Drypetes sepiaria (Wight & Arn.) Pax. & Hoffim a medium sized tree member of Euphorbiaceae was investigated to determine the phytochemical constituents present in various extracts of the leaves through GC-MS analysis. Powdered leaf plant materials were subjected to successive extraction with organic solventssuch as methanol by Soxhlet extraction method. In the present study, GC-MS analysis revealed that a total of 23 different compounds identified by using methanol extract and all the identified compounds were medicinally valuable for the treatment of various human ailments. In addition, all the phytochemical compounds were needed for further investigations on toxicological aspects for the development of new lead of therapeutic interest.

Memecylon edule Roxb. a member of Melastomataceae and a valuable Indian ethnomedicinal plant and there are two accessions of this species was investigated to determine the phytochemical constituents present in various extracts of the leaves through GC-MS analysis. Powdered leaf plant materials were subjected to successive extraction with organic solvents such as methanol by Soxhlet extraction method. In the present study, a total of phytocompounds, twenty eight from Acc.1 and twenty five from Acc.2 were identified by GC-MS analysis using methanolic leaf extract, all the identified compounds were medicinally valuable for the treatment of various human ailments. In addition, all the phytochemical compounds were needed for further investigations on toxicological aspects for the development of new lead of therapeutic interest.

Aim of the study was to analyze the phytochemical constituents and estimation of total flavonoids and phenolic compounds of leaves and roots of the medicinal plant Lagascea mollis. Methanol extract of dried leaves and roots of L. mollis was prepared by using soxhlet apparatus. The extract prepared was tested forpreliminary qualitative phytochemical screening, followed by the quantitative estimation of total flavonoids and phenols by spectroscopy. The selected plant parts were found to contain alkaloids, flavonoids and terpenoids in both parts and saponin is present only in leaf. In quantitative estimation the reports revealedthe presence 0.017 and 0.013 mgRE/g extract and 458.91 and 704.50 mgGAE/g extract total flavonoids and phenolic compounds in leaf and root extract respectively. These major phytoconstituents present in this species may be accounted as factors for the medicinal importance of L. mollis.

Phytochemicals from herbal medicine are helpful for human health as well as crucial for the existence. The aim of present study was to investigate phytochemicals present in two medicinal plants Momordica charantia and Syzygium cumini to prove their traditional uses for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Successive extraction was done with selected solvents viz., ethanol, methanol and water using maceration. Standard methods were used for the identification of phytochemicals like alkaloids test, phenols test, saponins test, carbohydrates test, proteins test, amino acids test, flavonoids test, diterpenes test. In conclusion, our findings showed that the methanol extract of both the plant contain most of the phytoconstituents when compare with other solvent extracts such as ethanol and water. Methanol extract of Syzygium cumini showed positive test with numerous phytoconstituents compare to Momordica charantia.

Christia vespertilionis (L. f.) Bakh. f. has been widely known in treating various contagious diseases. This plant is popular among researchers and locals to have anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. There are two types of C. vespertilionis which is green and red type. The green C. vespertilionis was extensively studied by many researchers and known by the public as a cure to the cancer. This study was carried out to identify major phytochemicals and optimise extraction method of green C. vespertilionis leaves in different extraction techniques (maceration and Soxhlet extraction) and solvents (methanol and ethanol) through GC-MS analysis. The green C. vespertilionis leaves extract was tested using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrophotometer (GC-MS). The components were identified by comparing National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Based on four samples which are green C. vespertilionis leaves using maceration of methanol (GMM), maceration of ethanol (GME), Soxhlet of methanol (GSM) and Soxhlet of ethanol (GSE), seventy phytochemical compounds were identified. Thirteen major phytochemical compounds (> 4 % of peak area) are acetic acid, butyl ester; 1-Butanol, 3-methyl-, acetate; 1,3-Diisobutyrin, trimethylsilyl; .alpha.-d-Mannofuranoside, methyl; 1- Tetradecene; 1-Hexadecene; 1-Octadecene; Hexanoic acid, 3-oxo-, ethyl ester; 4-O-Methylmannose; n-Hexadecanoic acid; Phytol; 9,12,15-Octadecatrienoic acid, (Z,Z,Z)- and Squalene. Only ten out of thirteen compounds were reported to have biological activities. Among those samples, GMM and GSM were the most effective using correlation coefficient analysis between peak area (%) versus real time (min) with significant difference at P < 0.001.

Objective: To identify the phytochemical constituents present in ethanolic leaves extract of Taraxacum officinale (T. o) and to elucidate the bioactive compounds. Methods: The fresh leaves of T. officinale (1000g) were shade dried at room temperature for 30 days and the dried leaves were made into a fine powder. The ethanolic leaves extract obtained was dried with help of desiccator and rotatory evaporator. The dried samples tested for phytochemical analysis and bioactive compounds profiling through GC-MS analysis. Results: The phytochemical screening studies showed presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenol, cardiac glycosides and anthraquinones. in the leaves extract of T. officinale. GC-MS analysis showed 10 essential bioactive compounds and it revealed the presence of significant anticancer, Antimicrobial  and antidiabetic compounds. Conclusions: The ethanol extract of T. o possess the most important phytochemical compounds and it has various  medicinal  properties to cure dangerous diseases and disorders. The aim of this work was to carry out the phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activities of Haematostaphis barteri. The method of cold maceration was used in the extraction by serial exhaustive extraction method which involves successive extraction with solvents of increasing polarity from a non-polar (hexane) to a more polar solvent (methanol) to ensure that a wide polarity range of compound could be extracted. The results showed that flavonoids, terpenes, terpenes, tannins, and saponins are present in all the leaf extracts. The result of the antimicrobial activity obtained from the extracts of the leaf of Haematostaphis barteri revealed that all the crude extracts of the leaf inhibited or exhibited antibacterial activity against Salmonella paratyphi, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Penicillium spp. All the extracts did demonstrate antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger. The plant H. barteri is commonly used traditionally for the treatment of diarrhoea, wound, headache, malaria, dysentery and fevers. The overall results confirm the significance of the use of the plant in traditional medicinal treatment of diarrhea, wound, headache, malaria, dysentery and fevers, in line with reported claims.

Gomphrena globosa (L.) has high medicinal values. All parts are been used as folk medicines. The extract of whole plant / flowers has shown different phytochemical constituents with various clinical properties. These phytochemicals recognised are responsible for various activities such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, analgesic and cytotoxic. The ethanolic extract of Gomphrena globosa L. flowers of biochemical test indicates the presence of sterols, triterpenoid, tannins, phenols and flavonoids, and on GC-MS analysis it has shown 11 phytochemical compounds with different pharmacological activities. The major bioactive compounds are Docosanoic Acid, Docosyl Ester (25.404%) and Hexatriacontane (24.324%), has proven anti-inflammatory activity. Millettia aboensis (Hook.f.) Baker belongs to the Leguminosae family, known locally as nduezi in Igbo, erurumesi in Edo, and Òdúdū in Efik. The plant parts have proven to be active against some diseases. The plant was studied for its antimicrobial activity and the phytochemicals present. The plant materials were macerated and fractionated using different extraction methods. The compounds present in the fractions of the stem were detected with the aid of HPLC-DAD. The efficacy of the crude methanol and fractions from the root part was evaluated against Streptococcus mutans. The results showed that the aqueous fraction extract had the highest percentage yield (51.11%), followed by the ethyl acetate (24.10%), butanol (6.63%), and hexane (5.56%), while the methanol extract had a yield of 2.48%. Nine phytochemical compounds were detected from the fractions of the root extract: bis-oxazolidinone derivative – 1, circumdatin F – 2, enniatin B – 3, septicine – 4, orobol 8-C-glucoside – 5, rocaglamide – 6, genistein 6-C-glucoside – 7, 3-phenyl chromen-4-one – 8, and corynesidone D – 9. The methanol extract/fractions of M. aboensis showed no antimicrobial activities on clinical isolates at different concentrations (6.25-50 mg/ml). Based on the poor activity against Strep. mutans, but with promising phytoconstituents present, the extract/fractions need further investigation as regards its utilization against other pathogens.

Ficus sycomorus L is a large, semi-deciduous spreading savannah tree that belongs to the family (Moraceae) is used by many tribes in the treatments of skin infections. The aim of this study was to carry out phytochemical analysis and antifungal evaluation of F. sycomorus L. stem and leaf Methanol extract on some dermatophytic fungi. The stem and leaf crude extracts were obtained after drying using maceration and percolation with methanol as the solvent. The extract was subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening as well as GC-MS analysis for the presence of bioactive constituents. The antifungal inhibitory effect of the crude stem and leaf extracts was assessed by agar well diffusion methods. The phytochemical screening revealed that the leaves and stem-bark contained secondary metabolites such as tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, reducing sugar and steroid. The GC-MS assay showed that the most prevailing compound in the methanolic stem-bark extract was 2, 9, Diazabicyclo (4, 4, 0) decane-3,10 dione, while in the methanolic leaves extract was acetic acid. The anti-dermatophytic assay of the extracts against Microsporum canis and Tricophyton tonsurans showed that the extracts inhibited the fungi with zones of inhibitions ranging from 6.33±0.47 to 24.33±0.47mm with the leaf extract exhibiting higher inhibition zones than the stem extract (p˂0.01). The study shows that both the stem and leaf methanol extract of Ficus sycomorus L possesses antifungal activity and should be considered as a potential antifungal agent in search of newer agents to address dermatophytic fungal infections Key words: Ficus sycomorus L, Phytochemical/GC-MS Analysis, Antifungal activity
