and improving their road networks, and are still facing increasing pressure to ensure proper maintenance and payments to those concessionaires that developed roads under public–private partnership arrangements. As in other sectors, digitalization is paving a way towards significant changes in the way we build, operate and finance infrastructure. These changes will have a profound impact on the entire life cycle of an infrastructure, from the design and/or construction stage, to its operation and transfer. This article provides an overall overview of the main technological developments which are, or could impact road infrastructure in the short, medium and long term. For each technological development identified in our research, we analyse the potential impact on Capex, Opex and revenues as well as their level of maturity and expected lifetime for mass adoption, and also the main bottlenecks or barriers to implementation. Additionally, we explore potential savings on investment (capex) and operational costs (opex) and increase in revenues, using data from the Portuguese highway companies. Savings can represent almost 30% of capex and opex. Overall, savings and increases in revenues can represent an impact similar to 20–40% of current revenues. The findings show that digitalization and technological development in the road sector can significantly impact the economic performance of roads, thus enhancing the value of money for the society. The findings also show that there might be some excess capacity of road systems once autonomous vehicles achieve higher market penetration. However, there are still some relevant legal, regulatory, institutional and technological and economic barriers that are slowing down the digitalization process.
