Fruit walls and nut shells as an inspiration for the design of bio-inspired impact resistant hierarchically structured materials

ABSTRACTAlthough heteroepitaxy of lattice-matched and lattice-mismatched materials leading to artificially structured materials has resulted in impressive performance in various electronics devices, material combinations are usually limited by lattice matching constraints. A new concept for fabricating material systems using the atomically abrupt and low dimensional nature of layered materials, called van der Waals epitaxy (VDWE), has been developed. GaSe (Eg = 2.1 eV) has been deposited on the three dimensional surface of GaAs (111) using a molecular beam deposition system. GaSe was evaporated from a single Knudsen source, impinging on a heated substrate. Even with a lattice mismatch of 6% between the substrate and the growing film, good quality single crystal films were grown as determined by RHEED. The films have further been analyzed using a complementary combination of XPS and X-ray reflectivity.

Nanoscale engineering of regular structured materials is immensely demanded in various scientific areas. In this work, vertically oriented TiO2 nanotube arrays were grown by self-organizing electrochemical anodization. The effects of different fluoride ion concentrations (0.2 and 0.5 wt% NH4F) and different anodization times (2, 5, 10 and 20 h) on the morphology of nanotubes were systematically studied in an organic electrolyte (glycol). The growth mechanisms of amorphous and anatase TiO2 nanotubes were also studied. Under optimized conditions, we obtained TiO2 nanotubes with tube diameters of 70–160 nm and tube lengths of 6.5–45 μm. Serving as free-standing and binder-free electrodes, the kinetic, capacity, and stability performances of TiO2 nanotubes were tested as lithium-ion battery anodes. This work provides a facile strategy for constructing self-organized materials with optimized functionalities for applications.

The work is devoted to effective and ecological technologies for the application of functional structured materials for roads, railways, airfields on permafrost with forced cooling of the sub-soil foundation. The physical and mathematical simulation of the thermal state of frozen ground with single and double-layer coatings was performed. The temperature profiles of a model combine roadbed on the longstanding permafrost have been calculated at winter conditions of the Northern Hemisphere. This roadbed include an upper surface coating with low thermal conductivity and high emissivity in the long-wavelength IR range at convective-radiative heat exchange. The second high-conductive subsurface coating is laid on the underlying sub-soil and ensures its cooling as the “heat pump”. The efficiency of the proposed technology of roadbed construction based on the use of non-toxic waste of numerous industrial productions. The carried out research will be in demand for the specialists of transport support, engineering glaciology, in the field of climatology, oceanology, construction, environmental measures, and also in the presentation of financial and economic forecasts of the prospects for the development of polar and subpolar regions, the Arctic and the Antarctic, and high-mountain.

In the rapidly growing field of additive manufacturing (AM), the focus in recent years has shifted from prototyping to manufacturing fully functional, ultralight, ultrastiff end-use parts. This research investigates the mechanical behavior of octahedral, octet, vertex centroid, dode, diamond, rhombi octahedron, rhombic dodecahedron and solid lattice structured polyacrylate fabricated using Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) technology based on 3D printing and additive manufacturing processes. The compressive stress-strain behavior of the lattice structures observed is typical of cellular structures which include a region of nominally elastic response, yielding, plastic strain hardening to a peak in strength, followed by a drop in flow stress to a plateau region and finally rapid hardening associated with contact of the deformed struts with each other as part of densification. It was found that the elastic modulus and strength of the various lattice structured materials are proportional to each other. In addition, it was found that the octahedral, octet and diamond lattice structures are amongst the most efficient based on the measured specific stiffness and specific strength.
