Using primary sources including diaries and letters, this chapter sheds considerable light on the female intellectual and cultural sphere. A wide-ranging discussion of middle-class women living in an Irish urban context is offered here. Although Victorian elite women left a much lighter record than that of men, private correspondence from the large Workman family and Mary Watts’ diary and biography provide a fascinating insight into the female sphere as it existed in the town. Women’s experience of education, culture, singleness, courtship, marriage, motherhood and philanthropy are all discussed in this chapter, raising questions about levels of female independence, self-worth and participation in the public sphere. Fatherhood and childhood are also discussed in this chapter.

Two types of nationalism emerge from the French Québec secondary school system between the 1920's and the 1970's. The classical humanities school system, controlled by the clergy, socia lizes its clientèle to a differential nationalism which focuses histo rical singularity on the fusion of ethnic identity, french culture and the catholic religion. This nationalism emphasizes the impor tance of the cultural sphere permeated by religion and relegates the economic sphere to a level of secondary significance. In con trast, the public secondary school system, born out of the initiati ves of the teaching brothers congregations, gives rise to a pragma tic nationalism. It adopts the logic of the technical and scientific approach in order to achieve the deproletarization of the franco phone population and the latter's appropriation of the economic activities within the framework of a french and catholic society. These two nationalism give rise to conflicts between the teaching brothers congregations bolstered by a lower class aspiring to social mobility, and the official Church supported by the ruling bourgeoisie founded on the liberal professions.

In the interwar period of the twentieth century, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Canada tried to expand its influence on the public life in the diaspora. To accomplish this task, it enlisted the support of the conservative Canadian Sitch association (reorganized into the United hetman organization in 1934). In its turn, it helped the Sitch in every possible way and provided the permission for the legal functioning of their organization from the Canadian authorities. The monarchists published the articles about their activities and tasks of the society in the pages of Greek Catholic newspapers, such as "Canadian Ukrainian", "Ukrainian News". However, in the 30s of the twentieth century Greek Catholics and monarchists have broken off their relations. Coming of the new bishop, Vasyl Ladyka, instead of Nikita Budka, who began to distance himself from the society in the 1930s, resulted in the creation of the Greek Catholic own organization, the Ukrainian Catholic brotherhood, in 1932. Now UCB had to defend their views before the public. In the religious sphere, the society spread the Catholic faith in the Ukrainian rite, together with priests created parishes, built churches, supported church institutions, organizations, and so on. In the cultural sphere, it founded and financed Ukrainian schools, evening courses and lectures on Ukrainian studies, held concerts, sports competitions, drama performances, built people`s homes, and so on. In the public field it organized orphanages, shelters, hospitals, summer camps for young people, youth centers and so on. Not so actively, but still the fraternity reacted on the political events in Ukraine and joined the general actions of the national patriotic bloc of the Ukrainian public associations in Canada in support of compatriots. As a result, Greek Catholics became more actively involved in the social and political life of the diaspora on equally with Orthodox and communists.

Croatian politician Većeslav Holjevac (1917-1970) has been remembered as one of the most successful mayors of the city of Zagreb. However, his character and political work are scarcely known to the public today. His merits in the cultural sphere are mostly forgotten, as well as the fact that he was one of the most important Croatian dissidents. His case delineates the issue of the Croatian national reform movement known as the Croatian Spring. Due to his solid character he was not afraid to defend his standpoints, even in the fights with communist comrades who were higher in the hierarchy of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia, which caused his political decline. The article presents the critical moments of his dissent and political disagreement with his comrades that led him to the role of the party renegade. The article also discusses the claims that Holjevac's was to become the leader of the Croatian Spring.

The results of the paper work consist in substantiating the basic conditions necessary for the implementation of marketing strategies in the management of the sociocultural sphere. Conclusions and discussion. The full use of marketing strategies in the socio-cultural sphere requires a number of prerequisites, including: knowledge of the market of socio-cultural services; knowledge of the needs of consumers, especially their creative tastes, priorities in leisure activities, etc .; taking into account the real capabilities of state and municipal bodies; search for sponsors with mandatory consideration of their interests; use of a marketing communications system, etc.priorities in the conduct of leisure, etc; consideration of the capabilities of state and municipal bodies; search for possible sponsors, taking into account their interests; use of marketing communications system, etc. The main attention should be paid to the development, implementation and evaluation of innovative technologies of social, cultural, cultural and educational activities by studying the requirements of potential consumers, thus optimizing the organization’s activities and harmonizing the interests between institutions and the public. In this interdisciplinary article that draws on the intersections of Hungarian and Jewish Studies within a framework of cultural studies and gender studies, Louise O. Vasvári investigates the socio-political role of beauty pageants in 1920s European and—more specifically—in Hungarian social, political and cultural life. The article is structured as a case study of the life of Böske Simon, who was born into a bourgeois Jewish family in 1909 and who won the first Miss Hungaria competition in 1929, soon followed by the title of Miss Europa. Vasvári aims to place Simon’s role as Hungarian beauty queen in a broader focus by examining from a gender perspective the international development of beauty pageants, of the illustrated press, and of commercial beauty culture in the 1920s. She examines the symbolic space allotted to the concept “Modern Girl,” who in the interwar [re]construction of gender and national identities came to represent both the enticements and the dangers of modernity. More specifically, she examines how the problematic gender representation of women in such pageants and their reception by the press and by the public interact in the broader interwar nationalistic cultural sphere in post-Trianon Hungary.

Abstract: The article reviews the developing studies of visuality with respect to their own focus on cultural and political fields in which visual communication unfolds. I found that that some of the academic interests related to visuality can be located within the broader or intersecting field of cultural and political studies and provide successful tools of analysing and describing the communicational interactions within local communities situated in broader contexts of mobility. Some light is shed on the visualisations of the current condition of the nation-state with respect to globalizing or Europeanising tendencies. Also, I discuss a more general impact of mobility and novel visualisations of the public and cultural sphere.

Theatre in the Countryside. The Middle Classes and the Public Sphere between the Provinces and the Metropolis. The Archduchy of Austria below the Enns is particularly suited to tracing the development of a provincial theatrical landscape and investigating its relation to the metropolis, since in the crownland’s centre lay Vienna, one of the largest cities in the world around 1900. The article therefore ex- amines the formation of a bourgeois cultural sphere in those parts of Lower Austria that were then known as the “flat countryside” and which roughly correspond to today’s federal state. During the 19th century, there emerged a theatrical landscape whose principal features proved to be long-lasting and which nevertheless remained a precarious phenomenon. This also applies if we discuss theatre as an expression of the bourgeois public sphere – in both its sense as a theatre business sustained by the middle classes and as the promise to enable participation by a broad public beyond the boundaries of classes and estates.

Our cultural sphere is characterized by decreasing the importance of physical activity in the context of sedentary lifestyle. It results in increasing the importance of regular sports and physical activities as an integral part of the active responsible approach to life that supports good health and the overall physical and mental condition of the individual. A major contribution to this field is to promote physical activities at all levels of our educational system, including the university environment. Based on the evaluation of the public inquiry, the Department of Physical Education and Sport at VŠB – Technical University in Ostrava seeks to increase the attractiveness of the offer of sports activities for its students.
