BackgroundTherapeutic virtual reality (VR) has emerged as an efficacious treatment modality for a wide range of health conditions. However, despite encouraging outcomes from early stage research, a consensus for the best way to develop and evaluate VR treatments within a scientific framework is needed.ObjectiveWe aimed to develop a methodological framework with input from an international working group in order to guide the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and communication of trials that develop and test VR treatments.MethodsA group of 21 international experts was recruited based on their contributions to the VR literature. The resulting Virtual Reality Clinical Outcomes Research Experts held iterative meetings to seek consensus on best practices for the development and testing of VR treatments.ResultsThe interactions were transcribed, and key themes were identified to develop a scientific framework in order to support best practices in methodology of clinical VR trials. Using the Food and Drug Administration Phase I-III pharmacotherapy model as guidance, a framework emerged to support three phases of VR clinical study designs—VR1, VR2, and VR3. VR1 studies focus on content development by working with patients and providers through the principles of human-centered design. VR2 trials conduct early testing with a focus on feasibility, acceptability, tolerability, and initial clinical efficacy. VR3 trials are randomized, controlled studies that evaluate efficacy against a control condition. Best practice recommendations for each trial were provided.ConclusionsPatients, providers, payers, and regulators should consider this best practice framework when assessing the validity of VR treatments.

Abstract This research explores the development of a novel method and apparatus for creating spherical panoramas enhanced with high dynamic range (HDR) for high fidelity Virtual Reality 360 degree (VR360) user experiences. A VR360 interactive panorama presentation using spherical panoramas can provide virtual interactivity and wider viewing coverage; with three degrees of freedom, users can look around in multiple directions within the VR360 experiences, gaining the sense of being in control of their own engagement. This degree of freedom is facilitated by the use of mobile displays or head-mount-devices. However, in terms of image reproduction, the exposure range can be a major difficulty in reproducing a high contrast real-world scene. Imaging variables caused by difficulties and obstacles can occur during the production process of spherical panorama facilitated with HDR. This may result in inaccurate image reproduction for location-based subjects, which will in turn result in a poor VR360 user experience. In this article we describe a HDR spherical panorama reproduction approach (workflow and best practice) which can shorten the production processes, and reduce imaging variables, and technical obstacles and issues to a minimum. This leads to improved photographic image reproduction with fewer visual abnormalities for VR360 experiences, which can be adaptable into a wide range of interactive design applications. We describe the process in detail and also report on a user study that shows the proposed approach creates images which viewers prefer, on the whole, to those created using more complicated HDR methods, or to those created without the use of HDR at all.

Upon examination of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuation designs, there are many considerations and methodologies that are common to them all. A goal of CASMART’s design working group is to compile the collective experiences of CASMART’s member organizations into a single medium that engineers can then use to make the best decisions regarding SMA system design. In this paper, a review of recent work toward this goal is presented, spanning a wide range of design aspects including evaluation, properties, testing, modeling, alloy selection, fabrication, actuator processing, design optimization, controls, and system integration. We have documented each aspect, based on our collective experiences, so that the design engineer may access the tools and information needed to successfully design and develop SMA systems. Through comparison of several case studies, it is shown that there is not an obvious single, linear route a designer can adopt to navigate the path of concept to product. SMA engineering aspects will have different priorities and emphasis for different applications.

As social and cultural diversity increases in the United States, coaches frequently interact with athletes from a wide range of backgrounds. Therefore, it would be useful if coaches had established guidelines for best practices to support their socially and ethically responsible work with athletes. However, coaching organizations have not published best practice standards specifically for coaches’ work with socially and culturally diverse athletes. This article proposes Sociocultural Competencies for Sport Coaches (SCSC) to support positive coach-athlete relationships. Specifically, the paper (a) reviews standards for social and cultural competencies used in similar professions, (b) introduces SCSC to the field of coaching education, and (c) presents competencies, standards, and benchmarks to guide the implementation of SCSC with diverse athletes.

Couple distress is not only highly prevalent but also detrimental to individual emotional, behavioral, and physical well-being. Moreover, relationship problems can impede treatment response for a wide range of psychological disorders. Understanding couple distress requires that assessment extend beyond individual factors to include the broader relational and socioecological context. This chapter describes the multifaceted etiological considerations in couple assessment and provides brief screening measures and methods for the diagnosis of couple distress. Assessment techniques capable of evaluating behavioral, cognitive, and affective components of couple distress are highlighted. The chapter emphasizes the best practices in conceptualizing and assessing couple distress for the purpose of treatment planning and evaluation. Best practice recommendations and potential areas for future research are explicated.

This review explores the use of computation fluid dynamics (CFD) tools embedded in its computer-aided design (CAD) software to create a right mix of gas and air for a wide range of applications. The new tools provide the ability to evaluate the performance of many potential alternatives in the initial stages of the design process. Early stage analysis makes it possible to improve the performance of the product and resolve design problems quickly and before large sums have been spent on a design that must be changed. The review also discusses that several best practices can help ensure the accuracy of CFD gas and air mixing simulation. The utilization of native 3D data places a premium on the quality of the solid model. The newest generation of CFD software contains sophisticated automatic control functions that make it possible to converge to a solution in almost every application without the need for manual tuning. CFD simulation in the preliminary stages in the design of products involving gas mixing can save time and money. Best practices tuned for the requirements of a particular industry can help design engineers avoid analysis mistakes.
