Abstract We analyse how neighbourhood ethnic diversity and segregation affect adolescents’ social participation in England. We distinguish between participation in ‘purposeful activities’—such as sports and volunteering—and hanging around with friends. We suggest a novel identification strategy to address the problem of endogeneity of ethnic diversity and segregation. We find that ethnic diversity decreases hanging around, while ethnic segregation increases it. No effects on participation in purposeful activities are found.

 Resumo: Nos dias atuais, percebemos que muitas são as dificuldades para a organização da juventude e a participação política nos espaços de poder e decisão existentes na sociedade. Em muitos dos espaços políticos os jovens não se sentem representados, nem tem oportunidades de defender seus interesses. Nesse contexto, percebe-se a ausência de formação política e oportunidades de participação do jovem na sociedade. Nessa perspectiva, esta pesquisa está pautada no levantamento de elementos da participação social, cultura política dos jovens e da trajetória de organização da Rede de Juventudes do Seridó que contribuem para a formação da consciência crítica dos jovens e favorecem o exercício do controle social e da promoção de políticas públicas voltadas para a juventude.  Palavras-chave: Juventude; Participação Social; Rede de Juventudes.  Abstract: Nowadays, we realize that there are many difficulties for the organization of youth and political participation in the spaces of power and decision in society. In many political spaces young people do not feel represented, nor do they have opportunities to defend their interests. In this context, one can perceive the lack of political formation and opportunities for youth participation in society. This article explores migrant young people’s engagement, participation and involvement in socially meaningful activities, events and experiences. This type of social participation is approached in the social inclusion literature using the notions of social capital and active citizenship (Bourdieu, 1986; Coleman, 1988; Putnam, 1993; Putnam, 2000). A key objective, therefore, is to explore the attitudes, values and perceptions associated with social participation for young people. They include the meanings that social engagement has for migrant young people, along with drivers and inhibitions to active participation. The article focuses on both the motives for being actively engaged as well as perceived barriers to social engagement. It is based on a large study conducted among migrant young people of African, Arabic-speaking and Pacific Islander backgrounds in Melbourne and Brisbane, and presents both quantitative and qualitative (discursive) snapshots from the overall findings, based on interviews and focus groups. While many studies have centred on the management of migration and migrants, this article draws attention to the individuals’ active position in negotiating, interpreting and appropriating the conditions of social inclusion. Accounting for the multidimensional and multilayered nature of social inclusion, the paper highlights the heuristic role of social engagement in fostering the feelings of belonging and personal growth for migrant youth.

More social participation is regarded as one of the potential benefits of digitalisation. What are the opportunities offered by digitalisation and what are the risks of social groups being marginalised? What responsibilities do welfare organisations, social services, politics and administrative bodies have in this respect? In this book, the authors address political, technical and ethical questions. O cotidiano compreende as atividades laborais, de lazer, de estudo, de autocuidado, de convívio social, entre outras, sendo também considerado como uma perspectiva de análise e intervenção orientadora da prática do terapeuta ocupacional. A condição de deficiência pode, muitas vezes, afetar a realização dessas atividades. O artigo tem como objetivo apresentar as dificuldades e possibilidades de realização de atividades cotidianas de jovens com deficiência. Com base no método Photovoice, que prioriza o ponto de vista do pesquisado, quatro jovens realizaram fotografias de atividades, locais, ou objetos relevantes em seu dia-a-dia, em uma semana típica de suas rotinas. Uma segunda rodada de fotografias referentes aos obstáculos enfrentados cotidianamente foi realizada, e apenas dois jovens participaram. A análise das fotografias ocorreu em conjunto com os participantes, quando relataram individualmente para a pesquisadora o contexto e motivos de realização das fotos. No texto comparou-se os registros de dois jovens, identificando diferenças extremas em seus cotidianos. O relato e reflexão sobre as fotos foi considerado significativo para um dos participantes que afirmou ter gostado de realizar os registros fotográficos. Pelas imagens, registradas pode-se observar que um dos participantes tem menos oportunidades de participação social, uma vez que seus registros foram todos realizados dentro de sua casa. Ambos participantes registraram limitações voltadas sobretudo às condições de acessibilidade arquitetônica e geográfica, seja dentro de casa ou em espaços de uso coletivo, revelando a grande interferência desses impedimentos para sua vida cotidiana. Abstract The daily life is marked by work, leisure, study, self-care, social interation, also considered as a perspective and analysis of the occupational therapist's practice. The disability condition can often affect the performance of these activities. The article aims to present the difficulties and possibilities of carrying out daily activities of young people with disabilities. Based on the Photovoice method, which prioritizes from the subject's point of view, the youngsters took photographs of relevant activities, places, or objects in their daily life in a typical week of their routines. A second round of photographs regarding the obstacles faced daily was held, and only two young people participated.. The analysis of the photographs occurred together with the participants, when they individually reported to the researcher the context and reasons for the photos. In the text, the records of the two young people were compared, identifying extreme differences in their daily lives. The report and reflection on the photos was considered significant for one of the participants, who liked to carry out the photographic records. From the recorded images, it can be observed that one of the participants has fewer opportunities for social participation, since their records were all carried out inside their house. Both participants registered limitations mainly on the architectural and geographical accessibility conditions, either indoors or in spaces of collective use, revealing the great interference of these impediments to their daily life.Keywords: Daily life; Photography; Young with disabilities; Occupational therapy.

Has increasing inequality and ethnic diversity served to corrode social cohesion in Britain? The evidence discussed in this chapter suggests that in many respects, such as levels of national pride, social trust, and civic engagement, Britain has not in fact changed all that much since the 1950s and 1960s. Nor is Britain all that out of line with peer countries. However, there are long-standing problems of social division, low trust, and disconnection from politics, albeit sometimes taking new forms. In some respects, then, Britain is not all that cohesive. Moreover, there are some new emerging challenges such as declining election turnout, especially among young people, and declining sense of British identity in Ireland and Scotland. However, these emerging challenges cannot be blamed on inequality and diversity. Instead, the explanations, and the solutions, are more likely to be specific and political.

This chapter discusses the lack of ethnic diversity in the creative sector, which remains a significant problem throughout the media and creative industries. There is a significant under-representation of people from black, Asian and other minority ethnic backgrounds (BAME) working in the media and creative industries. Despite many years of efforts by individuals and organisations designed to improve ethnic diversity in the industry, UK media is missing out on an enormous pool of talent. Some of the reasons why access to the creative industries for young people from ethnic minority backgrounds is poor include lack of awareness among BAME young of the opportunities available; closed recruitment networks within the media; and limited knowledge on the part of school and college career services of the opportunities available in the creative sector.
