Grading criteria are proposed for judging potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) for chip quality and yield. The criteria were derived from a decision-making scheme developed from expert opinions, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture grades, and a statistical evaluation of stored potatoes. The criteria are presented as ranges of acceptable values for a limited set of variables found to be important for chip quality and yield. These variables include bruising, cracks, cuts, fusarium dry rot, lesions, and scab. The proposed criteria, besides being a practical decision-making tool for processors, could serve as a knowledge base for potato expert systems and the development of mechanized sorting equipment.

The effect of endophytic Bacillus subtilis (strains 10-4, 26D) and their compositions with salicylic acid (SA) on some resistance and quality traits of stored potatoes infected with Fusarium dry rot were studied. The experiments were carried out on hydroponically grown Solanum tuberosum L. tubers that were infected before storage with Fusarium oxysporum and coated with B. subtilis 10-4, 26D with and without exogenous SA, and then stored for six months. It has been shown that 10-4, 26D, 10-4 + SA, and 26D + SA reduced in different levels (up to 30–50%) the incidence of F. oxysporum-caused dry rot (with the highest effect for 10-4 + SA). SA notably enhanced the positive effect of 10-4, while for 26D, such an effect was not observed. All of the tested treatments increased amylase (AMY) and AMY inhibitors activity in infected tubers, while decreased Fusarium-induced protease activity (except in the case of 10-4 + SA, which promoted a slight increase) was revealed. 10-4, 26D, and their compositions with SA decreased (in different degrees) the pathogen-caused lipid peroxidation, proline, and reducing sugars accumulation in potatoes after long-term storage. It was also discovered 10-4 and 26D, regardless of SA presence, decrease pathogen-induced glycoalkaloids α-Solanine and α-Chaconine accumulation and preserved increased levels of starch and total dry matter in infected stored potatoes. The findings indicate endophytic B. subtilis and its compositions with SA is a promising eco-friendly and bio-safe approach to cope with postharvest decays of potato during long-term storage; however, when developing preparations-compositions it should take into account the strain-dependent manner of B. subtilis action together with SA.

Fusarium dry rot of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a postharvest disease caused by several Fusarium spp. Thirteen Fusarium spp. have been implicated in dry rot of potatoes worldwide. Among them, 11 species have been reported causing potato dry rot of seed tubers in the northern United States (1). Historically, Fusarium sambucinum was the predominant species in Michigan potato production (3). Dry rot symptomatic tubers (n = 972) were collected from Michigan commercial potato storage facilities in 2011 and 2012 to determine the composition of Fusarium spp. Sections were cut from the margins of necrotic tissue with a sterile scalpel and surface disinfested in 0.6% sodium hypochlorite for 10 s, rinsed twice in sterile distilled water, and dried on sterile filter paper. The tissue sections were plated on half-strength potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with 0.5 g/liter of streptomycin sulfate. Dishes were incubated at 23°C in the dark for 7 days. Putative Fusarium isolates were transferred onto water agar and hyphal tips from the margin of actively growing cultures were removed with a sterile scalpel and plated to carnation leaf agar (CLA) and half-strength PDA to generate pure cultures. Seven hundred and thirty Fusarium isolates were collected using these techniques. Preliminary identification of the 730 isolates was based on colony and conidial morphology on PDA and CLA, respectively. While F. oxysporum and F. sambucinum were isolated as expected from prior reports (3), three isolates of F. proliferatum were also identified. On CLA, macroconidia of F. proliferatum were sparse, slender, and mostly straight, with three to five septae (4). Microconidia were abundant, usually single celled, oval or club-shaped in short chains or false heads on monophialides and polyphialides (4), and chlamydospores were absent. On PDA, abundant white mycelium was produced and turned violet with age. Koch's postulates were confirmed through pathogenicity testing on disease-free potato tubers cvs. Atlantic and Russet Norkotah. Tubers were surface disinfested for 10 min in 0.6% sodium hypochlorite and rinsed twice in distilled water. Three tubers of each cultivar per isolate were wounded at the apical end of the tuber to a depth of 4 to 10 mm with a 4 mm diameter cork-borer. Tubers were inoculated by inserting a mycelial plug from a 7-day-old culture grown on PDA into the wound and incubating the tubers at 20°C for 21 days. All Fusarium isolates were tested. Control tubers were inoculated by inserting a water agar plug. Pathogenicity and virulence testing were replicated three times and repeated. Tubers inoculated with F. proliferatum developed typical potato dry rot symptoms but no dry rot symptoms were observed on control tubers. Fusarium proliferatum was re-isolated from symptomatic tubers, confirming Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of F. proliferatum causing potato dry rot in Michigan. This research is devoted to developing of the expert systems for rapid change in production of clothing. The main objective of the study was achieved through the formation of rules of decision-making that intent to solve subtasks of rapid change in production of women's outerwear, including selection of fashion fabric and parameters of the pattern blocks for the specific garments types, and choosing the models of readymade garments. Multifractal analysis was used to evaluate roughness of fabrics. Knowledge base was developed in the shell “Rapana”.

The advanced GIS are equipped both by a database and a knowledge base. The knowledge base contains a system of rules for the purpose oriented data management and processing, which simulate the process of decision-making carried out by an expert. The principles of and experience with expert system creation are described. The expert system applications were tested in the territorial data analysis, the natural phenomena modelling, the remotely sensed data interpretation, the cartographic processes, the artifical intelligence experiments, etc.

The article examines the behavior of the human decision-maker. It surveys research in which about 90 physicians specializing in various fields and with different degrees of seniority participated. It tackles the question of whether it is possible to found the majority of the knowledge bases of the expert systems on the Bayesian theory. We will discuss the way of decision making conforming to the probabilities evaluated according to the Bayesian theory. The logical conclusion, therefore, is that the development of a knowledge base for an expert system founded on probabilities calculated in accordance with the Bayesian theory must be carried out in a controlled manner and depend on the parameters mentioned above.

The selection of a third-party logistics (3PL) provider is an important and demanding task for many companies and organizations dealing with distribution activities. To assist in decision making, this paper proposes the implementation of fuzzy logic. To design a fuzzy inference system (FIS), the first prerequisite is to determine a set of evaluation criteria and sub-criteria and to find the relationship between them. This task was solved by an extensive review of the literature and expert opinions on implementing the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach. The results obtained in the first part of the research, together with data collected from 20 3PL providers, were further used in the second part, which was related to the implementation of the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. Finally, a decision-making tool for 3PL provider selection was designed as an FIS structure, where the inputs were the previously defined criteria and the output was a preference for 3PL selection. The fuzzy rules were generated on the basis of the collected empirical data, the preferences obtained by the TOPSIS method, and expert opinion using the Wang–Mendel method. The proposed fuzzy model is particularly suitable when input data are not crisp values but are provided descriptively through linguistic statements.
