In general, economic and agricultural policy of the successive Iraqi governments was not toward agricultural development and achieve food security, whether for humans or animals, for dependence on exports of oil to import country's food needs in a difficult currency, which cost the state budget amounts. Scientific and technological underdevelopment, lack of feasibility studies, economic performance,customs, social traditions, religious beliefs and neglect of the farmer caused a lack of interest in the cultivation of barley and its selection of high quality and quantity varieties of grains,straw,land, storage, and marketing operations.The study was conducted to assess the economic feasibility of the productivity of the five Asian barley varieties (Hordeum vulgare L.), (Arivat, Norma ,Iba99 ,NS313 andBip999) for grain and straw yield in Bakrajo area during the winter season of (2015 -2016). The results showed that grain and straw yield parameters were significantly varied according to varieties. Significant increase in grain yield (2720kg/ha), hay yield (3643kg/ha), grain and hay cost (736.180)1000ID/ha, hay revenue (582.880) 1000ID/ha, grain revenue (1019.997)1000ID/ha, profit (866.697)1000ID/ha, seed product (27.200) kg and 1000ID income (2.221) were recorded for NS313 and Bip999 varieties, while the number of grains / spike (44.133) and plant length (89.433) cm was recorded for Iba99 variety.

The number of adventitious roots of two- and six-row barleys (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown under irrigation at Bozeman, Montana in 1970 and 1971, was related to yield and other agronomic characteristics. Adventitious roots were counted shortly before heading and at maturity and correlated with 15 agronomic characteristics. Adventitious root number was not correlated with yield of barley, except for two out of six cases in two-row barley. Roots per tiller, per plant and per square metre were all positively correlated with each other. The number of kernels per spike increased as roots per tiller increased but decreased with a high number of tillers per plant. Kernel plumpness and numbers of tillers were negatively correlated in two-row barley, but not in six-row barley. Cultivars differed significantly in yield and adventitious root number. Six-row barley had more roots per tiller but fewer tillers per square metre than two-row barley. Roots per tiller and roots per square metre measurements had the best repeatability between years for six-row barley, but no root measurements were consistent over years for the two-row type. Tillers per plant measurements for both two-row and six-row barleys and tillers per square metre for just two-row barley were consistent over years. Tiller and root number interact and are usually positively related. The genetic variation for root number shown here could be used in crosses for selection of superior genotypes.Key words: Barley, Hordeum vulgare, adventitious roots, subcrown internode, yield components, seeding rate

A field experiment was carried out during the winter season 2014/2015 in one of the fields of Abi Gharq district, located 10 km west of the Babylon governorate. The randomized complete block design was used under split-plots arrangement with three replications. The main plots were included levels of nitrogen fertilizer (without fertilizer, 50, 100, 150 N, 200, 250 kg). while the sub-plots were included (without a mower, a mower after 45 days, a mower after 65 days, a mower after 85 days) after planting, The data were taken and analyzed according to the used design and the averages were tested according to the LSD test, and the results were summarized as follows: The date of mowing C1 (mower after 45 days of planting) was significantly higher by giving the highest average for the degree of fallowness and the index of harvest, and the percentage of nitrogen in the green fodder was 3.647, 37.63% and 1.837%, respectively. Treatment C0 (without mower) outperformed significantly by giving it the highest average of biological yield, grain yield and nitrogen percentage in grains, as it gave 15,114 tons. H-1 and 5.73 tons. H-1 and 1.242%, respectively The fertilizer level N5 (250 kg N. H-1) gave the highest average of the degree of lying, biological yield, grain yield, nitrogen percentage in green fodder and nitrogen content in grains, as it gave 3.854% and 7.571 tons. H-1 and 6.20 tons. % And 1.397%, respectively, We conclude from the results of the study that lack of without cutting to a significant increase in the degree of resting, biological yield and grain yield, and we conclude that the high levels of nitrogen led to a significant increase in the degree of lying, biological yield, grain yield, and the proportion of nitrogen in green fodder and grains

Management practices such as the use of fertilizers and fungicides can have positive effects on grain yield and quality of cereals, especially where diseases are a concern. Six cultivars of six-row barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were tested at two fertility levels (standard and high) with a late-season application of the foliar fungicide Tilt (propiconazole) to determine their agronomic responses to these management practices. In 1988, when yields were limited because of early season drought, only Leduc showed a positive yield response to the Tilt, even though it has the highest level of genetic resistance to scald and net blotch of the cultivars tested. In 1989, when yields were again limited by adverse environmental conditions, no response to Tilt was found. In 1990, when growing conditions during the season were excellent, Empress, Noble and Samson had positive responses to Tilt application. Tilt had no effect on grain protein, maturity, or harvest index; it slightly improved test weights and kernel weights and decreased percent thins; and it had variable effects on height, number of viable tillers m−2, and kernel number spike−1. Yield response to Tilt was not affected by fertility regime. High fertility (112 kg ha−1 N 37 kg ha−1 P) resulted in an overall increase in yield of 0.62 t ha−1 from the standard fertility treatment (84 kg ha−1 N 27 kg ha−1 P); decreased harvest index; delayed maturity in 1989 only; increased height, number of viable tillers m−2, and kernel number spike−1; increased protein content of the grain in 1988 only; and had no effect on test weight, kernel weight and percent thins. Because of the variability of response from year to year and cultivar to cultivar, the economic feasibility of Tilt application may be limited.Key words: Hordeum vulgare L., propiconazole, soil fertility, management

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is an economically important crop cultivated in temperate climates all over the world. Adverse environmental factors negatively affect its survival and productivity. RNA silencing is a conserved pathway involved in the regulation of growth, development and stress responses. The key components of RNA silencing are the Dicer-like proteins (DCLs), Argonautes (AGOs) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RDRs). Despite its economic importance, there is no available comprehensive report on barley RNA silencing machinery and its regulation. In this study, we in silico identified five DCL (HvDCL), eleven AGO (HvAGO) and seven RDR (HvRDR) genes in the barley genome. Genomic localization, phylogenetic analysis, domain organization and functional/catalytic motif identification were also performed. To understand the regulation of RNA silencing, we experimentally analysed the transcriptional changes in response to moderate, persistent or gradient heat stress treatments: transcriptional accumulation of siRNA- but not miRNA-based silencing factor was consistently detected. These results suggest that RNA silencing is dynamically regulated and may be involved in the coordination of development and environmental adaptation in barley. In summary, our work provides information about barley RNA silencing components and will be a ground for the selection of candidate factors and in-depth functional/mechanistic analyses.

Since there is evidence that malting quality is related to the storage protein (hordein) fraction, in the present work the hordein polypeptide patterns from 13 barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties of different malting quality were analysed in order to explore the feasibility of using hordein electrophoresis to assist in the selection of malting barleys. The formation of clusters separating the varieties with higher malting quality from the others with lower quality suggests that there is a relationship between the general hordein polypeptide pattern and malting quality in the varieties analysed. By the Sperman's correlation test three hordein bands correlated negatively with malting quality in the germplasm studied.
