This is the second of two articles about a study of the implementation of a media literacy curriculum project in three inner city schools Grade 5's in Montreal. The authors describe the development of technological literacy among the teachers and students as they learned about two Media Literacy concepts. The teaching featured the use of a SMARTboard interface, a list-serv and Web resources. The findings affirm the positive contribution of the devices to the development of technological literacy among teachers and pupils. But they also raise other issues: technological determinism and the role of interpretive teaching in educational technology.

This is the first of two articles about a study of the implementation of a media literacy curriculum project in three inner city school Grade 5's in Montreal. The authors describe what the teachers and students learned about two key Media Literacy concepts: the media construct reality and audiences negotiate the meanings of media texts. The teaching featured the use of Internet and computer technology. Their findings suggest that it is possible to teach elementary students to read media critically and raises some issues that merit further investigation: the ideology of positivism that permeates the use of technology in education; the training of media education teachers; and the factors that characterize effective media education pedagogy.

Abstract: The formal school system has been deemed to be essential in helping build the necessary knowledge and attitudes needed to promote environmental literacy. However, in a reality regulated by inexact educational policies and strong socioeconomical inequalities, any attempt to empower those living in marginalized conditions to care for their environment-on both its natural and social dimensions-can be seriously compromised. The present ethnographic case study in a science classroom in a Brazilian public school describes and articulates how the use of media literacy-based instructional strategies can inform teachers and students' critical classroom practices towards ecologizing the performance of curricula.

Keywords: popular media literacy; ecoliteracy; environmental; and science education; ethnographic case study; discourse analysis; global emancipating citizenship.

Resumo: O sistema de educação formal é considerado essencial para o desenvolvimento de uma alfabetização ecológica. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused many new challenges for educational institutions. Most schools and universities have been transforming the learning mode into an online platform and it leaves teachers and students in a challenging situation. The existence of English community which helped to provide exposure and practice toward English learning is postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. Online English community as an alternative to replace English community has not been observed well before. Its flexibility in learning is assumed that it can enhance a better engagement in the English learning activity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of the online English community during COVID-19 pandemic. Fifteen university students that are involved in one online English community participated in the research. The researchers chose the sample by using purposive sampling. The data was collected through questionnaire and interview and the method that is used is qualitative research with a case study design. This study examined the role of Islamic education in building students’ character within Indonesia public schools. In conducting the study, we used a qualitative case study method. The case of this study was a state senior high school in Palu city. Data were gathered through direct field observation, in-depth interviews which involve teachers and students. We also analyzed written material, such as the school curriculum, to understand how the character building strategies were integrated in the curriculum. Iur study found that teachers implement character building strategies through several stages, namely the stages of planning, the stages of learning implementation, and the stages of evaluating Islamic religious education learning. The characters values were embedded in the learning of Islamic religious education. This included the integration of character values in the school curriculum and they were taught in every day classroom leanings and in extracurricular activities.

Reciprocity between teachers and students has been central to transformative pedagogies since the early work of Paulo Freire. However, realizing students as knowledge-producers is much more difficult. This article argues that typically it is the critical educator who “troubles” students’ ideological assumptions, often with the aim of culturally reproducing ourselves through what Michael Warner describes as reprosexuality. This places teachers at the center of the power/knowledge nexus and can foreclose the possibility of a dialogic relation with students in which the power of knowledge-making is a shared endeavor. Using a case study of a graduate course focused on feminist rhetorics and pedagogies in which maternal nurturance and safety in the classroom were central issues, this article explores how Judith Butler’s politics of recognition and vulnerability can serve to build truly reciprocal student-teacher relations and a renewed vision of the role of safety in the classroom.

This study aimed to analyze the newly developed math curriculum taking into account the views of teachers and students. Curriculum analysis is realized in three dimensions; (1) Classroom management – the physical and emotional environment of the classroom, the role of teachers and students, and interactions, (2) Instructions – objectives, planning, implementation, methods and techniques, instructional media, and measurement and evaluation, and (3) Strengths (and benefits) and weaknesses (and limitations). Qualitative case study methods are utilized with literature reviews. The responses collected from the sources are the content that is analyzed, and then the code is categorized. These findings suggest that some changes have been made and reflected in the implementation of the classroom, and the student-centered approach has been incorporated into the instruction. On the other hand, some difficulties arise during implementation due to a lack of infrastructure

Palavras-chave: fórum on-line; interação; educação a distância. Abstract This article reports a case study, which focused the role of the on-line forum in the conception of the teachers who worked in a post-graduation lato sensu distance course held by a public university. The on-line forums associated with courses are means of asynchronous interactions between teachers and students. The forums of the subjects of the course at issue were observed and the subjects (teachers and students) were interviewed in the period between August 2004 and July 2005. The analyses of these data were based on Brousseau´s notion of didactical situation and didactical contract (1996), on Vigotsky’s concepts of social interaction and learning (2000), and on the ideas about the formation of distance education teachers (EaD), discussed by Belloni (2001). These analyses were complemented with discussions about the formation of on-line learning communities and the roles of virtual teacher and students according to Palloff and Pratt (2004), and about Almeida’s concepts of digital learning environment (2003). It may be concluded that the conceptions of forum that the teachers of the aforementioned course have are originated from presence formation and practice and that there is little incentive for bringing these professionals up to date. It was concluded that there is a need for State investments in the continuous formation of EaD teachers, so as to contribute to changes in their conceptions and to bring about transformations of their actions in the virtual environment, aspects necessary for the information society. Keywords: on-line forum; interaction; distance education.
