Niobium and aluminium were electrodeposited at 200 °C under argon atmosphere onto vitreous carbon from inorganic chloroaluminate melts (AlCl3+NaCl) with added niobium. Niobium was introduced into the electrolyte by anodic dissolution of metallic niobium or by chemical dissolution of Nb2O5 in a melt of equimolar AlCl3+NaCl mixture. The processes of deposition/dissolution onto/from vitreous carbon were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Characterization of the obtained deposits was done by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The only observed reduction processes on the working electrode in the potential window from 1.000 V to – 1.000 V vs. Al, were individual niobium deposition and codeposition of niobium and aluminium with Al-Nb alloys formation. Electrodeposition of niobium from the chloroaluminate melt with added niobium (V) oxide seems to start at around – 0.100 V vs. Al and at about – 0.200 V vs. Al aluminium starts codepositing. During the codeposition Nb-Al alloys were formed. Niobium deposition starting potential from the electrolyte with niobium added by anodic dissolution starts at 0.100 V vs. Al, and aluminium codeposition starting potential was at around – 0.025 V vs. Al, followed by Nb/Al alloy formation.

Contrary to the widely accepted hypothesis that it is not possible, aluminium underpotential deposition (UPD) onto zirconium from a low temperature (200, 250 and 300?C) equimolar chloroaluminate melt was recorded. Furthermore, it was shown that aluminium UPD facilitates alloy formation between the deposited aluminium monolayer and the zirconium substrate by interdiffusion. The aluminium/zirconium alloys formed at the temperatures substantially lower than those needed for thermal preparation of the same alloys were: Al3Zr2 and Al3Zr. Experimental techniques used were linear sweep voltammetry, potential step, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used for characterization of obtained electrode surfaces.

The possibilities of metallurgical preparation of 40Nb-60Al and 15W-85Al intermetallic compounds (in at.%) by plasma arc melting (PAM) and vacuum induction melting (VIM) were studied. Both methods allow easy preparation of Nb–Al alloys; however, significant evaporation of Al was observed during the melting, which affected the resulting chemical composition. The preparation of W–Al alloys was more problematic because there was no complete re-melting of W during PAM and VIM. However, the combination of PAM and VIM allowed the preparation of W–Al alloy without any non-melted parts. The microstructure of Nb–Al alloys consisted of Nb2Al and NbAl3 intermetallic phases, and W–Al alloys consisted mainly of needle-like WAl4 intermetallic phase and Al matrix. The effects of melting conditions on chemical composition, homogeneity, and microstructure were determined. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine melting and phase transformation temperatures of the prepared alloys.

Purpose – The paper aims to provide new observations about static strain ageing in aluminium (Al) alloys which are widely used in structural applications. Design/methodology/approach – The present work aims to provide theoretical and practical information to industries or researchers who may be interested in the effect of static strain ageing on mechanical properties of Al alloys. The data are sorted into the following sections: introduction, materials and experimental procedure, results and discussion and conclusions. Findings – Tensile strength, proof strength (0.2 per cent) and percentage elongation measurement were used to investigate the effect of strain ageing on the mechanical properties. Wear tests were performed by sliding the pin specimens, which were prepared from as-received, solution heat-treated, deformed and undeformed specimens after ageing, on high-speed tool steel (64 HRC). It is concluded that the variations in ageing time improved the strength and wear resistance of the 6063 Al alloy; however, a plastically deformed solution-treated alloy has higher strength and wear resistance than undeformed specimens for different ageing times at 180°C. Practical implications – A very useful source of information for industries using or planning to produce Al alloys. Originality/value – This paper fulfils an identified resource need and offers practical help to the industries.

Amperometric and potentiometric probes were employed for the detection and characterization of reactive sites on the 2098-T351 Al-alloy (AA2098-T351) using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Firstly, the probe of concept was performed on a model Mg-Al galvanic pair system using SECM in the amperometric and potentiometric operation modes, in order to address the responsiveness of the probes for the characterization of this galvanic pair system. Next, these sensing probes were employed to characterize the 2098-T351 alloy surface immersed in a saline aqueous solution at ambient temperature. The distribution of reactive sites and the local pH changes associated with severe localized corrosion (SLC) on the alloy surface were imaged and subsequently studied. Higher hydrogen evolution, lower oxygen depletion and acidification occurred at the SLC sites developed on the 2098-T351 Al-alloy.

This paper describes direct cladding of magnesium (Mg) and aluminum (Al) alloys using a tandem horizontal twin roll caster that has three pairs of upper and lower rolls. Manufacturing conditions that are appropriate for fabricating Al/Mg and Al/Mg/Al cladded material were investigated. The surface condition of the cladded cast strip was examined. An electron probe micro analyzer was used to observe the interface between Al alloy and Mg alloy. The thickness of the mixed layer of Al and Mg alloy was 15μm, and how the materials were connected was clarified. Microscopic observation and backscattered electron analysis were used to investigate the cladding mechanisms of the Al and Mg alloy layers. Average hardness was determined using the Vickers hardness test at the Al layer and at the diffused layer between Mg and Al alloys. Cladding of Al/Mg alloy and A/Mg/Al alloy was possible using a tandem twin-roll caster. In addition, Al3Mg2 and Al12Mg17 phase precipitation at the interface of the Al and Mg alloys was confirmed during direct cladding from molten metals.

The effects of the duration of potentiostatic anodizing on the corrosion resistance and surface morphology of anodic oxide films formed on Mg-Al alloy (AZ91) in 1 M NaOH were investigated. With the formation of an anodic film, the current density decreased gradually, started to stabilize at 300 s, and was relatively constant at 600 s. These results may be related to the increased time for catalysis of the active dissolution reaction, which not only enlarges the area covered by the anodic film, but also produces a more coherent, thicker film. The reference corrosion potentials of the anodic oxide film for AZ91 shifted in the noble direction with time. In general, the corrosion resistance characteristics were improved with anodizing time.

2024-T6 Al alloy sheet s were modified by bis-[triethoxysilylpropyl] tetrasulfide (BTESPT) silane film to improve the corrosion resistance. Fourier-Transform Reflection Absorption (FTIR-RA) spectroscopy was used for structural characterization of BTESPT silane film formed on surface of the sheet. Potentiodynamic polarization and immersion test in 3.5% NaCl solution were used for evaluating the corrosion performances of the silane film. The results showed that the film formed after curing at 120 °C for 40 min was cross-linked through Si-O-Si and that it was covered on the entire surface of the sheet. The content of elements S and Si on the Al2CuMg particles is a little higher that of on the matrix. The strong peak at 1032 cm-1 indicated that the film was linked to the sheet by Si-O-Al. Compared to the untreated case, the corrosion current density of the sheet treated with the silane film was reduced by close to 2 orders. Treatment of BTESPT silane can provide about 670 h protection of corrosion for the sheet in 3.5% NaCl water solution.

Abstract AA5754Al alloy is widely used in industry. However, as in the case of all Al alloys, the 5xxx series Al alloys cannot be easily joined through fusion welding techniques. To address this problem, in this study, the effect of double-sided friction stir welding at various tool rotational speeds (450, 710, and 900 rpm), feeding rates (40, 50, and 80 mm × min-1), and tool tilt angles (0°, 1°, 2°) on the welding parameters and mechanical and microstructural characteristics of AA5754 Al alloy was determined. Tensile strength tests and microhardness tests were performed to examine the mechanical properties of the welded specimens. The microstructures of the welded zone were examined by obtaining optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images. The tensile test results indicated that the specimens exhibited the highest welding performance of 95.17 % at a tool rotational speed, feed rate, and tool tilt angle of 450 rpm, 50 mm × min-1 and 1°, respectively.
