Heat exchanger is an important device which is used in thermal systems in many industrial fields. Nano fluids are recently employed as coolants to improve the efficacy of heat exchangers. Regarding unique characteristics of Nano fluids, research studies in this area have witnessed a remarkable growth. Latest investigations conducted on use of Nano fluids in heat exchangers including those carried out on plate heat exchangers, double pipe heat exchangers, shell and tube heat exchangers, and compact heat exchangers are reviews and summarized. Meanwhile, some very interesting aspects of Nano fluids in combination with heat exchangers are presented.  The challenges and prospects for future research are presented in this paper.

Purpose This paper aims to study the fluid flow and heat transfer through a spiral double-pipe heat exchanger. Nowadays using spiral double-pipe heat exchangers has become popular in different industrial segments due to its complex and spiral structure, which causes an enhancement in heat transfer. Design/methodology/approach In these heat exchangers, by converting the fluid motion to the secondary motion, the heat transfer coefficient is greater than that of the straight double-pipe heat exchangers and cause increased heat transfer between fluids. Findings The present study, by using the Fluent software and nanofluid heat transfer simulation in a spiral double-tube heat exchanger, investigates the effects of operating parameters including fluid inlet velocity, volume fraction of nanoparticles, type of nanoparticles and fluid inlet temperature on heat transfer efficiency. Originality/value After presenting the results derived from the fluid numerical simulation and finding the optimal performance conditions using a genetic algorithm, it was found that water–Al2O3 and water–SiO2 nanofluids are the best choices for the Reynolds numbers ranging from 10,551 to 17,220 and 17,220 to 31,910, respectively.

The inclusion of baffles in a double pipe heat exchanger is becoming increasingly important as it improves the heat exchanger's performance. CFD analysis is used in this paper to investigate the performance of double pipe heat exchangers with and without helical baffles on both shell tube sides. The 3D Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was created in Solid Works, and the FloEFD software was used to analyze the conjugate Heat Transfer between the heat exchanger's tube and shell sides. Heat transfer characteristic like Outlet temperature of shell and tube are investigated along with pressure drop on shell and tube side. Based on CFD results of Double Pipe Heat exchanger with helical baffle on both shell side and tube side (Type 4) gives the better results than the other type of heat exchangers with an increased pressure drop than the others, results reveals that type 4 outlet temperature of shell side is 8% higher and on tube side it is 5.5% higher, also pressure drop on shell side is 12% higher and on tube side it is 42% higher than the other types.

The progress made in recent years in the field of reinforced heat transfer technology of shell and tube heat exchangers in China and abroad is reviewed. The energy-saving means and results of improving the heat transfer efficiency of shell and tube heat exchangers are introduced from the experimental research and numerical simulation respectively, and the future research of shell and tube heat exchangers to strengthen the heat transfer technology is also foreseen.

In this article, a mathematical simulation of a double pipe heat exchanger is carried out, having the longitudinal rectangular fins with the dimension of (2*3*1000) mm, mounted on the outer surface of the inner tube of the heat exchanger. In this paper, the advantage of using of that type of fins and its effect on the effectiveness of the heat exchanger are studied with the help of the computer program. The carried out research allowsmaking the calculation to find the optimum design parameters of heat exchangers. The outer tube diameter is (34.1mm) while the inner tube diameter is (16.05mm). The tubes wall thickness is (1.5mm) and the model length was (1 m). The hot water is flowing through the inner tube in parallel with the cold water that passing the outer tube. The hot and cold water temperature at the inlet is (75°C & 30°C) respectively. The mass flow rate inside the central pipe is (0.1 kg/s) while the annular pipe carrying (0.3 kg/s). In the present work, the program ANSYS Workbench 15.0 was used to find out the results of heat transfer as well as the behavior of liquids inside the heat exchangers.

The paper describes the propellant cooling system using liquid nitrogen and a combination of recuperative heat exchangers, including sections of the double pipe heat exchanger and a twisted heat exchanger located in a tank with antifreeze, cooled by nitrogen gas coming out of the sections of the double pipe heat exchanger. Mathematical models of cooling processes for two variants of movement of propellant and liquid nitrogen in the channels of the double pipe heat exchanger sections are considered. Their using makes it possible to analyze the efficiency of propellant cooling operations depending on its mass, design parameters of the system tanks and heat exchangers, consumption characteristics of nitrogen and propellant, as well as to predict the required mass of liquid nitrogen and the time of propellant cooling during the operation of launching complex propellant-feed systems. Calculated dependences and simulation results of propellant and antifreeze cooling in a tank with a twisted heat exchanger are presented. The influence of variants of arranging propellant cooling processes and liquid nitrogen consumption on the efficiency of the cooling system is analyzed. Comparing to the available systems the capability of reducing the cost of liquid nitrogen are identified as well as reducing time of the propellant cooling operations by means of equipping launch complexes.

In this paper, the new approach of Constructal theory has been employed to design shell and tube heat exchangers. Constructal theory is a new method for optimal design in engineering applications. The purpose of this paper is optimization of shell and tube heat exchangers by reduction of total cost of the exchanger using the constructal theory. The total cost of the heat exchanger is the sum of operational costs and capital costs. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the shell and tube heat exchanger is increased by the use of constructal theory. Therefore, the capital cost required for making the heat transfer surface is reduced. Moreover, the operational energy costs involving pumping in order to overcome frictional pressure loss are minimized in this method. Genetic algorithm is used to optimize the objective function which is a mathematical model for the cost of the shell and tube heat exchanger and is based on constructal theory. The results of this research represent more than 50% reduction in costs of the heat exchanger.

Despite the fact that multipass shell-and-tube heat exchangers operating at high temperature are subject to frequent problems related to flange sealing, there is neither detailed explanations for the reasons of the failures nor an adequate solution to this problem. Specific geometry of multipass heat exchangers and the temperature difference between the inlet and the outlet fluids is responsible for the existence of a thermal circumferential gradient at the shell-to-channel bolted joint. However, existing flange design methods do not address nonaxisymmetrical temperature loading of the flanged joint assembly. The circumferential thermal gradient, as the cause of frequent failures to seal the flanged joints, is ignored. This paper outlines the analytical modeling of a flanged joint with a tube sheet of a multipass heat exchanger subjected to a nonaxisymmetrical thermal loading. A shell-and-tube heat exchanger of 51 in. diameter with cocurrent flow was used for analysis. The main steps of the theoretical analysis used for the determination of the circumferential temperature profiles and the thermal expansion displacements and distortions of the bolted joint components are given. The results from the proposed analytical model are compared with those obtained from finite element models.

This paper describes the development of a numerical algorithm and a graphical method that can be employed in order to determine the overall heat transfer coefficient inside heat exchangers. The method is based on an energy balance and utilizes the spreadsheet application software Microsoft Excel™. The application is demonstrated in an example for designing a single pass shell and tube heat exchanger that was developed in the Department of Materials Technology of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) where water vapor is superheated by a secondary oil cycle. This approach can be used to reduce the number of hardware iterations in heat exchanger design.
