A study was made of the carbon and nitrogen nutrition of races 7, 8, and 10 of Cladosporium fulvum, and an attempt was made to relate the findings to the differential pathogenicity of the races.Cysteine was found to exert a differential effect on the growth of two races of the pathogen. Race 1 was stimulated by concentrations inhibitory to race 6. C. fulvum was found to have a partial deficiency for thiamine. The sporulation of race 10 on susceptible tomato plants was heavier with alanine-grown cultures than with any other nutritional treatment. Altering the nitrogen nutrition of varieties Potentate (S) and V-121 (R) did not affect their differential reactions to race 1. A reduction in nitrogen feeding to Stirling Castle (R) increased its resistance to race 1.A chromatographic study was made of the changes in amino compounds and sugars in Potentate and V-121 after infection by races 1 and 6. The relation of the findings to the resistance of V-121 to race 1 is discussed.The resistance of Stirling Castle was investigated by comparing the amino compounds and sugars in leaves of healthy plants and plants infected by race 1 under optimal conditions and under reduced light, where the resistance breaks down. Chromatographic analyses showed a noticeable depletion of certain metabolites in plants infected under reduced light as compared with the amount of depletion, if any, in the controls.

Fishery processing by-products have been of great interest to researchers due to their beneficial applications in many fields. In this study, five types of marine by-products, including demineralized crab shell, demineralized shrimp shell, shrimp head, shrimp shell, and squid pen, provided sources of carbon and nitrogen nutrition by producing a protease from Paenibacillus sp. TKU047. Strain TKU047 demonstrated the highest protease productivity (2.98 U/mL) when cultured for two days on a medium containing 0.5% of shrimp head powder (SHP). The mass of TKU047 protease was determined to be 32 kDa (approximately). TKU047 protease displayed optimal activity at 70–80 °C and pH 9, with a pH range of stability from 6 to 11. TKU047 protease also showed stability in solutions containing surfactants and detergents. Based on its excellent properties, Paenibacillus sp. TKU047 protease may be a feasible candidate for inclusion in laundry detergents.

<p>The effect of different carbon and nitrogen nutrition sources on the efficiency of xenobiotic biodegradation was investigated by means of submerged xylotrophic basidiomycetes cultures. We cultivated the prospective strains of xylotrophic basidiomycetes like <em>Flammulina velutipes</em> F-1105, <em>Pleurotus eryngii</em> P-er, <em>Trametes hirsuta</em> Th-11, and <em>Daedalea quercina</em> Dq-08 on the lab shaker on modified glucose-peptone medium. Some 24 of the carbon and 15 of the nitrogen nutrition sources were investigated. Absolutely dry biomass of the mycelium was determined by weighting method. The pollutants biodegradation efficiency of submerged cultures was determined by a modified method on a model compound – <em>Methyl Orange</em>. The individual carbon- and nitrogen-containing components of the modified glucose-peptone medium, the cultivation on which provides induction of model compound <em>Methyl Orange</em> biodegradation efficiency of the strains was also determined. They mostly were the carbon sources like glucose, fructose, xylose, starch, glycerol, PEG -1500, and the nitrogen sources like urea and peptone. It is suggested that the biodegradation efficiency of induction could caused either by inductive action of the nutrient component on metabolism of culture or by the manifestation of an adaptive response to adverse conditions.</p> <p><em>Keywords: xylotrophic basidiomycetes, biodegradation, Methyl Orange.</em></p>
