In [A1]–[A4] there is an abstract description, in terms of “α-systems”, of the object of a nested priority construction, and there is a metatheorem listing conditions which guarantee the success of the construction. The metatheorem has different versions, with later versions becoming simpler and more general. The information needed to meet the requirements is enumerated by a function, where α is an arbitrary recursive ordinal. All other objects associated with the α-system are r.e. In the basic metatheorem, the requirements must all be at level α, although there is a special result, for limit α, which allows one requirement at each level in an increasing sequence with limit α. There are other abstract descriptions of nested priority arguments in [K1], [K2], [K3], and [L-L].A typical use of α-systems is that in [B], where it is shown that, for a relation R on a recursive structure , under suitable assumptions, if R does not have a “recursive Σα” definition in , then there is a recursive isomorphic copy of in which the image of R is not . There is no difficulty in generalizing this to make each of infinitely many relations not , when the assumptions are uniformly satisfied and each relation has no recursive Σα definition. However, the metatheorems for α-systems do not apply to the situation where we have several (even two) relations Ri, which do not have recursive Σβi definitions and whose images we wish to make not for distinct βi. An even more basic problem is to construct a recursive copy of a recursive structure via an isomorphism whose restriction to various sets Ui, is not If βi, = α for all i, then we can use an (α + 1)-system; otherwise, the old metatheorems do not apply.

AbstractA basic problem of cluster analysis is the determination or selection of the number of clusters evinced in any set of data. We address this issue with multinomial data using Akaike’s information criterion and demonstrate its utility in identifying an appropriate number of clusters of tumor types with similar profiles of cell surface antigens.

Abstract/Description: Fernández de Oviedo, famous Spanish conquistador and author of "Historia General y Natural de los Indias", is a controversial historical figure. Since his period, he is usually portrayed negatively as an inhuman, fierce enemy of the Indians. Kohut's monograph investigates the validity of such portrayal. According to his study, his negative role cannot be denied, but there were number of issues that are usually omitted and Oviedo's negative portrayal may have been exaggerated. Ca. 60 % of the Dutch activated sludge plants consist of completely mixed systems, experiments have been carried out in completely mixed pilot plants to study the biological P-removal. The research was carried out in two pilot plants. The pilot plants consisted of: anaerobic reactor, anoxic reactor, aerobic reactor and a clarifier. All the reactors were completely mixed. Both plants were fed with settled domestic waste water at a sludge loading of 400 and 250 g COD/kg sludge.day respectively. Remarkable is the difference between the ratio 1:1:2,7 in combination with the internal recirculation flow anoxic-anaerobic of 160 % and the ratio 1:1:4,1 with a recirculation flow of 30 %. During the start-up at a sludge loading of 250 g COD/kg sludge.day and an internal recirculation flow of 30 %, bulking sludge developed almost immediately. The Premoval was completely disturbed. Increasing the internal recirculation flow to 160% had a positive effect on settling properties and P-removal. This investigation has pointed out that a completely mixed system is suitable for biological P-removal, without negatively affecting the nitrification. Important factors in the process are the ratio anaerobic:anoxic:aerobic and the recirculation flows.

The solubilities of tetraalkylammonium dianilinetetraisothiocyanatochromates(III) (alkyl = methyl, ethyl, 1-propyl, and 1-butyl) in water, water - methanol, water - tert-butyl alcohol and water - acetonitrile solutions were measured at 25 °C. The results were used to evaluate the activity coefficients and Gibbs energies of transfer of the saturating salts from water to the mixed systems. The Gibbs energies of transfer of the [Cr(C6H5NH2)2(NCS)4]- ion were obtained by means of known ionic transfer functions for the tetraalkylammonium ions based on the TATB assumption.

The introduction of recursion into linguistics was the result of applying some of the results of mathematical logic to the study of language. In particular, recursion was introduced in the 1950s as a general property of the mechanical procedure underlying the grammar, in order to account for language’s discrete infinity and expressive power—in the 1950s, this mechanical procedure was a production system, whereas more recently, of course, it is the set-operator merge. Unfortunately, the recent literature has confused the general recursive property of a grammar with specific instances of (recursive) rules/operations within a grammar; more worryingly still, there has been a general conflation of these recursive rules with some of the self-embedded structures these rules can generate, adding to the confusion. The conflation is manifold but always fallacious. Moreover, language manifests a much more generally recursive structure than is usually recognized: bundles of the universal (Specifier)-Head-Complement(s) geometry.

Abstract Creole languages have generally not figured prominently in cross-linguistic studies of word-prosodic typology. In this paper, we present a phonological analysis of the prosodic system of Lung’Ie or Principense (ISO 639-3 code: pre), a Portuguese-lexifier creole language spoken in São Tomé and Príncipe. Lung’Ie has produced a unique result of the contact between the two different prosodic systems common in creolization: a stress-accent lexifier and tone language substrates. The language has a restrictive privative H/Ø tone system, in which the /H/ is culminative, but non-obligatory. Since rising and falling tones are contrastive on long vowels, the tone must be marked underlyingly. While it is clear that tonal indications are needed, Lung’Ie reveals two properties more expected of an accentual system: (i) there can only be one heavy syllable per word; (ii) this syllable must bear a H tone. This raises the question of whether syllables with a culminative H also have metrical prominence, i.e. stress. However, the problem with equating stress with H tone is that Lung’Ie has two kinds of nouns: those with a culminative H and those which are toneless. The nouns with culminative H are 87% of Portuguese origin, incorporated through stress-to-tone alignment, while the toneless ones are 92% of African origin. Although other creole languages have been reported with split systems of “accented” vs. fully specified tonal lexemes, and others with mixed systems of tone and stress, Lung’Ie differs from these cases in treating African origin words as toneless, a quite surprising result. We consider different analyses and conclude that Lung’Ie has a privative /H/ tone system with the single unusual stress-like property of weight-to-tone.

AbstractThe construction sector is progressively becoming more circular by reducing waste, re-using building materials and adopting regenerative solutions for energy production and biodiversity protection. The implications of circularity on construction activities are complex and require the careful evaluation of impacts to select the appropriate path forward. Evaluations of circular solutions and their environmental effectiveness are often performed based on various types of life cycle-based impact assessments. This paper uses systemic thinking to map and evaluate different impact assessment methodologies and their implications for a shift to more circular solutions. The following systemic levels are used to group the methodologies: product (material life cycle declarations and building assessments), organisation (certification and management schemes) and system (policies, standards and regulations). The results confirm that circular economy is integrated at all levels. However, development and structure are not coordinated or governed unidirectionally, but rather occur simultaneously at different levels. This recursive structure is positive if the methods are applied in the correct context, thus providing both autonomy and cohesion in decision making. Methods at lower systemic levels may then improve production processes and stimulate the market to create circular and innovative building solutions, whereas methods at higher systemic levels can be used, for example, by real estate builders, trade organisations and governments to create incentives for circular development and innovation in a broader perspective. Use of the performance methods correctly within an actor network is therefore crucial for successful and effective implementation of circular economy in the construction sector.
