This is the first of two articles about a study of the implementation of a media literacy curriculum project in three inner city school Grade 5's in Montreal. The authors describe what the teachers and students learned about two key Media Literacy concepts: the media construct reality and audiences negotiate the meanings of media texts. The teaching featured the use of Internet and computer technology. Their findings suggest that it is possible to teach elementary students to read media critically and raises some issues that merit further investigation: the ideology of positivism that permeates the use of technology in education; the training of media education teachers; and the factors that characterize effective media education pedagogy.

The theoretical research focuses on the educational experience for the formation of media literacy among school-age children in different countries around the world. The article presents various options for the formation of media literacy, based on three educational models. According to the first model, media education is represented in the form of a compulsory subject in schools, which is studied by students in different grades. According to the second educational model, media habits are acquired within the interdisciplinary (integrated) approach – the use of the media in traditional school subjects, including native and foreign languages, literature, social sciences. The third model offers practical and informal integration of media education as a supplement and replacement of specific subjects or the intersection between them. The article examines in detail the media training opportunities offered in Canada, the United Kingdom, Finland and Spain, as their experience in media education is applied in a number of other countries around the world. Special attention is paid to the first steps in the introduction of media literacy training among students in Bulgaria, which is carried out only in the last 5-6 years.

A case study of Sweden and Lithuania aims at analysing the important question of inclusion and exclusion when it comes to the media literacy and the digital divide. Analysis of country-level factors, such as social-stratification, technological infrastructure, educational system, cultural values is provided with the goal to identify the keen factors widening the digital divide of certain population groups in both countries. The study has revealed that in regard to media literacy, age matters the most in case of Lithuania. On the contrary, in Sweden the digital divide between different age groups is diminishing but the media literacy of socio-economically marginalized groups (immigrants in particular) is much lower as compared to the general trends in population. The digital generation – children and teenagers – have got much more in common in both countries as opposed to the senior adult populations. Santrauka Švedijos ir Lietuvos tarpkultūrinio atvejo tyrimo tikslas – išanalizuoti visuo- menės medijų raštingumo lygmenį atskirose socialinėse grupėse. Siekdami atskleisti pagrindinius veiksnius, lemiančius gyventojų grupių skaitmeninę at- skirtį, atsižvelgėme į socialinės stratifikacijos ypatumus, technologijų infras- truktūros, švietimo sistemos ir kultūrinių vertybių prioritetų skirtumus abiejose šalyse. Atliktas tyrimas atskleidė, kad Lietuvoje amžius yra pagrindinis veiks- nys, lemiantis medijų raštingumo lygmenį. Tačiau Švedijoje medijų raštingu- mo gebėjimai įvairiose amžiaus grupėse vienodėja, nors į skaitmeninę atskirtį patenka imigrantų grupės, daugiausia dėl socialinių ir ekonominių priežasčių. Skaitmeninė karta – vaikai ir paaugliai – abiejose šalyse turi panašius skaitme- ninius gebėjimus, todėl skaitmeninė atskirtis aktualesnė vyresniojo amžiaus gyventojų grupėse. Reikšminiai žodžiai: skaitmeninė kultūra, skaitmeninė atskirtis, skaitmeninė karta, medijų raštingumas, tinklaveikos visuomenė, socialinė stratifikacija.

This article seeks to question the emphasis on critical reading in media education curricula, both in terms of the assumptions about children's existing knowledge which it entails and in terms of its implications for classroom practice. The first part of the article draws on recent research on children's understanding of television, and considers the social functions of critical discourses about the medium. Summarising findings from the author's research, it points to the inter-relationships between cognitive, affective and social factors in children's talk. The second part of the article draws on recent classroom research in the field to consider the processes by which children acquire critical discourses about the media, and the limitations of a purely analytical approach. The article concludes by arguing for the need to develop a more complex theoretical basis for media education pedagogy, based on the interaction between critical analysis and other teaching strategies.
