Use of Self-Assessment of Video Recording to Raise Students' Awareness of Development of Their Oral Presentation Skills

This paper aims to examine if using video recordings help students raise their awareness of the development of their oral presentation skills by reviewing video recordings of their presentations. For this study, all students who took a Financial Accounting class in the academic year 2018–2019 at Lincoln University (LU) were video-recorded when presenting. Participants were asked to review their video recordings, assess their performance, and record their reflections by using a Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). The results indicated that the students’ attitude toward recording the presentations was highly positive. The predominant response was that this new learning activity increased students’ awareness of the importance of presentation skills without provoking their anxiety. Participants were able to observe that certain delivery skills such as good preparation, self-confidence, eye contact, and voice quality needed improvement. For managerial implications, LU, through its Writing and Speaking Center (WSC), offered thirty-minute sessions with a presentation coach to improve students’ communication skills and prepare them to give a more polished presentation in class. In comparing the practice presentation at the WSC with the final in-class presentation, students were observed to be more confident, better prepared, and less nervous during the final presentation. However, we observed that the practice presentation did not carry the same weight as the final presentation as the practice presentation was neither graded nor delivered in front of an instructor or a wider audience.

Self-assessment is one of alternative ways to evaluate students’ speaking talent in English. Through this evaluation, students are allowed to discover, know, and develop their speaking skill. Nonetheless, this sort of project was probably not common in Indonesia. Thus, this study was aimed to know students’ perception of using self-assessment for assessing their oral performance at Link and Match vocational high school. The information of this study was gathered by means of questionnaire which consists of 5 questions about the use of self-assessment. In this qualitative study, the data had been analyzed descriptively. There have been 30 vocational high school students who stand in Multimedia Major as the participant of this study. The results of this study indicated that most of the students thought that self-assessment very helpful for them because it allowed them to know their functionality and develop it to achieve the course goal specifically the speaking course objective. However, some students though that self-assessment was considerably useful since the teacher not often use this assignment and the students not take pleasure in whereas attempting to assess themselves. Self-assessment is very useful in exploring and assessing students speaking skill.

The research analyses the contribution of personality to the exercise of the management function within the hospitality industry, and demonstrates that the profiles of incumbents can be measured more objectively by the use of self-assessment instruments. On the basis of pilot studies in Hungary and the Czech Republic a the profiles of final year hospitality students were identified and were compared with current job incumbents. Analysis of the findings indicate a mis-match between student and management traits. The conclusions suggest that educational programmes should be modified if the student experience is to be made more realistic and relevant to the needs o f industry. Implementation of the research should result in improved satisfaction of students' career aspirations and on a wider level, it could contribute significantly to management performance across the industry.

AbstractThis paper examines the use of self-control techniques as a teaching tool to change children’s behaviour, and to generalize that behaviour change to other settings. Four case studies are presented to illustrate the use of self-assessment, using the child’s own criteria for rating behaviour, self-modelling with videotapes of the child in the classroom, and self-monitoring using a wrist counter. It is concluded that self-control techniques can be a valuable way of teaching special children to discriminate and evaluate how they are behaving.

The Problem-Based Learning (ABP) methodology requires an evaluation approach in which a series of specific and transversal competencies are evaluated. This evaluation must be formative allowing students to identify and correct mistakes in time. Therefore, it is necessary to have tools in order to evaluate suitably the learning outcomes and established competencies. In the subject of Corrosion which belongs to the second course of the Master of Chemical Engineering, the ABP has been evaluated through a report to be handed after each ABP session, where the main conclusions are collected after the cooperative resolution of the proposed problem and, on the other hand, by means of the notes taken by the teachers and students (co-assessment and self-assessment), after the oral presentation of the results and conclusions of the practice. In this work, for each of these evaluation activities, specific rubrics have been developed. From the different evaluation activities, it can be affirmed that the rubrics used are effective for the evaluation of the ABP methodology activities. In addition, it was possible to verify that the students have reached the learning results and it was also possible to detect the corrosion issues that pose the greatest difficulty to the students.
