The riparian and swamp forests/scrub of black alder (Alnus glutinosa), white alder (Alnus incana), grey willow (Salix cinerea) and bay willow (S. pentandra) of the Piné Plateau (Trentino, central Alps) are described here in terms of their floristic composition. They are assigned to the following associations: Filipendulo vulgarisAlnetum glutinosae, Stellario nemorum-Alnetum glutinosae, Carici elongatae-Alnetum glutinosae, Carici elataeAlnetum glutinosae, Frangulo-Salicetum cinereae and Salicetum pentandro-cinereae. In addition, information regarding the distribution of the previous woody communities in the Trentino-Alto Adige Region and their corresponding vegetation series and geosigmeta are provided.

Optimization of extraction conditions of the proanthocyanidins (PAC) and PAC-rich extract (PACE) from bark of alder species (Alnus incana and Alnus glutinosa) were performed varying solvents (ethanol, distilled water), extraction methods (conventional and microwave assisted extraction), extraction temperature (20–120 °C) and extraction times (5–60 minutes). The optimal extraction conditions established in the work provide 87 % PAC transition from the bark of alder species to hydrophilic extracts. On the basis of the extraction results, the technological scheme of PAC and PACE isolation from grey alder bark with focus on biorefinery was developed.

Small numbers of cluster roots were found on older roots of Alnus incana ssp. rugosa (speckled alder) shrubs in the field at 2 of 11 sites. Cluster roots also formed infrequently in speckled alder grown hydroponically in complete nutrient solution. No cluster roots formed in solutions lacking P or Fe. Small numbers of cluster roots also formed in Alnus glutinosa grown hydroponically in the presence of P but not in its absence. In contrast, Alnus rubra produced small numbers of cluster roots in the absence of P but not in its presence. No cluster roots formed in Alnus viridis ssp. crispa. Cluster roots are probably not important for nutrient uptake in speckled alder because they form infrequently both in the field and in hydroponic culture. Variation of metric and qualitative characteristics of <i>A. incana</i> (L.) Moench. and <i>A. glutinosa</i> (L.) Gaertn. has been studied in 10 natural populations in West Siberia, Russia and the Czech Republic in connection with the problem of natural hybridization. Morphological peculiarities of the species and their spontaneous hybrids are shown. Twelve leaf characteristics were used, in addition, qualitative characteristics were assessed, such as: type of bark, degree of pubescence of leaves and stems, and presence of a &ldquo;tuft&rdquo; in the angles of leaf veins. The reasons for hybridization of these species are discussed.

An invasive East Asian rust fungus <em>Melampsoridium hiratsukanum, </em>obligate biotroph belonging to <em>Pucciniastraceae</em>, Pucciniales (Basidiomycota) is found widely spread on leaves of <em>Alnus incana </em>in eastern, central and southern parts of Lithuania. On <em>Alnus glutinosa </em>this fungus is rare, sometimes occurring with an alder leaf pest, a microscopic eriophyid gall mite <em>Acalitus brevitarsus. </em>Information on the distribution patterns, ecological and morphological characters of this neomycete is given.
