In order to help orthopedists, evaluate the morphological characteristics of the acetabulum of patients with osteoarthritis, a 3-dimensional (3D) acetabular morphologic parameters measurements software dedicated to the hip was developed. The system includes three modules: 1) Identify the anterior pelvic plane (APP) of the pelvis model; 2) Identify the circular rim of the acetabular wall; 3) Automatically and interactively measure the 3D morphological parameters of the dysplastic acetabulum. The automatic parameter measurement function of this software could fast and accurately measure the 3D morphological parameters of the dysplastic acetabulum. These automatically measured parameters were close to those measured manually with error generally less than 2mm. This software was used to measure acetabular morphological parameters in 61 patients. Two types of dysplastic acetabula were identified by the thickness of the medial wall on the lower margin of the acetabulum Tb: type I was a thin acetabulum (35 cases, Tb≤10.0 mm) and type II was a thick acetabulum (26 cases, Tb >10.0 mm). the result of the acetabular morphological characteristic analysis, it can be found that the thickness of the medial wall is an important morphological characteristic for the THA preoperative surgical planning, and the thickened medial wall could be a misleading factor for the suboptimal placement of the cup.

Reading the excellent article by Drs. Murphy and Oski, "Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia (CDA)",1 which further defines type II, produced a sense of deja vu. In the 1950s, nonspherocytic, hemolytic anemias (HNHA) were categorized as type I and II based on the in vitro autohemolysis test.2 This group of anemias has subsequently been demonstrated to be due to a series of enzymatic abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism.3 In CDA, the morphological characteristics which define types I, II, and III probably reflect nuclear rather than cytoplasmic abnormalities.

Black-winged myna (Acridotheres melanopterus) is an endemic bird of Java and Bali, currently critically endangered based on International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN) since 2010. The study about black-winged myna morphological characteristic is important because it has two relatives with almost identical features of morphology. The information can be used as a basis in breeding management to avoid hybridization. The study aims to determine the morphological characteristics of black-winged myna. The sample selection was done using purposive sampling method. Data was taken from 36 black-winged mynas with >=2 years old. Data collection was done by measuring and documenting every morphological feature of the observed body parts. Documentation of the wings, back, chest, head and sides of the body are taken from each bird using a digital camera. The results showed that almost the entire body of black-winged myna covered by white feather, black feather only present on the cover of the wings and tail. Black eyes surrounded by yellow skin without feather. The beak is orange with blackish parts around the nostrils. The bird has yellow legs with three fingers at the front and one finger at the back. The average body length of this bird is 22.5 cm, weight 89.02 g, width 5.98 cm, body circumference 14.36 cm and wingspan 38.49 cm.

This paper studied at the problem of visual simulation of astronaut fling outside in the cabin. Firstly, according to morphological characteristics of the human’s body, we used SolidWorks to construct the simplified geometric model of astronaut. Then we made the model of astronaut carried out the 3-dimensional real-time flight animation based on OpenGL by view transformation and model transformation in VC++ environment.

AbstractRecent studies have evidenced that the anatomical structure now known as the myodural bridge (MDB) connects the suboccipital musculature to the cervical spinal dura mater (SDM). In humans, the MDB passes through both the posterior atlanto-occipital and the posterior atlanto-axial interspaces. The present authors suggest that the MDB has important physiological functions in humans. The existence of the MDB in various mammals, including flying birds (Rock pigeons and Gallus domesticus) has been previously validated. Gentoo penguins are marine birds, able to make 450 dives per day, reaching depths of up to 660 feet. Gentoo penguins are also the world’s fastest diving birds. The present study was therefore carried out to investigate the existence and characteristics of the MDB in Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua), a non-flying, marine bird that can dive. While foraging, this penguin is able to reach speeds of up to 22 miles per hour. For this study, six Gentoo penguin specimens were dissected to observe the existence and composition of their MDB. Histological staining was also performed to analyze the anatomic relationships and characteristic of the MDB in the Gentoo penguin. In this study, it was found that the suboccipital musculature in the Gentoo penguin consists of the rectus capitis dorsalis minor (RCDmi) muscle and rectus capitis dorsalis major (RCDma) muscle. Dense connective tissue fibers were observed connecting these two suboccipital muscles to the spinal dura mater (SDM). This dense connective tissue bridge consists of primarily type I collagen fibers. Thus, this penguin’s MDB appears to be analogous to the MDB previously observed in humans. The present study evidences that the MDB not only exists in penguins but it also has unique features that distinguishes it from that of flying birds. Thus, this study advances the understanding of the morphological characteristics of the MDB in flightless, marine birds.

It is proposed to use the methods of fractal analysis to determine the morphological characteristics of the structure of structural materials. The questions of fractal aggregation of particles in the process of crystallization of ductile iron are considered, an austenitic-graphite cell is used as an elementary particle. Based on the mesh method, images of the microstructure of ductile irons are analysed and conclusions are drawn about the similarity of the nature of the process of their crystallization and fractal aggregation of particles. Based on the calculated fractal dimensions, a theory is proposed to explain the features of the crystallization process of ductile irons.

To create a database and systematize the seeds of samples of small-seeded crops, it is necessary to determine the patterns of influence of morphological parameters on their physical and mechanical properties. The development of the latest technologies and technical devices for cleaning and separation is possible due to the understanding of the characteristic morphological parameters for each of the small-seeded crops. The aim of the research is to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the seed material of small-seeded crops (mustard, flax, ryegrass, rapeseed), necessary to increase the efficiency of their cleaning and separation processes. To achieve this goal, a plan of experimental research was developed, which provided for the determination of physical and mechanical parameters of seeds of small-seeded crops, namely: indicators that characterize the flowability of seeds (angle of natural bias); frictional properties of seeds (static coefficient of friction); porosity (density) and density; size and mass characteristics of seeds (length, width, thickness, effective diameter, weight of 1000 seeds). It is established that the physical and mechanical properties of seeds of small-seeded crops are greatly influenced by its humidity. With increasing humidity, the performance of the test material increases. This is due to the fact that with increasing humidity, the shape of the seed almost turns into a spherical, which, in turn, leads to an increase in the curvature of the surface and reduce the points of contact between the seeds. As a result, the angle of natural inclination increases. The coefficient of friction of seeds of small-seeded crops depends on the roughness of the friction surface and decreases with increasing humidity. This is due to the fact that with increasing humidity decreases the forces of molecular attraction of the seed coat to the surface of the material. Seed density increases with increasing humidity. From this we can conclude that the absorption of moisture by the investigated material increases the total weight of the seed, and as a result - increases its specific weight.

Breast cancer accounts for almost one in four cancer diagnoses in women. Studies in breast cancer patients have identified several molecular markers, indicators of aggressiveness, which help toward more individual therapeutic approaches. In triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) overexpression is associated with increased metastatic potential and worst survival rates. Specifically, abnormal EGFR activation leads to altered matrix metalloproteinases’ (MMPs) expression and, hence, extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, resulting in induced migration and invasion. The use of matrix substrates for cell culture gives the opportunity to mimic the natural growth conditions of the cells and their microenvironment, as well as cell–cell and cell–matrix interactions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of EGFR inhibition, estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) and different matrix substrates [type I collagen and fibronectin (FN)] on the functional properties, expression of MMPs and cell morphology of ERβ-positive TNBC cells and shERβ ones. Our results highlight EGFR as a crucial regulator of the expression and activity levels of MMPs, while ERβ emerges as a mediator of MMP7 and MT1-MMP expression. In addition, the EGFR/ERβ axis impacts the adhesion and invasion potential of breast cancer cells on collagen type I. Images obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM) from cultures on the different matrix substrates revealed novel observations regarding various structures of breast cancer cells (filopodia, extravesicles, tunneling nanotubes, etc.). Moreover, the significant contribution of EGFR and ERβ in the morphological characteristics of these cells is also demonstrated, hence highlighting the possibility of dual pharmacological targeting.

The hallucal sesamoid bones (HSBs), having an important role in reducing load per unit area on the first metatarsal head, can be injured commonly which also affected the first metatarsophalangeal joint and the surrounding structure. Meanwhile, differences among each HSB type may be a major factor affecting the occurrence and development of HV. So far, many researchers had learned that there are three different conditions in hallucal sesamoid bone affecting the choice of clinical surgery corresponding to different solutions in clinic. Thus, it is necessary to study the anatomical morphological characteristics of the HSB which can be helpful in clinical diagnosis and treatment, especially hallux valgus (HV). 150 X-ray and three-dimensional (3D) computed tomographic (CT) images consist of 72 left and 78 right metatarsals were applied in this anatomic study between two variables and showed by a simple scatter plot. The first metatarsophalangeal joint is divided into four different types: type I (no HSB, 1.3%), type II (with one HSB, 0.07%), type IIIa (with two HSBs when THB is bigger, 28%), type IIIb (with two HSBs when FHB is bigger, 65.3%), and type IV (with three HSBs, 4.7%). There was no statistical difference between the left and right sides, except HVA, Meary, and pitch (P<0.05); all a, b, c, d, and i have statistical difference between male and female (P<0.05). Meanwhile, HVA and IMA and HVA and type group have a significant correlation. In summary, HVA and IMA and HVA and classification of HSBs have significant correlations. The classification and location of HSBs can be an important basis to choose operation methods and postoperation evaluation.

Abstract Cytochrome b5 reductase (b5R) deficiency manifests itself in 2 distinct ways. In methemoglobinemia type I, the patients only suffer from cyanosis, whereas in type II, the patients suffer in addition from severe mental retardation and neurologic impairment. Biochemical data indicate that this may be due to a difference in mutations, causing enzyme instability in type I and complete enzyme deficiency or enzyme inactivation in type II. We have investigated 7 families with methemoglobulinemia type I and found 7 novel mutations in the b5R gene. Six of these mutations predicted amino acid substitutions at sites not involved in reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) or flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) binding, as deduced from a 3-dimensional model of human b5R. This model was constructed from comparison with the known 3-dimensional structure of pig b5R. The seventh mutation was a splice site mutation leading to skipping of exon 5 in messenger RNA, present in heterozygous form in a patient together with a missense mutation on the other allele. Eight other amino acid substitutions, previously described to cause methemoglobinemia type I, were also situated in nonessential regions of the enzyme. In contrast, 2 other substitutions, known to cause the type II form of the disease, were found to directly affect the consensus FAD-binding site or indirectly influence NADH binding. Thus, these data support the idea that enzyme inactivation is a cause of the type II disease, whereas enzyme instability may lead to the type I form.

Objectives:Surgical resection and adjuvant radiation are mainstays of medulloblastoma (MB) patient management. We utilized a novel 3-dimensional assay to identify how (a) radiation, (b) excision of the primary tumour aggregate, and (c) both treatments combined influence MB cell invasiveness.Methods:Five MB cell lines (UW228-1, 2 and 3; Daoy, and Madsen) were implanted onto a 3-dimensional, type I collagen gel assay to assess tumour invasion distance over five days, in response to (1) needle-assisted excision of the central cell aggregate; (2) pre-exposure to single-dose and fractionated dose irradiation in doses from 6-25 and 8-24 Gy, respectively; and (3) excision plus either single-dose or fractionated radiation.Results:Within hours, individual MB cells detached from the surface of the cell aggregates and invaded the collagen matrix, to distances up to 1200 μm and at rates up to 300 μm daily. The UW228-1 cell line was less invasive than the other cell lines and was dropped from further analysis. In the four remaining lines, a dose-dependent decline in tumour invasiveness was identified, both for single-dose and fractionated radiation, which achieved statistically decreased invasion distances at higher doses, especially of fractionated irradiation. Excision of the central tumour aggregate tended towards exerting a late effect on cell invasion, but exerted no significant influence on the radio-sensitivity of residual cells.Conclusions:Both single-dose and fractionated dose irradiation appear to inhibit MB cell invasiveness in a dose-dependent manner, whereas excision of the central cell aggregate exerts no effect on residual invading cells.
